DENHAM SPRINGS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION MEETS TONIGHT 6:30 PM AT BIG MIKE’S SPORTS BAR AND GRILL!!!!
AND THEY WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT… We're back! DSAA is super excited about this upcoming athletic season. We will have our first meeting of the year on Monday August 19 at 6:30 at Big Mike's. This month's sport spotlight will be football and volleyball. We hope you will join us as we kick off the new year and encourage these teams as they start their seasons.
Membership forms and payment are now due for the 2024-25 school year. Dues are still only $25 per family. Please encourage the new parents to DSHS to get involved by sharing this email with them or the membership form. You can also give them my email address if they have any questions. The membership form is attached. You can pay your dues on Venmo @ DSHS –AthleticAssociation. Look for our logo.
We will have FIVE regular season home football tailgates this year and we are anticipating lots of fun for Friday Night Lights. We will have sponsors for our tailgate meals and Ralph Sellers Chevrolet has once again sponsored our water and soft drinks for the tailgates this year.
And one last thing. The DSHS students are offered a student athletic pass for $60. This pass allows students into all home games for volleyball, football, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball and softball. It is a great value for our students. You can purchase the student pass for your student on the school website.

JACKETS FOOTBALL RETURNS TO AIRWAVES!
We started in 1994! Since then, except for 2 years (The Great Flood knocked us out and some Corporate Radio Geniuses preempting us for Comedy Radio one season) Jon Fine Productions has produced Yellow Jackets Football Radio Broadcasts. In 2004, games can be heard on Family Radio, 91.9 FM, Baton Rouge and on the net at JonFineProductions.com, beginning at 6 pm with Sport-N-Center Jackets Warmup. Josh Ward is on play-by-play, with Mitch Covington calling color commentary. The first broadcast will be Friday, August 30, when the Jackets play in the Walker Jamboree

THE WIZARDRY OF OS
Conventional wisdom from The Ponderosa (LSU practice fields) is that Tiger fans should expect a slightly better defense with a small downturn in offensive production. I am going to push back on conventional wisdom.
The fact is there are many ways to skin a cat (not that I know even one way) and there are many ways to be an elite offense. I have watched Alabama in the later Saban years, Florida under Spurrier, and Ohio State under Meyer turn over rosters and have elite offenses year in and year out. LSU lost 3 first round draft picks and I don’t think it is unfair to expect an elite offense in 2024. The Tigers have the components to be elite.
Again, elite offenses can take many forms. Last year, LSU had an explosive offense that had to keep scoring because the defense was not going to stop anyone. The defense was also not going to set the offense up in great field position.
I am going to buy conventional wisdom that the defense will be better. An easy position considering it is almost impossible to be worse. Instead of just taking this position by default, I do have one additional reason to believe the defense will appear better statistically. The offense will not be as explosive.
Even if the offense isn’t as explosive, it can and I believe will be just as effective. An offense that is more consistent running the ball, that gets into second or third and less than 4, and converts third downs benefits the defense. This type of offense wins time of possession, knows how to play with a lead, and gives the opponent fewer plays.
The Tigers have the ingredients on offense. LSU has a veteran and extremely talented offensive line with a true power back in Kaleb Jackson (hopefully a short yardage nightmare for opponents). The TEs could be the best group LSU has had in a while if Pimpton and Green live up to the hype I am sure Mason Taylor is going to fulfill. A deep TE room would allow LSU to run different formations with two tight end sets and use play action effectively.
Don’t get me wrong, this offense will still be explosive. Hilton, Lacy, Daniels, and others will make big plays. Long runs from the running backs, not the quarterback should be a thing.
The final ingredient is a veteran quarterback who has put in the work, the time, and has the talent.
Complementary football is winning football. If LSU is able to play to the strength of the offensive line and takes care of the football, the Tigers will move the ball and put up a boat load of points. The defense will likely be very short of dominating, but as like last year, LSU just needs to stop explosive plays and make a few plays of their own on defense. The defense has enough playmakers, see Harold Perkins.
To clarify, I am not predicting a certain number of wins this year. And after the huge disappointments in opening games the last few years, I am very apprehensive as to the overall record with the increased difficulty of the schedule. All I am saying is that the key ingredients are in place and the expectations should be high for LSU to have a great offense which means it just needs to be average on defense.
