“Don’t bet against consistent behavior.” I am not sure if Will Wade is quoting anyone when he says that, so I will give Will Wade credit for the statement.
I think logic implies that the converse of the statement should also be true. Bet against inconsistent behavior. This statement is the one that describes the LSU baseball team this year.
Please don’t misunderstand how I feel about this year’s team. I am the one that thinks LSU would be a national seed this year if Josh Smith, AJ Labas, and Nick Storz had been healthy all year. I also think Paul Mainieri has done a brilliant job of managing the team, and their run through the SEC Tournament was amazing.
Still, my brain won’t allow me to fall into the line of thinking that this team has turned some corner and is going to repeat their high quality of play this weekend at Oregon State. Just look at the season, the only consistency in LSU’s season has been inconsistency.
LSU opened the year with the worst opening weekend performance in modern LSU baseball history. Then the Tigers beat Texas the following weekend. The next two weeks LSU played a bunch of teams that were nowhere near the NCAA Tournament.
The Tigers opened SEC play with a series win over Missouri, followed by a series loss at Vandy. Then another home series win against Mississippi State, followed by a road series loss at A&M.
LSU fans, me included, thought the rally bees that helped LSU sweep Tennessee would lead to a streak. It did, but the wrong kind of streak as LSU lost their next four including a sweep at South Carolina.
The Tigers lost the series at Ole Miss, and the season was on the brink until LSU beat Arkansas in two of three. Of course, LSU won their series against Bama and then lost the last series of the year at Auburn.
Considering the ebb and flow of the season, playing well in the SEC Tournament should not have been much of a surprise. LSU hit a high note last week, so we should expect a low note this week. Right?
I don’t know. I do know Zack Hess is going to have to pitch like a first round pick again this weekend for LSU to have a chance. I am pretty sure LSU is going to have to stay in the winners bracket to pull off the improbable. I am positive that Sanders, Beck, Bush, and Peterson are going to have to match their SEC Tournament performances. I know they have the “stuff” to do it, but they have rarely been able to repeat these performances.
That is why LSU had the second to worst ERA in the SEC this year. It wasn’t because their pitchers were consistently bad, they were on or off and rarely in between.
The one bit of good news is that LSU is not playing a road series in the SEC. Oregon State is a tough place to win because their team is really good, but not because of the environment. Maybe that will be enough for LSU to match their SEC tournament magic and Tiger fans will feel better about LSU being sent so far from home.
