THE WIZARDRY OF OS
Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High
I don’t think LSU fans have enough respect to Dan Mullen. For most of his tenure at MIssissippi State, he had a stigma because he couldn’t beat ranked teams like Alabama or LSU. At the time, LSU and Alabama were like Georgia and Alabama now, elite. His Bulldog teams were close to pulling the upset when hosting in Starkville, but could not get over the hump like most schools in the SEC.
Then Mullen got Dak Prescott (LSU’s coaches can take the blame for that), the quarterback he needed. In 2014, Mississippi State team beat the snot out of LSU in Tiger Stadium (don’t let the score fool you). Since then, Mullen’s teams have been the equal of every other SEC program except for Georgia and Alabama.
Like many other college football fans, I was hopeful that losing at home to Kentucky would be a sign that it would take Mullen some time to get things in the right direction at Florida. Alas, that loss was simply all it took to get his team’s attention.
Many fans may be lost in the fallacy of the sports transitive property. After all, Texas A&M beat Kentucky who beat Florida who beat Mississippi State who beat Auburn who lost to LSU. I will make it easy for everyone. Alabama and Georgia are better than the rest of the SEC because of their ability to control the offensive and defensive lines combined with quality quarterbacks. Both teams have great skill players, but so does everyone else in the SEC.
Auburn is good, but not as not as good as last year. Florida is better as is LSU, Kentucky, and Texas A&M. Mississippi State is not as good as people thought, but still pretty good. Missouri and South Carolina are a step down from those teams. Ole Miss and Vanderbilt have some redeeming qualities, but some major weaknesses as well. And Arkansas is whooo pig slop bad while Tennessee is rocky bottom.
As for LSU, this is three games in a row where the offense had the ball with with momentum, only to turn the ball over because of a lack of pass protection. Then for whatever reason it takes over a quarter to get back to any sort of positive production.
While it appeared the offensive line was going to be in good shape due to players returning from injury, in actuality, there were blown assignments similar to the first two weeks of the year. Magee and Charles had the toughest outings. Magee had not played guard this year and Charles had been out with an injury. Those two did not appear to be in sync at all.
I do take some solace in the fact that this coaching staff has proven to be effective in addressing and improving areas from game to game. I suspect Tell The Truth Monday was pretty harsh for the receivers. Dropped passes and no ability to block in screens are a bad combination.
As for the defensive line and linebackers, it is time to tell the truth about them as well. What was supposed to be the strength of the team is not. Nobody seemed to care when Ole Miss and Louisiana Tech gashed LSU in the middle, but it was painful to watch against Florida and is easily the reason LSU lost the game.
The defense as a whole is nowhere close to what we hoped it would be this year. This was supposed to be a top ten defense in the country. The sample size is big enough and this year’s defense is ranked in the thirties surrendering almost 350 yards a game. Even if you you hold teams out the end zone, those yards mean long fields for the offense. LSU could not put together multiple sustained drives against top defenses like Miami, Auburn, and Florida so there is no reason to think it will start against Georgia.
LSU has to find big plays on offense, defense, and special teams to contend against Georgia. Georgia is very impressive, but in the last two years has played just two ranked teams on the road. The Bulldogs beat Notre Dame, who was good but not great last year, by one. Then they were run out of Jordan Hare last year by Auburn. That is it in two years. Maybe, Tiger Stadium can be the equalizer.
I don’t have much to say about the Saints. I am very relieved that the defense is at least respectful enough for the offense to win game. I am very excited that Tre’Quan Smith and Marcus Davenport are showing signs of being major contributors this year. But I have have to recognize the Saints have played the easiest part of their schedule and should be 5-0 right now.
Finally, I have to admit I am a little put off. It seems like for the past 3 years that every time Drew Brees misses on a deep pass, a group of Saints fans start wondering if Drew is too old. Every off season, a certain chorus of fans starts talking about replacing Brees. Some people have no idea what they have been watching for the past 12 years.
Brees isn’t just a quarterback, he is an artist. Beyond that, he is a great person and tremendous representative of my hometown.
HEY REF
Dennis is a bit under the weather and is taking this week off.
