THE WIZARDRY OF OS
LSU Football Plan A:
Physically dominate the offensive line of scrimmage. Run at will, and throw when the opponent begs for mercy. Dominate defensively setting up the offense. Then run the opponent into the ground until the game ends.
This plan works when the offensive line can totally dominate the opponent. LSU was able to follow this model in most games last year and the first three games this year. The problem is they have lost Chris Faulk to injury, and LSU can’t just dominate the line of scrimmage against every team on their schedule.
LSU Football Plan B:
Run on offense; only throw when necessary while making sure not to make any mistakes. Dominate defensively. Wait for a playmaker on defense or special teams to make a huge play to take a lead. Then, run the opponent into the ground until the game ends.
This plan worked against teams like Arkansas and Georgia last year. The problem this year is the offense has been mistake prone with drops and turnovers. The bigger issue is the loss of Tyrann Matthieu and Mo Claiborne’s play making abilities on defense and special teams.
LSU Football Plan C:
Hope plan A and B work at some point. Just joking. But we have yet to see one in a while. That has to be concerning to a LSU fan since the only reason LSU beat Auburn is the same reason Auburn is 1-3. Auburn is an average to below average SEC team.
Obviously, Mettenberger has to take care of the ball better in the red zone (and everywhere else), and penalties are an issue. But, if those are the only corrections LSU makes, then I can’t see them winning 10 games.
The loss of personnel has caught up to LSU. They can’t JUST impose their will on quality SEC teams. Defensively, they are good enough to win a national championship. Though, they are not good enough to win on defense alone. Consequently, I will offer some ideas of a Plan C:
• Utilize Beckham and Shepard out of the backfield through speed sweeps, shovel passes, end arounds or reverses. For those that have seen Central football games, I refer you to how Coach Simoneaux uses Gary Triplett.
• Every once in a while, break the huddle and split Mettenberger out at wide receiver with Shepard or Ware at quarterback. Allow them to run the zone read, option, or pass once in a blue moon. Again, if you want to see what that would look like, I refer you to what Stanford, Oklahoma, and USC have done in the past two years with Luck, Jones, and Barkley. It is still conservative on offense, but creative.
• Do not run many boot legs unless it is a way to get the ball to a play maker. Mettenberger is not accurate on the run and our TEs are not play makers.
• Fake end arounds in the run game to slow down pursuit.
Fortunately, the Tigers came away with the win. Hopefully, the LSU coaches have now learned a lot more about their team through this week, and can make the appropriate adjustments.
Speaking of having multiple plans, I have to give major credit to Coach Ken Hilton and the Central defensive coaching staff. While the defense struggled at times in the first three games, the Wildcats played great defense against Catholic Friday night. I feel like most of the improvement can be attributed to finding ways of getting certain players in positions they are most comfortable to allow their talent to come through. This has taken a little time as the players learn the defense and Coach Hilton learns his players. Nevertheless, the ability to adjust paid off big Friday night.
Not to leave out Coach Simoneaux and the offensive staff who do a great job of utilizing their talent on offense as well. Catholic High has a very good team, and it was good to see Central pull out its 5th win in a row over the Bears.
I am dumfounded by those that excuse the mistakes in NFL officiating by saying, “At least they haven’t cost anyone to lose a game yet.” I wrote that sentence on Sunday, but after Monday night that isn’t even accurate.
I don’t even understand why it had to get to that point for people to be fed up. In a close game, isn’t everything significant? One action or inaction in a game most certainly affects the plays and decisions that follow. No amount of instant replay can fix that.
Even before the Monday night game, the officials have certainly had a huge effect on who wins or loses games. Once again, it is not their fault. NFL officials have years of training for a reason. It is ludicrous to think that the years of training are not necessary.
Personally, I don’t enjoy watching train wrecks or the WWF, and I don’t enjoy the NFL in this state. Consequently, I have stopped watching all games except Saints games (and I am not sure how much longer I will watch those live).
So until the situation is fixed, don’t read this column for NFL insight, I won’t have any (some will say I never have).
HEY REF
Scab-Gate, Scab-Bowl, Scab-? Whatever you want to call it all I can say is “You reap what you sew”. I’ll go one better and say “History repeats itself”. Seems the entire country is all up in arms over the fiasco going on within the National Football League. Just what did people expect to happen when yet again the owners try replacing professional people with armatures? It didn’t work when the players were replaced by has-beens and never-beens. It didn’t work seven years ago when for the first time professional refs were replaced by not professional refs.
The owners are in the business of professional football to do one thing and one thing only and that is to make as much money they can. Isn’t that the “American Way”? Sure it is, the fact the people employed by the NFL are getting screwed at every opportunity is not something new or something worth headlines. The working men and women in this country have been for the last 30 to 40 years taking home less and less.
To tell my age; how many remember Reagan-nomics? That’s where working people lose and lose till there’s nothing left to lose. It goes by another name, “trickle down”!! Working people in today’s America are doing everything they can to just hold onto the things they’ve worked so hard to attain yet it seems employers are constantly doing everything they can to take it all away every chance they get.
So why is our country going nuts over yet another employer screwing its employees? That’s simple, because as a nation, society and people we’ve lost so much the only thing we have left is sports. When every other country on this planet is worried on how to secure its economy, better working conditions for their citizens, coming up with a healthy population and how to take care of the elderly and handicapped, we, America, the SUPER POWER is concerned with getting the right people in place to correctly call touchdowns and first downs!
Well, I don’t want this to become a sermon, we all know I’m right and somehow facing the truth is something we just don’t like to do. So, getting back to the circus called the NFL it was reported late this afternoon (Wed) by ESPN that the warring sides are close to an agreement in ending the LOCKOUT imposed by the NFL owners against its referees.
The facts are this; the owners simply were tired of losing to their employees (the players). So, they figured since everyone hates the refs, we’ll LOCK THE DOORS; gain support from the fans and the refs will have to capitulate and take anything they offer just to get back to calling games. The refs all along never wanted this to happen. Just as the doors were locked to keep the players out of their training facilities so too were the refs LOCKED OUT. All in the hopes of filling the pockets of greedy owners who want everyone to work for minimum wage while they laugh all the way to the bank.
When was the last time game tickets came down in price? Hell, when has anything come down in price? The only thing coming down that I’m aware of is WAGES! So, it shouldn’t be of any surprise whose side I’m on. The one thing I’d like to see happen is for the refs to STAY OUT FOR THE ENTIRE SEASON! The refs can’t win now. Some will say the owners had to give in to demands that they wouldn’t have without all the stress being made by the incompetent replacements. Just as in times of war the only real victory is unconditional surrender. That’s what it’ll take so that fans and the game won’t have another repeat in five to six years down the line.
I’ve refused to comment on what has been going on on the field because actions speak loader than words. Nothing can make a statement that the game is suffering than the ending of Green Bay’s game Sunday night against the Sea Hawks. It was a total cluster-fudge. The replay officials didn’t have the balls to override the total incorrect ruling with the awarded score that cost the Packers the game.
But there’s enough blame to go around. The players are at fault for playing the game. The coaches are at fault for fielding teams without professional refs. The fans are also at fault for walking through the gates and attending games that weren’t what they paid for. With this sue happy nation we live in I’m just confused why some fans didn’t get together and file suit against the league for failing to provide true professional games. The product on the field was no way what I’d call a professional game and it seems the entire country now says I’m right!!!
Till next week, when again, I’ll be right!!!!
