THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

These are the times where it stinks to be a fan. Believe it or not, I would much rather be a player or coach for the Saints or LSU.

That might sound odd considering the last week. But, that is really how I feel. The benefit of being a fan is that I can turn away from the game. I can stop watching early, I can concentrate on something else. The coaches and players have to endure the entirety of the game. Trust me, the sideline in Minnesota, Starkville, and the Dome recently have been places where time stood still for everyone involved when all you want is for the game to end as the opponent controls the game.

After the game is where it is harder to handle reality more as a fan (if you are like me). No other games are fun to watch. The opportunity for football to be entertaining the rest of the weekend is lost. Sports news which is usually a nice diversion from real life is like salt on a wound, so I turn it off.

On the other hand, players and coaches are used to ignoring that stuff or at least they should. The players and coaches have the opportunity to go back to work and improve. They have the chance to turn things around. Fans can just hope.

Maybe this week, Coach Canada will realize what LSU fans have known for awhile. Just having Derrius Guice isn’t enough when there is no threat of an efficient passing game. He will need to get Guice the ball in space. Canada will also need to find ways to find easy passes for Etling on first down because third down and long has no hope.

Maybe Coach Aranda looks at the tape and realizes LSU is in trouble without Rashard Lawrence. So instead of playing a third team down lineman, LSU should have the option of playing with two down lineman and roll the dice with their best players who are dynamic defensive ends.

Or maybe I don’t know what I am talking about and they do something completely different, but hopefully effective.

What I know is that I have watched the Saints and Tigers get completely dominated on the line of scrimmage against quality competition thus far. That fact can make anything you try as a football coach look pointless.

I feel like it is my job to sprinkle some sunshine, though and come up with reasons to think this season has hope. Regarding LSU, there is a chance that Mississippi State is better than everyone in the country thought. Of course, that would just mean that they are the second best team in the SEC West and LSU is light years behind second place.

Nevertheless, if Lawrence gets healthy, LSU stops the ridiculous slew of undisciplined penalties, and Canada is an absolute genius the rest of the year, LSU could win 9-10 games. Why? Because the SEC is as bad as it has been this century.

As for the Saints, I don’t have a clue. They tried to play zone against Minnesota and had no idea what they were doing. So they played man against Brady and showed why Dennis Allen was having them play zone against Minnesota. Without Strief and Armstead, it doesn’t look like the offense can carry the Saints like years past.

The only thing I can think to say is that I was completely fooled. I am sure you know what they say about being fooled the second time. Well this is four years in a row, so what does that make me. A die hard.

HEY REF

Just so nobody says I’m getting on the Little Nicky train I’d like to offer the words I printed for the faithful just a few seasons ago. I’m not calling this a “Best Of” simply because it involves Nicky and his tide. Most of what I wrote back then has nothing to do with his 2017 team and their run for another title. But I do think if he pulls off another title for Bama then he should be elevated to the best number 2 coach of all time. NO other human being in my world will ever hold a candle to the Bear. Not a subject for discussion that’s the way I feel and it is after all my space. So for this week I’m going to call off the dogs and try to coast another week just the way Bama will do for most of this young season.

The way Bama finished last season is more than enough to put them in the title game but as we all know the games must be played. If and that a huge “IF” Bama stays with a limited number on injuries then there should no reason not to “pencil” in the Tide. Unlike many in Baton Rouge that’ve already written off this season you must have faith in your coaches and players. I don’t understand the way people are walking around and looking at a coaching change. LSU is NOT let me repeat that, LSU IS NOT a top ten team and fans must get over their hurt feelings and stay in their seats for the entire season. With luck and a few breaks the Tigers could play close to home in DECEMBER if Shreveport will invite them. So, take a few minutes and see if I was right or wrong about the future of Tide football way back when.

For the second year in a row “Little Nicky” and the Alabama Crimson Tide has reached the BCS National Title Game. That in itself is a major deal taken into effect the way rankings are done in today’s mega dollar sports programs. So much is also depended on the financial gain companies and the individual schools are banking on in the return for the millions of dollars handed to coaches, their staffs and just general costs incurred with the major colleges.

But let me get to the so called disrespect given to LSU’s Tigers. I keep reading how some feel this year’s team was slighted when the Cotton Bowl chose the Aggies of Texas A&M over a higher rated LSU team. Sure the facts are LSU is ranked one step higher and many feel they should’ve gotten the nod to go play in Big “D”. But the powers that be wanted a home team that is led by a Heisman candidate which of course A&M does possess.

Now if many are angered by this fact all I can say is “GET USED TO IT”! It’s only gonna gets worse when the NCAA conducts the new playoff system next year where the four highest ranked teams will get the nod to begin a much troublesome attempt at satisfying hungry fans craving a Crowned Champion that is settled in 4 short 15 minute quarters!

The new system will only increase the number of teams striving for a crown by just two extra teams. There will be no less than a dozen teams every year crying they were disrespected by not getting one of the four bids. That’s each and every year! Cry all you want, many fans are sure their teams will not be left out but I can guarantee you this; your odds are better at winning a Super Ball Lottery than to rein in a chance to play within the new system.

So, LSU fans, get those long awaited plane tickets to Atlanta and enjoy the Chick-Filet Bowl cause it ain’t gonna get any better in the future.

One thing I’d like to do is draw attention to the fact that 6 of the top 10 teams in the final regular season poll are from the SEC. What do we need to take from this? Great teams, sure. Great schools, maybe. Great coaches, no, not too sure. No, the attention I’d like to bring up is the fact that southern states are consistently ranked high when we compete on the football field. Yet are always near or at the bottom when we compete in the job market (earned income) by workers in these same southern states!!

So, maybe we as working people trying to make a decent living should start hiring coaches to run our state legislatures. That’s a bunch to take in all at one time and it’s exactly where I’d like to leave everyone train of thought till next week and maybe the crisis we have in our take home pay might start to creep into conversations a lot more often in the South.

For the South will NEVER rise again till we find a way for its people’s income to also rise just as the cost of a winning football program continues to skyrocket!!!!

Till next week…
