I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW THE RAIN IS GONE

TAKE IT TO THE LIMIT ONE MORE TIME

A daily sports talk radio program, SPORTSGUMBO—Denham Springs will debut this Monday, September 19, 7am, on Family Radio, 91.9 FM. Geared towards the Denham Springs sports fan (but can be listened to by all), our program will focus on Denham Springs sports, LSU, the Saints and topics of local and national interest.

SPORTSGUMBO—Denham Springs will be hosted/produced by yours truly, Jon Fine, and air Monday—Friday, 7am—8am, on Family Radio, 91.9 FM. The program can be heard on the Net, too on JonFineProductions.com.

For more information, please see extensive press release below.

REDSHIRT SEASON

We’ll take 2016 off. Denham Springs HS Football radio broadcasts will not air this season. The flood submerged the tower of Fox Sports Radio, 1210AM and there is no other viable station to carry the games. We apologize to Denham Springs Football fans. This will be only the 2nd time in 23 years that we will not produce these broadcasts.—In 2012, Clear Channel’s Gospel format precluded our broadcasts. (Well, there goes our redshirt season, if we abided by NCAA rules!)

We look forward to the 2017 “radio broadcasting season” and wish Dru Nettles Jackets the best of luck in 2016.

DENNIS

Please keep Dennis Dearie in your thoughts and prayers. In addition to losing everything in the flood, Dennis lost something more important—his Dad

We look forward to the day when Hey Ref returns to our newsletter and will pray for Dennis and his family.

THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

Maybe I should have used a mask more when working in flooded homes. So far this football season, my eyes aren’t seeing what others are seeing.

Honestly, I didn’t see a big difference between Etling and Harris. Don’t get me wrong. Etling’s presence sparked the offense like Harris sparked the offense when he came in for Jennings and Jennings brought a spark when Mettenberger got hurt. Though, the definition of a spark that it will provide a quick burst of energy and then fade out.

I hope Etling does not fade out, but that second half was pretty ugly. I suspect LSU is stuck with Etling no matter how he performs, though. Especially since Harris is most likely gone mentally like his friends at wide receiver that realized they chose the wrong offensive system and transferred.

But back to Etling, I keep reading about the great job he did in checking down to running backs. I don’t consider designed screen passes check downs. In addition, he was just as ineffective utilizing the middle of the field as most LSU quarterbacks in recent memory.

Of course, it is a small sample size, so I am not making a judgement on Etling, yet. Meanwhile, the LSU fan base has reacted as if LSU has the next Drew Brees. Tiger fans are the greatest. One week, they are ready to accept the coach’s resignation. The next week they are back in the SEC hunt with the backup quarterback.

Speaking of Drew Brees, I am tired of him setting records for outstanding performance in a losing effort. But I have a goal to stay the eternal Saints optimist this year. So here it goes.

The Saints were in control of the game, playing exactly how I thought they could this year. Then Lutz missed the 50 yard field goal which gave the Raiders great field position and new life. The simple fact is that there is only a tiny margin for error for the Saints.

The defense was playing well, then Breaux went down for good, and Dennis Allen got extremely conservative on defense. He only rushed 3 men on many occasions and stopped blitzing. He was trying to avoid the big play and the Raiders got big play after big play. By the time, Allen got aggressive again it was a bit too late, and two defensive penalties extended the Raiders drive.

As bad as the pass defense was at the end, the Saints lost because they completely fell apart in the middle against the run.

At least the offense was fun to watch.

Now, CJ Spiller is gone, though. It blows my mind that the Saints could not use him in some fashion on offense or get something, anything in a trade. Most of the time, I can at least find some logic in the Saints moves even when I disagree. This one is baffling. Especially since through my eyes (again

I might have an issue), I saw Spiller as the Saints most explosive running back in the preseason, and nobody says he is a bad guy.

Ingram, Hightower, and Lasco certainly cannot break any long runs or long runs after the catch like Spiller against the Cowboys last year. Cadet is iffy in his breakout speed. Is Payton going to trust Murphy and put in him on offense? Who knows and who knows if it will matter if the defense can’t get better at cornerback fast. Wait… optimistic. Who Dat!

