THE WIZARDRY OF OS
As a Tiger fan, it is disappointing to watch LSU games on TV and see the stadium empty and quiet down so early into the second half of games. I am sure there are many factors, but I think the biggest factor is that the second half of LSU games these days has the feel of the last preseason game in the NFL.
This commentary is not a put down to LSU coaches or players, but it is an observation of the result of dominating in the style that LSU dominates. The fact is that from a fans perspective it is hard to find something of interest to watch in the second half (just like the last preseason NFL game).
As for me, I have found it interesting to watch the freshman linebackers and young defensive lineman late in the game. Offensively, I got nothing. I am glad LSU is able to dominate the line of scrimmage and run out the clock. But, I am still searching for something interesting. My hope is that the coaches will decide they need to let a backup quarterback run the whole offense just in case Mettenberger goes down some aren't caught in the same position as Arkansas.
So after the first two games, I think LSU's season will break into three types of games.
The first type I will call "NFL preseason." Those will be the games where the game is at hand starting the second half and the LSU will run the ball 90% of the time. Those games will be against Towson State, Idaho, and Ole Miss.
The second type can be referred to as "wear them down" games. LSU will need to continue to make some plays through the third quarter to take control. Then they will physically impose their will by running over their opponent the whole 4th quarter. I expect those games to be against Auburn, Arkansas, and Mississippi State.
I will call the third type "full games." These are the games that will take 4 quarters (at least) to win. Furthermore, LSU might need to do something to surprise their opponent similar to the halfback pass we saw from Spencer Ware (who apparently is a WAY better passer than Russell Shepard). Two of those games are in this category only because they are on the road, and these two games could easily turn into "wear them down" games. I am referring at Florida and at Texas A&M.
The other two games that fully expect to be "full" games are obviously South Carolina and Alabama. The reason is that both teams’ have defenses that are good enough and deep enough to hold up the entire game. In addition, their offenses are balanced and can flip the field. Consequently, LSU will have to do one of two things they have yet to demonstrate this season. One, they will have to force a turnover to score or set the offense up with a short field (think the Arkansas or Georgia games last year). The other, is to execute and break tendencies on offense to drive the whole field against a top 10 defense. This is the option we have not seen for a while in Tigertown. And I believe this is the option that we must see in order for LSU to play for a national championship.
On a completely different topic, I wanted to share a personal story from my last year of teaching. I was having a tremendous year in the classroom and many thought I could have been teacher of the year. But toward the end of the year, my principal told me that we was shutting me down with a month to go in the year because so many teachers burnout and he didn't want that to happen to me. I told the principal that I live in the moment, I am not promised tomorrow, and I want to do my best for these kids and the community today! He said that did not matter and his mind was made up. Pretty crazy, huh?!
Of course that story was totally made up in honor of the Washington Nationals. This story has me totally baffled except for the part that Strasburg's head wasn't into his last start. Ya think?!! Geez!! If I ever think of being a Nationals fan, I have told my friends to remind me NOT to do it.
In contrast to the Nationals and in the ultimate irony, the NFL is interested in player safety, but they allowed Jason Whitten to play last week with a damaged vital internal organ. Amazing!
As for the Saints, I know most of the media is focusing on the coaching aspect and not having Sean Payton. Yet, I can remember performances similar to the one I saw Sunday each year under Sean Payton.
When the Saints, turn it over 3 times, allow pressure on Brees, and don’t run the ball efficiently they lose. Throw in the bad penalties, time of possession, and a poor job on third down both ways, and it is amazing the Saints were a Hail Mary away from overtime.
If you are a Saints fan, you have to be concerned (cause let’s face it, we are Saints fans and that is what we do) and frustrated. The reason is that the mistakes were amplified by their timeliness. The Colston fumble took away 3-7 points. The pass interference on Harper took away a possession by the Saints and gave the Skins 7 points. At minimum those swings are a 10 point difference in a game the Saints played poorly and lost by 8. They say great teams win even when they play poorly. I know the Saints are good, but I am hoping they can be great. Either way, I am hoping to see the “good” Saints this Sunday.
HEY REF
By Dennis Dearie,
Veteran Louisiana High School Referee
As we’ve always been told “Life must go on” and so it will. I’d like to thank all those who’ve sent condolences in the sudden and unexpected death of my younger brother. He was an Army veteran that served in the first Persian Gulf War in ’91. He served proudly and never hesitated to tell everyone that would listen about the plight of modern day soldiers.
He’d always tell me that in this politically correct world that the label “Hero” is wasted on true soldiers. He’ll be missed very much as he wasn’t just a brother he was my friend. We shared a lot life’s headaches but many happy times too. He’d never miss a chance to just come by and share what was going on in his life whenever he was in town. He found “paradise” in the hills of Arkansas, may he rest in peace, my brother, my friend!
Now, I’ll try and see if I can help explain a rule change this year in high school football. Previous years on passes that were close to a sideline the covering official would rule (use his judgment) on whether a receiver would’ve come down in bounds had it not been for the contact by a defensive player. In 2012 the change has taken any and all judgment away from the official.
Play situation; receiver jumps to catch a pass near a sideline, he gains control of the ball where a defensive player hits him with such force that he comes down out of bounds never touching the playing field. Ruling is an incomplete pass. It is now the receiver’s job to place at least one foot inside/on the playing or it will be ruled incomplete. There really isn’t any room here for arguing, right?
Let’s take a quick look at the so-called horse-collar tackle. For a flag to come out the defensive player must grab the inside back or side collar of the shoulder pads of the runner and pull BACKWARD or SIDEWARD bringing the player to the ground. Key wording here “bringing the player to the ground”, so remember that, the player must be taken to the ground. If he pulls or grabs the collar it ISN’T A FOUL.
Concussions are getting a lot of attention in the high school game just like in the NCAA and the NFL. All officials received special training to spot a possible concussion and the steps taken by the LHSAA to minimize further injury to all players in the state. The governing body of high school sports has put in place procedures game officials must abide by in the hopes of avoiding any further damage done to any player.
One step to help in player safety is the proper fitting of helmets. The law of the land calls for a player to be removed from the game for at least one play if his helmet comes off during a live ball. The only way around having to sit out a down is if the helmet came off because of a foul. In other words if a runner is tackled by the facemask and the helmet comes off he will be allowed to replace the helmet and continue playing.
I wanted to comment on the circus between the NFL owners and its game officials. But I feel in order to do the situation justice I’ll wait another week to see if common sense regains a foothold in the brains of the league’s owners. Please remember the basic fact that this is not a strike by the referees but another LOCKOUT BY OWNERS! The owners took it on the chin dealing with the players and are trying to make the refs pay for it. You go figure the rational of an owner in today’s billion dollar derby that the professional game has become.
I’ll end with this thought; owners are paying zillions of dollars for players yet they want to skimp on the men charged with protecting those zillions of dollars of investments… …
Till next week… … \
