THE WIZARDRY OF OS
Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High
With football season in the rear view mirror (and me trying to ignore the mirror), I was looking forward to focusing on the success of LSU basketball. Then Anthony Davis did what we all feared he would do and told the world he has had enough in New Orleans.
I don’t blame Anthony Davis, just like I didn’t blame Chris Paul. Players in the NBA have great control over their situation and markets like New Orleans are not able to keep the top “superstars.” When Cleveland can’t keep LeBron James even though he is from Cleveland, that is a bad sign. Kevin Durant left Oklahoma City. You know the list.
I don’t think it is fair to claim the organization has “wasted” seven years with Anthony Davis, though. Three years of waste is a fair criticism. The first three years is simply developing the superstar when he is 19, 20, and 21. Last year was not a waste as the team was playing very well when Cousins went down and then managed to finish strong anyway. I am fine with saying the Pelicans wasted three years with Anthony Davis.
Still, it is much harder in the NBA, where cities like New Orleans have to be great in a few areas in order to present a quality product.
First, there must be great stability in coaching and management. New Orleans has been pretty good in this area. The organization has been very patient with Dell Demps as the general manager. While the Pels haven’t kept a coach very long, they have made fewer head coaching changes than other teams considering the lack of success in New Orleans.
Second, you cannot make huge contract mistakes and this is where the Pelicans have not done well. Asik’s contract and a few others have been horrendous mistakes.
Third, teams like New Orleans must be great at player development. Injuries are going to happen in an 82 game season and players get tired. The roster must have depth to overcome these natural occurrences. Consistently, in the Anthony Davis era, there has been little quality depth. Further, since it is going to be hard to attract the big names, the development of young players is vital.
The Pels have taken the approach of getting rid of young players or not even spending time to develop them if they don’t produce quickly. Players like Buddy Hield and Langston Galloway are moved out quickly. Meanwhile, other organizations are able to work and grow these players.
The good news is that the NBA is still a basketball league. Those who cover the NBA always want to make it about superstars, but basketball is still the game being played. Quality shooting, sharing the ball, rebounding, playing defense together, and toughness are still the key components to success in the game.
This organization can no longer completely disregard the draft. There are good players that can fill out a roster all over the world. The Pels have to follow the model of the Saints. If there is a good player in Winnipeg, Beijing, or Pineville and the Pels can acquire the player, then they should do so through the draft, free agency, or trade.
Too many followers of the NBA try to claim success will come to teams who accumulate the most “stars.” After the success of the initial Dream Teams, Team USA thought that bringing stars together was all it would take to win Gold. From 2002-2004, they discovered that you must create a team, and that is when Coach K took over.
My message is that there is hope for New Orleans Pelicans fans. From the despair of what looks like a losing season and probably losing Anthony Davis can be a transition that leads to a consistent, quality product. Hopefully, Anthony Davis’ decision will be a wakeup call to the organization.
I want to at least touch on LSU basketball. Certainly the comeback at Missouri shows that this team is developing an “it” quality. Even when they struggle, it is not for lack of effort or playing together.
The first 38 minutes of the Saturday’s game was extremely frustrating, but I think this performance started in the second half of the Georgia game. Against Georgia, LSU didn’t finish inside, and became overly reliant on Tremont Waters to create offense for everyone. At Missouri, LSU was awful around the goal and the offense was waiting for Waters to do everything which Missouri was determined to not allow.
There is no coincidence that Mays and Smart are the two that ignited and finished the comeback. LSU needs Skyler and Javonte to be aggressive on offense to prevent teams from loading their defense to Waters. Williams, Reid, and Williams have to impact the game inside the paint. Hopefully, the end of the Missouri game gets the whole offense back on track and keeps the Tigers rolling.
HEY REF
This week’s column will be extra short simply because I’m unable to find any subject that would draw any interest since the “ONLY” thing on everybody’s mind is of course Super Bowl LIII. That is if you live anywhere else besides Louisiana. This year’s game will always be tainted since the “no-call” cost the Saints a return trip to the big game. But I do want to mention the cost of game time commercials. The cost has gotten so high some businesses will spend almost half a year’s budget in just 30 seconds.
So, how much will it cost to air a 30 second commercial during the Super Bowl? It’s like when you go to a fancy restaurant in that if you’ve got to ask you can’t afford it. But the numbers being thrown out there are just unreal. For a short 30 seconds you’ll pay CBS somewhere in the range of $5.1 to $5.3 million. That figure is up slightly from last year’s game that averaged just $5.05 million. The NFL does offer a full 60 seconds of time during the telecast but those are too expensive for most companies. The TV networks and the league have set a standard time of 30 seconds which they claim is a BARGAIN!
If the NFL and it’s gelding of a commissioner would’ve thought things thru they could’ve mandated a replay of the Saints and Rams game, pushed everything back a week and charged even a higher cost for those same 30 second commercials. Many people would’ve tuned in simply because it would’ve been the first time in modern history that the NFL replayed a playoff game because of a blatant no call that cost a team a shot at a world championship. So when Goodell says a replaying of the game would’ve been too expensive he surely isn’t much of a business man. Rather he’s nothing but a puppet and a “yes” man to the 32.
In the first NFL-AFL Championship game in 1967 between the Packers and Chiefs those precious 30 seconds cost an average of $42,000 and have constantly increased in cost from year to year. As I went on line to see how much a company would have to pay for their 30 seconds of fame I ran across a few sites where you could take a peek at Super Bowl commercials. The question I’d like to ask is “who doesn’t have a shred of a life that they’d want to sit and watch upcoming adds during the game”?
When I did watch the Super Bowl in years long ago everybody would rush to the bathroom and/or get something to eat or drink during commercials. So, I wonder just who are these people that sit around their flat screen TV’s and enjoy watchingcommercials. I can remember a time where the game was dropped because it had run out of its allotted time and “Heidi” was shown in its entirety. Wow, how times have changed.
I guess the only thing left for me to do is tell everyone who I pick to win the game. I’m always impressed by the thousands of so called experts that will tell you they know who’ll win but they’re just airing their opinions and we know what opinions are and what they’re worth. So, I’ll give it my best when I say the game will come down to two things; one thing that will have a direct bearing on the outcome is IF the Rams can pressure Brady and get him out of the pocket. Brady will slice a defense apart if he has time to “read” the coverage.
The second thing will be can the Patriots stop the running game. If anyone noticed Todd Gurley didn’t run much against the Saints. I’ve not seen any report stating he’s injured and was held out of most of the game due to an injury. The Pats don’t have a strong secondary so if they stop the Rams’ running game then and only then will they play a deep six. Their hope is that Rams QB Jared Goff will wilt under the pressure of the game and make throwing mistakes like he’s in his first NFL season.
There you have it, get your bets in early because once Vegas learns that “Hey Ref” has predicted the winner the line is sure to change. OOPPSS, sorry about that, I didn’t mean to put the horse before the cart: New England 27 Rams 16…