PRESS RELEASE

SPORTSGUMBO-DENHAM SPRINGS

A revitalizing city with a new daily sports talk show! SportsGumbo-Denham Springs will debut on Monday, September 19 and will target the sports fan in Denham Springs. Hosted and produced by veteran Denham Springs HS announcer/producer Jon Fine, SportsGumbo-Denham Springs will concentrate on sports topics of interest to the sports fan living in or having come from Denham Springs. Topics will include Denham Springs HS athletics, LSU, the Saints, Louisiana sports figures and the national scene. Callers to the program will be encouraged. SportsGumbo—Denham Springs will air Monday—Friday, 7am—8am on Family Radio, 91.9 FM and on the net at JonFineProductions.com.

Fine said that what prompted the idea of having SportsGumbo-Denham Springs was the cancellation of Denham Springs HS Football radio broadcasts in 2016. “With Fox Sports Radio, 1210AM, being non-operational due to the flood and no other viable stations presenting themselves to air DSHS Football games, the games will, unfortunately, not air this season. So, instead, why not start up a sports-talk show for the Denham Springs community?”

Although SportsGumbo-Denham Springs has been designed as a sports talk show, Fine asserts that discussion of the flood will, initially, transcend sports coverage and will have a presence for a long while down the line. “No pun intended, but there is a fine line between providing listeners with a healthy respite from the flood by discussing sports as opposed to taking the opposite perspective and talking extensively about the flood. We hope to do both. We’ll have lots of interviews, early on, with local officials and address the flood. People can call up to express themselves on flood topics. Maybe we’ll serve as a little bit of a cathartic. On the other hand, we hope to offer flood-weary people a bit of a healthy reprieve from their daily reality by giving them a quality local sports talk show. It will be somewhat of a balancing act. But, I believe both approaches can complement each other and both are critical in the emotional recovery process. We hope that every weekday between 7am to 8am, SportsGumbo—Denham Springs can offer a little assistance in both areas.”

Fine had high praise for the sponsors of the show. “The businesses in Denham Springs are incredible to deal with on a year-in, year-out basis. In light of the recent tragic situation, their stepping up and backing this concept is astounding, even for them. They’re simply the best. I hope our listeners will regularly patronize our sponsors’ businesses. They’re exceptional… every single one of them”

SportsGumbo-Denham Springs and the Livingston Parish News have formed an alliance to cross-promote each other. Fine is excited. “I look forward to working with the Livingston Parish News as they rebuild their newspaper and we build our program. They’ve always been unbelievable to work with

I look forward to that kind of relationship.”

Fine listed 4 Goals of SportsGumbo—Denham Springs: They include providing the Denham Springs listener with a quality show that helps ease the burden just a bit on the road to recovery, affording top-notch coverage for all sports at Denham Springs HS, to one day expand to a second hour and to be in position to one day be the top sponsor of Denham Springs HS athletics.

How can supporters of SportsGumbo—Denham Springs help “the cause”? Fine said that program enthusiasts can listen to the show, call the show when they deem appropriate, spread the word to their friends in Denham Springs and Livingston Parish, patronize sponsors and let them know they heard about their business from SportsGumbo-Denham Springs and (when a Facebook page materializes in the next week) like us on Facebook and, if possible, become actively involved with our Facebook page.

Fine is a native of Valley Stream, New York. Fine came down south to work in radio in Tallulah, LA in September 1982, 2 months after graduating from Penn. He has never left the state. The following year, he went to Lake Charles, where he served 2 stints as the radio play-by-play announcer for McNeese State Football and Basketball, while starting Lake Charles’ first ever sports-talk show. In 1991, Fine moved to Baton Rouge, where he has resided since. Fine hosted drive-time radio sports talk shows in Louisiana from 1983—2010. His programs have aired mostly in Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Lake Charles. At its apex, the 2 hour morning drive daily sports-talk show he produced and co-hosted (with Tommy Krysan), SportsGumbo, originated from Baton Rouge and was carried by stations in New Orleans, Lake Charles, Monroe and Alexandria. Fine also owns an EBay sports publications store, ArrestedDevelopmentMediaGuides, which can be accessed via www. JonFineProductions.com.

Fine says SportsGumbo-Denham Springs is intended to run at least through early December. If, at that time, its popularity should warrant it, Fine will look to expand the program further, with the ultimate goal being a 52 week a year, 2 hour weekday morning program for Denham Springs.

Scheduled guests for the week of September 19 on SportsGumbo—Denham Springs include Denham Springs Mayor Gerard Landry, Denham Springs City Councilman Scooter Kean and DEMCO representative David Latona.
