THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

Blockbuster! Dell Demps hates the draft, and with this draft history, so would I. Here are New Oleans’ draft picks since 2006: Hilton Armstrong, Cedric Simmons, Marcus Vinicius, Julian Wright, Adam Haluska, Darren Collison, Anthony Davis, Darius Miller, and Buddy Hield.

Demps has only been the GM since 2010, but my point is that the Pelicans have not accomplished anything through the draft. Especially, since I think you have the throw out drafting Anthony Davis number one overall.

If we are all honest for a second, we should realize that very few NBA teams are built through the draft. The reason is that the top players are too young to make immediate impacts, and by the time they are really ready to be great players, they are free agents.

Also, teams only get 2 picks per year and it is not like the NFL where a lot of players drafted late can contribute to the team. In the NBA, there isn’t an equivalent to being a kick returner or a gunner as a rookie while you learn to play wide receiver. You have to be a complete player to play in a NBA game.

As a result, I understand why Dell Demps puts his stock in trades and NBA free agency. In addition, I understand how rare it is to have a player like DeMarcus Cousins who can score around the goal, protect the rim, and let Anthony Davis fly around on offense and defense.

Nevertheless, this trade is extremely risky and I would not have made the trade for one reason. I don’t think Cousins can be trusted for the amount of money he will be paid. Guys that pout because they don’t get touches, don’t run back on defense because they don’t get a call, question coaches in meetings, and get technical fouls every third game usually tear teams apart.

I hope I am wrong. Obviously, Demps believes I am wrong. All I know is that the Spurs and Warriors would never have a guy like Cousins on their team.

If I am wrong, this trade is amazing and the Pels are in great shape for the future.

With the attention Cousins and Davis will attract, they don’t need guards that can create their own shot. Holiday can provide that aspect of the game. The Pels will need guards to knock down open threes, though. The good news is that for the first time in memory, the Pels should dominate the glass and defend the rim.

The best news is I can finally stop hearing how the Pelicans should tank to get a lottery pick.

HEY REF

I’m intentionally keeping my column very short this time so that I can just get right to the matter that I find deserves our utmost attention. So keeping that in mind let’s get right to it without a bunch of useless garbage. Last week I spoke out about the senseless killings of young black males by other young black males. There isn’t a day that goes by without some sort of violence happening in every city, big and small.

There’s no hiding the fact these murders continue to happen without any real sense they’ll be slowing down anytime soon. So I’ve been waiting to see how the new head man in San Francisco handle their spoiled little quarterback, Colin Kaepernick. You remember him don’t you? Of course you do how foolish of me to think anyone normal sane person could forget this embarrassment to our culture as well as to our society and country.

Yesterday new 49er general manager John Lynch met with the troubled, spoiled little millionaire to as he said “discuss his future with the team”. As far as I’m concerned he shouldn’t have any future with any team in the NFL for his disgraceful actions and sideline hijinks. All true Americans can say without hesitation he’s lower than worm sh*t. This guy has led a life of luxury and has never known being without. He lives in a $4.5 million dollar estate in the WHITE hills of sunny California.

He’s pretended to care about the status of everyday black Americans and wants to do something to supposedly help them gain national respect, etc., etc. With all that he did to gain attention to the plight of many young black Americans he’s done exactly NOTHING in the lines of helping to eradicate racism in America.

If this spoiled little dweeb really was serious then he surely would’ve done something as bold as his sit downs and kneeling during the playing of our national anthem before every one of his games. He did attract much needed attention while the TV cameras were rolling but since the end of his season would somebody please tell me what he’s done.

From all the headlines I’ve read and seen he’s done ZERO to help end racism in America. He hasn’t done a thing to even bring peace to the state where he lives much less the entire 50 states that make up America. But what really burns me is the fact that new head coach Kyle Shanahan and the before mentioned G. M. Lynch have been kissing his butt by not cutting him at the very earliest they could. This would’ve sent the clearest message that the type of behavior exhibited by Kaepernick would not be tolerated and would be grounds for termination.

In just over a week Kaepernick can opt-out of his current contract with the Niners and become a free agent. In a perfect world the Q. B. would do just that and get out onto the open market to see just how much his talents and actions are worth to another team. I won’t be surprised if some of the bottom feeders in the NFL bid for his services. If another team does sign him just remember his baggage because if he does play again that’s all anyone will remember about him and not what he’s done to better the country for black Americans.

Till next week… …
