THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Let me be the first person to talk about the Super Bowl… and actually talk about the game instead of brothers, retiring players, and other "off the field" story lines.

I am very confident that this will be a very competitive, entertaining game. Both teams would prefer to run the ball, yet are capable of making plays in the passing game. The defenses are hard hitting and adept at forcing turnovers, yet not so dominant that they will prevent the other offense from scoring at all.

My best guess is that this will be a typical NFL game that is decided by turnover margin and field position. I expect a game in the twenties with most of the scoring in the second half once the teams gets more desperate and have to take some chances. My prediction is Baltimore 27-24.

For those that follow this column on a regular basis, you knew I couldn't let this week go by without celebrating Sean Payton's return to the Saints. I appreciate Roger Goodell shortening the suspension by 2 weeks (though he easily could have allowed Payton to return at the beginning of January). I think it is important for Payton to attend the Senior Bowl and work on completing his coaching staff.

Without being in the facility, I can only imagine the organization is going to feel a tidal wave of energy heading into the off season by just having Payton in the building. When he left, he told everyone to do their job, but I am sure that everyone felt like they had to do more to cover for his loss. Only know can everyone get back to normal and, “Do their job.”

HEY REF

It may not be the biggest story coming from NFL Headquarters since we are less than two weeks away from the kickoff for this year’s Super Bowl. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell reinstated New Orleans Saint’s head coach Sean Payton Monday after a meeting in New York City. The lifting of the one year suspension actually came two weeks early since Payton was to meet with Goodell after the Super Bowl which of course just so happens to be in the “Big Easy” this year.

For once I can agree with the Commissioner in the way he handled this very unpleasant issue. Taking any attention away from the big game would’ve been a huge disservice to the league, its players and fans. So, comish you get a big “atta-boy” for finally showing you do know how to handle things in a professional manner. I’m hoping he continues to handle those more severe issues in this same manner.

With Payton back in control it instantly makes the Saints a playoff contender. Whether you believe he did or didn’t know about the bounty payouts one thing can’t be ignored. And that is his complete and absolute silence during his time away from the team. There was no need to hash things out in the press on a daily basis denying knowledge of this or that. The fact that he was in control of the organization or at least the part that got down and dirty on Sunday afternoons left him very few avenues of escape. In a very classy way he “manned-up” and took full responsibility.

In this day and time when it seems just about everyone that’s gotten caught with their hands in the cookie jar, looking for excuses, scapegoats, laying blame on any and every one possible, Payton did the complete opposite and took it directly on the chin. That in my book speaks volumes of the man. Even former President Ronald Reagan when brought in front of Congress to explain what he did or did not know about missiles the U. S. Government was sending to Iran kept answering “I don’t remember”. Over seventy five (75) times Reagan answered “I don’t recall, I don’t remember” and at that very same time he’s in the middle of a $2.5 million book deal concerning his Presidency!!

So, New Orleans, you need look no further than the man occupying the position of Head Coach to find a man of true integrity no matter what went down on the field and in meetings from 2009 till 2012. But at the end of the day you don’t get any points for being a “stand up, classy man of integrity” but it’s something that’ll bring respect from players and fans alike. Getting respect from your team is one thing not many coaches try to achieve in their pursuit of wins. Sean Payton seems to have this ability without looking like a guy being burdened by it.

And that brings me to say something about a true, class-less, phony individual that goes by the name of Bill Belichick, Head Coach of the second place New England Patriots. Here’s a guy that’s very familiar with winning and wining big games year in and year out. His after game response to the football world was totally inexcusable. A true champion knows how to win with dignity. When you lose; it brings out the real individual time after time.

How can this man defend his baby like manner in a display that was, is and will always be that of a true hypocrite? You lost the game; you were out coached, out hustled, completely out of sync. So, Bill, you owe the nation an apology but considering your behavior after last Sunday’s loss I don’t think anyone would or should consider it because it’ll be as phony as you are. We teach our kids how to win with grace and to win while respecting your opponent. I’d like to see a hefty fine meted out by the Commissioner and the sooner the better.

In my opinion the biggest issue facing this year’s LHSAA convention, going on right now, is how to come up with a playoff system that’s fair to everyone. There’s going to be a lot of giving/taking and so on just to agree where to begin the new set of rules. On one side you’ve got the “haves” while on the other side of course are the “have not’s”. Simply put private schools have a definite advantage over the public schools.

This is no great secret, but I feel the private institutions need to be placed together and allow them to compete against each other. Because no matter how much we’d like to think things were equal, they never will be. Its basic math, they have a much bigger checkbook. They can do the one thing public schools can’t do and that is recruit. It goes on (recruiting) at some of the bigger schools (north of Alexandria) I’ve seen it for myself, but then we must ask ourselves “is it worth the extra dollars”?

How can we expect to level the playing field when there are separate rules for some schools and then some have none at all? If a private school wants an athlete that’s enrolled at a local public school there’s nothing keeping the private school from getting that player. An easier term would be “stacking the deck”. Then you have to wonder where to draw the line in keeping one or two schools from fielding a team that’ll give LSU a run for their money.

There’ll be no simple solution and I wish the principals all the luck they can get so that an agreement can be hammered out to make it where the kids are the ONLY reason for whatever system comes out of all the debates and/or arguments that are surely to follow. But a basic solution must go along the lines where private schools face off against private systems; it’s the only fair solution.

Till next week… …
