THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High School

By the time you are reading this article, you will know if Sean Payton is still the head coach of the New Orleans Saints. You will know if LSU basketball was able to start 2-0 in the SEC against the top two teams in the SEC.

As I am sitting in my kitchen trying to write this article, I am really struggling because the two things I am most interested in discussing are going to have happened by the time this article is read.

There will be plenty of time to talk about Dave Aranda. Coach Miles made a tremendous hire. There is no doubt about it. It is great news.

There will be tons of time to talk about personnel decisions the Saints need to make. They are pretty obvious. It all begins and ends at offensive and defensive line (linebacker too). Yet, who wants to talk about free agency and the draft that are months away when the Saints could lose their best coach ever.

For weeks, I have been blowing off the talk of Sean Payton leaving, but I have a bad feeling about the Giants. They have young players on offense that must have Payton drooling when he thinks of the possibilities. The organization is as well respected as there is in the NFL. He has coached in New York before, and they would give him Time Square if he wanted it. Yet again, you already know what happened.

LSU played its best basketball by an ocean when it won at Vanderbilt. There were no quick threes of one pass. LSU outrebounded Vanderbilt by 11. Finally, at times LSU defended using its length and in spurts five guys working together in a way that stymied an excellent offense. Oh, and Ben Simmons played like the best player in college basketball. If LSU does that again at home against Kentucky, the Tigers could definitely pull the upset. Yet once again, you know if that happened.

So what should I write about? Should I go to the mailbag? Nah, I need to save that gag for the summer. I know, I will write about Johnny Manziel. I’ll brag how easy and correct I was after the draft when I said there was no way he had the maturity to make it in the NFL. No, I shouldn’t take credit for something so obvious like bragging that I knew the ship would sink at the end of the movie Titanic. I would advise if anyone knows Manziel, to tell him that the slogan, “Whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” is only a slogan and actually the opposite of the truth.

I guess I’ll just make a prediction on the first two topics, and you can sit back and laugh at my foolishness or read in awe of my intuition. Come to think of it, I don’t want to jinx either one.

HEY REF

So Louisiana and all of its “Who Dat” fans can stop holding their collective breaths as the NFL franchise announced that coach Sean Payton will remain in his capacity as head coach. Seems all the rumors and speculations were for naught as Payton announced “I plan on finishing my career here; I’ll be here as long as they’ll have me”.

I felt as though we were watching an episode of “Twilight Zone” since just a couple weeks back Les Miles looked as though he would lead the way out of the Bayou State before the powers at LSU came to their senses and retained the coach that’s only got the winningest record in Baton Rouge. And top off a reported $15 million buy out to Les’ story and there was no other answer to the puzzle than to keep him.

If you call yourself a Saint’s fan then you’re still holding your breath although I suspect there really is no need to do so. About the only real answer to a huge question is “How deep will Drew Brees’ salary be cut”? The Saints are very top heavy for the 2016 salary cap. Reports from every network and internet site has reported that Brees is due anywhere from $20-$30 million. I’m not about to speculate what he’ll agree to do for the team since I only deal in facts.

But knowing the caliber of the man I feel confident he’ll agree to an extension of his contract rather than a simple salary cut. That extension should be for a couple years and then the club will spread his millions over the life of that new contract even though I don’t believe he’ll be on the roster for the final couple of years. Doing an extension is nothing new and is more the norm since doing it this way an athlete still receives his millions down the road instead of being released from a team while he’s still an NFL caliber player.

Now it’s time to get into the real news coming out of the NFL. As of January 1st there are three contenders for making the move to the Los Angeles. Leading off are the Rams since they were the franchise that left California back in 1995. Rams’ owner Stan Kroenke has dumped on the St. Lois area; the very same place they felt deserved a team while playing when they bailed out of sunny California. His remarks basically label the city and state as an area that “lags economically” that has a stadium proposal “doomed for failure”.

I’ll translate what he’s saying in words we all can understand, I’ve sucked every dollar I can from the St. Lois area. No matter how big and expensive a stadium they build for my team the dollars won’t come close to the dollars that Los Angeles will bless me with if I return to the state I ran away from while hoping to bilk many more dollars from the taxpayers in Missouri. Now this comes from a real estate BILLIONAIRE that’s hoping to get a $1.8 BILLION dollar stadium deal to be built in Inglewood, CA.

Another proposal comes from two established California teams; Oakland and San Diego. Their proposal also calls for a BILLION plus dollar stadium they’ll share which of course will be financed on the backs of those very same California taxpayers. Their stadium will be located in Carson; CA. Last week the teams submitted separate applications to the owners which will be read and discussed during the owner’s meeting in Houston Jan. 12-13.

The Rams hope their 29 page sales pitch will win out since it boasts that the Inglewood site has been approved by the league for the site of an NFL style stadium. It contains more dumping on the St. Lois area which I refuse to repeat simply because this owner is playing the same “hand” all of these new era NFL owners have been playing in their attempts to all have multi-BILLION DOLLAR stadiums financed mainly by taxpayers.

And I again will say that those wanting these stadiums should shoulder the vast majority of the expenses of these endeavors. In a country that can’t feed its people or furnish jobs for the citizens that are expected to pay the taxes needed for these stadiums it just goes against every fiber of my being. Here are the simple numbers that no sane person can afford to debate, every NFL franchise can only guarantee the cities and states where a team calls home that they’ll only play eight games a year in these BILLION DOLLAR stadiums.

I’ll be paying close attention to see how these BILLIONAIRES get a city/state to shell out these massive amounts of money for their PRIMA DONNA football players. Looks like California will be the next state where the NFL will be making yet another BILLION DOLLAR ransom demand of its citizens. And the sad part of all this is that many state legislatures will give these greedy owners a blank check in the hopes of hosting Sunday football.

How can the NFL demand BILLIONS of dollars from a state that can’t even deliver fresh water to its people? Instead of spending billions finding a way to deliver fresh water to the citizens Californians will be asked to forgo a basic need for a team full of drug users, gangsters, tax evaders, felons and women beaters. What’s even sadder, there are hundreds of cities wishing they were in California’s shoes!

Till next week…
