GOD BLESS UKRAINE AND THE USA!!!!
THURSDAY NIGHT LIGHTS!
Coach Brett Beard’s Denham Springs Yellow Jackets, coming off a season opening 28-13 victory on the road vs Mandeville HS, return to action tonight (Thursday night) vs Glen Oaks. Sport N Center Yellow Jackets Warmup comes your way at 6:00 pm this evening. Josh Ward and Mitch Covington are on the call. I’ll be contributing to pre-game, half-time and post-game. Tune in to Family Radio, 91.9 FM, Baton Rouge or on the net at JonFineProductions.com.
ESTEEMED GUESTS
I’ll be interviewing Denham Springs HS Girls Basketball coach Rudy Smith on Sport-N-Center Jackets Warmup. Denham Springs HS Principal Wes Howard joins me on the A&A Discount Tires Half-Time Report
Rough week during Mandeville broadcast for guest appearances. Our Sport-n-Center Jackets Warmup scheduled guest—Denham Springs Baseball coach Trave Hopkins was stuck on I-12 East heading to the ballpark. We had an abbreviated A&A Discount Tires Half-time interview with DSHS Chaplain Bob Ingalls, marred by technical issues. We hope to reschedule Coach Hop and Brother Bob for later in the season.
A TECHNICAL MONSTROSITY
We apologize, profusely, for the major technical issues we incurred during last week’s Denham Springs game vs Mandeville (at Northshore HS). The stadium from which we broadcast the game is in the middle of nowhere, resulting in poor cell-tower coverage. As a result, after a flawless Sport-n-Center Jackets Warmup, our signal and all forms of communication to the station went dark. We were not able to resume the broadcast until about 2 minutes into the second quarter. This carried us to half-time, when we lost the signal again. Shortly into the third quarter, we got back on the air and were operational for the rest of the broadcast
These virtually unprecedented set of possible adverse broadcasting conditions fell through the cracks in our broadcast preparation. We’ve made provisions so that if we face this set of circumstances again, we hope to be able to be able to deliver a broadcast, from start to finish, uninterrupted
I apologize to Jackets Nation.
SCHEDULIS INTERRUPTUS
The Denham Springs game at Franklinton has been moved from Friday night to Thursday, September 22.
HALL OF FAME BANQUET RESCHEDULED
The Denham Springs HS Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet, scheduled for Thursday, September 22 will now take place on Thursday, October 13, 6:30 pm at Forrest Grove Plantation.

Contact the Guinness World Records? Can one college football team win 86-0 and then lose the following week 86-0? This might happen with Baton Rouge’s Southern University Jaguars.
Last week, coach Eric Dooley’s FCS Jaguars team defeated the NAIA’s Florida Memorial (FMU) Lions 86-0. This week Southern University busses cross-city to face coach Brian Kelly’s SEC LSU Tigers.
Had there been any chance of Southern playing LSU close—minuscule possibility at best—it was negated when LSU fell to Florida State 24-23, stinking up Tiger Stadium last week. From Washington Generals vs Harlem Globetrotters (3 wins vs close to 19,000 losses) to Death and Taxes (undefeated in the history of mankind).
If LSU had defeated FSU, or at the very least made a good accounting of itself, what might have happened is that LSU would be given a contest by Southern for a half, at best, before pulling away from Southern in the third quarter and winning going away. In the fourth quarter, we’d be seeing backups playing for LSU. That is the best-case scenario Southern could have hoped for this week. Prior to Florida State 24 LSU 23.
With LSU’s desultory effort last week, one would think that Kelly will have the Tigers full attention during the lead-up to what should be a slaughter. Could first stringers be playing the entire game? 86-0 could conceivably be the final score.
What is the purpose of LSU and Southern playing? Shouldn’t the winner of a college football game not be pre-determined?
A paycheck. Yes.
This is a money game for Southern. They get paid roughly $750,000 for their services. This figure represents a large portion of Southern’s athletic budget. For LSU, it represents a purchased victory, and some goodwill by helping out their neighboring university.
Win-Win? I’d say Lose-Lose.
Southern University gets demolished. Its 63 scholarship players face an increased chance of injury against the 85-scholarship bigger, faster, stronger LSU Tigers. Forget about scholarships. LSU’s walk-ons would probably beat Southern.—No hyperbole intended. The guaranty for Southern is 2-fold. 750 K and a brutal Loss.
Ironically enough, Southern is in the shoes of its first opponent this season. FMU is in its third season since its resumption of playing Football. Southern represented its first non-NAIA opponent since the Lions program was resurrected. They played its game vs Southern for the same reason Southern is facing LSU this week—cold hard cash… albeit a fraction of the loot Southern will receive for this week’s game. FMU fell 86-0. I surmise it could have been worse.
Another irony is that by doing the right thing—providing an opportunity for Black football players when they started to recruit them in the late 60’s/early 70’s—the SEC and many other Southern schools—hurt the HBCU colleges, whose caliber of athlete took a precipitous decline. A SWAC school vs an SEC school way back when might have been a competitive game. By heavily recruiting the Black athlete, the SEC/Southern schools have rendered a 2022 LSU vs Southern matchup as a prospective Esther Winfield Anderson Ugly blowout.
The SWAC is a conference that once produced the likes of Pro Football Hall of Famers including Tank Younger, Buck Buchanan, Harold Carmichael, Ken Houston, Isaiah Robertson, Otis Taylor, Robert Brazile
Jerry Rice and Walter Payton would come later but still represent a bygone era—now sees very few players on NFL rosters. Can coach Neon Deion Sanders at Jackson State lead a renaissance of the SWAC? He has made a great start, but still faces astronomical odds against elevating just his own program to Prime-Time status, let alone his conference.
If LSU wanted to improve from its week 1 catastrophe, they’d be better off having the 1’s scrimmage the 2’s this Saturday night. If LSU wants to play in a Bowl game—which might be a realistic first goal given its embarrassment vs Florida State—the matchup against FCS Southern is not even entered into Bowl eligibility equation. Should LSU season-ticket holding fans have to shell out their hard-earned cash for this monstrosity? The only way LSU wins this Saturday night is on the scoreboard. 86-0 is a possibility.
And if LSU wants to win 186-0? Schedule FMU… Hyperbole intended, although LSU could win by this score if it wanted to.
286-0? Play Edward Waters, the team FMU defeated to open up its 2022 season… Hyperbole intended, as it would be tough to score this amount of points in 60 minutes. Over under of 200?
Admittedly, based on what we saw last week, I’m not sure if LSU should be favored over the Little Sisters of The Poor, let alone Southern. And, whereas Southern is seeing Green with this week’s game, if somehow Southern pulls off a miraculous upset of almost unprecedented proportions, could Brian Kelly be seeing Pink… as in Pink Slip? No Hyperbole.
DO-RE-MI.
Go Jackets!

When the Jackets have secured a victory, Ward will indicate that the victory is in the bank, brought to you by Bank Plus.
Sport-N-Center owner Stacy Phipps (Baseball) and Big Mike O’Neal (Football) were athletes at Denham Springs HS. Ralph Sellers Chevrolet Parts Manager Jim McChristian, a former Jackets color commentator, says he was an athlete at Denham Springs HS, but we have had a difficult time verifying this claim! lol
Fine expressed that he is especially appreciative of the loyal commercial and name mention sponsors the broadcasts have had on Jon Fine Sports Productions’ Denham Springs HS play-by-play broadcasts throughout the years. Many have been with the broadcasts on a year-in, year-out basis. Fine expressed hope that listeners will have the opportunity to patronize these businesses and let them know they heard about them on DSHS Football radio broadcasts.
