As I said last week, LSU’s coaches are going to have to figure out a way to handle some areas where Alabama has a clear advantage.
The Tide’s defensive line is better than LSU’s offensive line. Alabama has receivers that can win 50/50 balls over Donte Jackson or Kevin Toliver. So how can LSU overcome those issues?
Coach Ensminger can use formations to slow down Tim Williams and Ryan Anderson. Sean Payton and the Saints are great at this strategy. Bunch sets that allow tight ends to chip defensive ends and slow down their speed rush is a great way to overcome a disadvantage at tackle.
Giving defensive ends something to think about is something of a Coach Ensminger specialty. Jet motion, draws, bootlegs, option, and possible even the return of the shovel pass are all concepts that can slow down a speed rusher for half a second or take advantage of an overly aggressive speed rusher. Furthermore, running on passing downs and throwing on running downs is a strategy that was not worth mentioning in the past, but is worth watching for Saturday night.
Also, this Alabama defense is not as big and burly as the recent Tide defenses. They are very fast and talented as always. Still, while I said last week that nobody runs on Alabama, I think LSU could have modest success on the ground. I expect LSU to running downhill and right at the Bama ends.
Finally, we have all been begging for LSU to throw to the running backs against Bama for years, and it may actually happen this year. Fournette and Guice might not be able to run for 100 yards, but all-purpose yards are just as good. I hope LSU tests Bama by getting Fournette and Guice the ball in space. Not necessarily through screens (LSU’s lineman aren’t very nimble in space), but option routes and wheel routes.
If all that doesn’t work, I would love to see some Wildcat plays, just to give our offense a numbers advantage in the run game.
As for the defense, I know LSU can hold down the Bama offense. The defense has had trouble handling their emotions early in the game and has gotten off to slow starts as a result. Hopefully, they can start this game with more discipline.
Aranda has been very reluctant to rush more than four this year, and I think he will stay true to form this game. Make Hurts stay in the pocket and definitely have a spy ready to track him down should he try to make plays with his feet.
Either Arden Key or Cam Robinson will solidify their places in the NFL draft on Saturday night as they are sure to match up against each other. Though, I am hopeful that Aranda moves Key around to get different matchups. In addition, I have been wondering if Lewis Neal has been hurt as he has been very quiet and does not appear to have the same motor I expect from him. Tashawn Bower has looked much more explosive in his limited opportunities.
Still, I think the biggest matchup is how Donte Jackson holds up against Stewart and Ridley. Kiffin is masterful with motion and formations to get favorable matchups, and that spot has been the one area LSU’s opponents have been able to have some success. LSU fans and media have been trying to grasp how LSU has been able to adjust so quickly on defense and shut opponents down after halftime.
The best answer has been that LSU is able to change its defensive fronts and coverages at a moment’s notice. The other team then has had a tough time creating the mismatch they want. Hopefully, Aranda can do it one more time because Tre White and Jamal Adams have made it pretty clear that there is little to no chance for success throwing in their direction. The Tide will be looking to attack somewhere else.
Enough of the Xs and Os, what about the trivial stuff? LSU has lost to Bama five times in a row. LSU is 0-3 against the Tide when College GameDay comes to Baton Rouge. The LSU coaches are still trying to manage without an off season to install their true system… okay, that one is not trivial. The experts think Alabama is a touchdown better in Tiger Stadium!
None of that matters. Nick Saban is right about many things, and this week he said this LSU team is undefeated this year. True that! LSU and Alabama are close to even in talent. The game is in Tiger Stadium. LSU will be aggressive and try to attack Bama in a variety of ways as oppose to trying the brick wall strategy. I know I am saying this with purple and gold glasses, but LSU will Beat Bama 27-20!
HEY REF
BY DENNIS DEARIE,

If ever there was a poll that just can’t be believed and should be investigated is the one published by the NCAA with the headline that states “that a majority of fans don’t favor paying athletes”. While I find this statement untrue I just had to stop everything I was doing to read for myself what information was disclosed in this so called poll of sport’s fans?
The whole article was very short but what I found “funny” was nowhere in it did it give out the numbers of fans questioned, their ages, demographics, etc., etc., etc. And it never released any details on the so called anti pay for the student-athletes. Well, that term went the way of T-Rex in that there ain’t no such thing around anymore. They should be referred to as to what they actually are and that is “university employees”.
If you’ve read this column on any regularity you’ll know this writer’s stance on paying “employees”. From now on I’ll never write student-athlete since they are extinct. Getting back to the poll results it shows that 67 percent, up 12 points (I guess they mean percent) actually believe that universities break NCAA rules.
The increase it is thought stems from two highly publicized cases; Harvard and Miami. In the Harvard case which sounds just too funny to be true but they report the school issued academic sanctions against approximately 60 students for a cheating scandal on the final exam in a class on of all things: CONGRESS!
Now come on, this has to be made up. Maybe the students started studying the way our Congress works and decided stealing, lying and cheating is the way to get what you want. Not what you earn but what you want and isn’t that the way not only our lawmakers are perceived but how the vast majority get ahead?
Oh, sure, I can hear it now, how can I write something like that. Let me just put a couple names out there you might recognizes; Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Lance Armstrong. All three swore on the Bible they didn’t do drugs, didn’t lie, didn’t steal but all are liars. Armstrong was proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt in a court of law. The court of common sense decided the case of the other two athletes.
But the article didn’t say anything about the Miami case and I find that odd since the Hurricanes are known for going way outside the lines of the law and the rules. I guess maybe they didn’t have room for “old” news? So, as I finished the short column not a single word on the so called vote on not paying employees.
I mean the whole reason for a headline is to get the reader to notice something they may want to read about. As in my case, I just wanted to see how many ignorant people there were that answered “no” to this question. In this day and time it really shouldn’t surprise me, I mean the working people of this country can’t stand to see another worker to get ahead. Big business was very successful in their “Divide and conquer” war against those that have to punch a clock to make a living.
The NCAA is rewarded in BILLIONS of dollars by keeping the vast majority of the money that is generated by all of this “FREE LABOR”. But let me ask a simple question “Why are they called student athletes in the first place”? The scam run by both the NCAA and the “tax free” non-profit NFL is downright absurd. Most of the players working on the football field are from poor families and neither the NCAA nor the NFL educates their employees the mundane task of balancing a checkbook. So when these kids that have never had anything have millions of dollars dropped in their laps
Don’t start about all the sports that never make a profit and are supported by basketball and football. The ONLY and I do mean ONLY reason those sports are still on the books is because so many students still play those sports and the families of these kids are the reason Deans keep footing the bills. Mom and Dad still have some clout or maybe I should say “You don’t bite the hand that feeds you” so it’s sort of a tradeoff.
But to not pay the employees that generate BILLIONS of dollars is not right, never will be right and should be abolished ASAP if not sooner. Pay those that make it all possible! For those universities that think they can generate these sums of dollars on their own without these young EMPLOYEES all I can say is go ahead and try. And every one of them that believe they can make it without paying their athletes all I can say is this; they’re be extinct along with the dinosaurs!!
