THE WIZARDRY OF OS
By Scott Osborne
Wrong again! I predicted 9 wins for LSU and the Saints. I still could be right about LSU, but there is no chance the Saints get to 9 wins.
In my defense, my football predictions are always contingent on injuries. The injuries so far this year are a reason LSU likely will not get to 9 wins, but they are no excuse for the Black and Gold.
I really thought the Saints offensive line would be ready to go and lead to an effective running game. The running back that I thought would make that happen is injured, Etienne, but the running game wasn't that great when he was playing. Count me in the flabbergasted category when Kamara got half the playing time in the opener at Detroit.
I thought the run game would have been more difficult to defend because the quarterback is mobile and you have to at least honor his ability to move. Instead, Shough has been a sitting duck and gets hit more than any other quarterback in the league.
The media spent much of the preseason telling us the Saints, like everyone else, were in love with tight ends (following the Rams approach). That's why the Saints drafted Delp even though they already had Fant and Johnson. The three tight end sets with a physical run game and all the play action that comes off of it has not existed.
I thought Jordan Tyson was going to help make the passing game explosive, and we have yet to see him. It looks like he has the worst hamstring injury on record, as he is not going to New York, so he is not going to Paris. That means this will be a hamstring injury that will keep him out over 3 months.
I thought Barion Brown would help the Saints steal yards in special teams on kickoff and punt returns. That has not happened either.
I knew the Saints would struggle at corner, but the real issue was going to be at defensive tackle. I didn't think the starters were good, but I was hoping Broughton and Miller could flash and develop as the year went along. So far, the middle of the Saints defensive line gets blown back into the linebackers on almost every middle run. Young and Granderson hold their own on the outside, but that doesn't matter when the middle is like a broken dam.
Further, it is really challenging to win in the NFL when the other team scores points on their first drives and eats up time of possession. Meanwhile, you cannot manufacture a first down. Since the Saints cannot do anything positive to start games with momentum, they don't win at home.
The Saints can't run, stop the run, or win at home. That makes 9 wins impossible and 6 wins unlikely. I think we are now staring a 4-13 season in the face. I do believe teams can improve over the course of a season and the return of Banks, Tyson, Etienne, and Elliss would be significant. But, their returns do not appear to be imminent.
Even though LSU cannot seem to win away from Tiger Stadium, I think the news is a little better there. But not much. The injuries have been costly, but I don't think all the blame can go to the injuries (though #7 is moving in the same direction as the Madden cover).
LSU's defense has been unable to stop Kentucky or Ole Miss at the end of any half. I think the defense is good enough to keep LSU in any game, but a really good defense has to be able to force more turnovers and finish halves.
Offensively, Leavitt's mistakes are too costly. To be clear, he is LSU's best option and there is hope he can improve. But let's also be clear. LSU has two losses and in those two losses, the quarterback for the other team outplayed LSU's quarterback.
So let's look ahead and assume nothing changes. Who does LSU play on the road where the defense can outplay the other teams' quarterback at the end of halves and Leavitt can outplay that quarterback throughout the game? The good news is that Auburn, Tennessee, and Arkansas are bad at quarterback. I would have LSU winning all three, but I also know the Tennessee game comes on the heels of Bama and Texas. Considering Tennessee's defense and LSU's road woes, I can't predict that game as a win. So there is LSU's third loss.
At home, LSU is lucky to face Mississippi State without their quarterback. Mississippi State is lucky to face LSU at 11:00 am. Still, LSU should win.
The other two home games are against top 5 teams. Texas and Bama are better than LSU. I think Bama and LSU are similar on defense and Texas is better. Bama's quarterback and running game will be a problem. Texas should be better on offense than they are and maybe they will figure something out by then. At home, LSU can beat Texas and Bama, but they can also lose both. I would call both games 60/40 in favor of the Tide and Horns. So let's say LSU splits the two games. 8-4 is what I expect at this point.
I wanted to be more hopeful, but the sample size is pretty large at this point. It will take one heck of a coaching job from this staff to get LSU to 9 or 10 wins. Like the Saints, you just have to be better in the middle of the offensive and defensive lines.
