THE WIZARDRY OF OS
Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High School
"They are who we thought they are," is a famous rant from Dennis Allen. What LSU fans need to accept is that, "they are not who they normally are."
This year's LSU football team is the opposite of what LSU football has been historically, and that is the reality. It doesn't mean they won't be good or even great on defense next year. It does not mean Chavis doesn't know what he is doing. It doesn't mean any sportswriters or fans have the answer that would fix everything if the Tigers just did what they said. Heck, one week after being torched in zone one writer doesn't want to see man coverage again this year.
Here is the reality. LSU has amazing physical talent on defense. Guys like Corey Thompson, Ronald Martin, and Danielle Hunter look like Eric Reid, Curtis Taylor, and Barkevious Mingo. Hopefully, they will perform like those guys one day. But great defenses are not made by simply having great athletes. Those athletes must know their assignments so they can play fast, they have to know the system so they can play together, and they must do it in the best conference in America.
Whenever these young players start knowing their job, believing in themselves, and believing in the system they will look like a typical LSU defense. If you don't believe me, then ask yourself this question. "Did you foresee Beckham, Mettenberger, or Landry being this good?" Be honest… THIS good? It takes time and chemistry on defense too.
So the defense might not look like a normal LSU defense this year. If you want to know when things will turn around, just watch the line of scrimmage. When LSU starts setting the edge and filling gaps up front the entire defense will look better. The defensive line has always been what separates the SEC from the rest of the country. Meanwhile, the offense will have to carry the team.
As for the offense, I am now totally sold. Obviously, Florida will provide a tall challenge because their defensive front can control the line of scrimmage. That means they don't have to sell out and leave their corners one on one against Landry and Beckham. For LSU to score enough to win against Florida this week a couple of things must happen.
First, the offensive line must play their best game of the year. They haven't been bad, but they have given up too many pressures and the run game, while providing big runs, has not been consistent. The Tigers are scoring through big plays, which are fun, but will be harder to achieve against Florida. As I stated before, I don't expect as many big plays this week because the Gators front seven is so good. Consequently, LSU will need to sustain drives to score.
Second, LSU will have to involve someone else in the passing game besides Beckham and Landry. If Florida singles up against those two then Landry and Beckham have to win those battles. But, if the Gators give safety help, Dickson, Dural, Boone, and the running backs must make plays in the passing game. My hope is the Coach Muschamp is stubborn and chooses to play Beckham and Landry head up because he believes his corners are just that good. And my hope is that he is wrong.
As for the national championship picture it looks like this is a year where one loss will knock a team out of the title hunt. Florida State and Clemson are head and shoulders above the rest of the ACC and one of those two will most likely go undefeated. I think the same is true in the PAC 12 where Stanford or Oregon should win out. Ohio State just passed the most difficult part of their schedule. Of course, Alabama only has two challenges left in LSU and the SEC championship game.
So relax Tiger fans. Enjoy the offense. Realize we need to score points to win. And at the end of the game the rest of the year you will be able to say, “We are who we thought we were.”
One team who is better than we thought they were is the Saints. It is amazing how winning close games early in the year can totally change the fortune of a season in the NFL. Imagine if the Falcons had scored at the end of the game in the opener. The confidence that came with the two close wins to open the season is a huge factor in why the Saints are not just undefeated, but looking like one of the best teams in the NFC. There is still a long way to go, but it is looking like a fun year in New Orleans. Who Dat!
HEY REF
When this writer feels like it’s time to acknowledge how far an athlete has progressed; he comes right out and says it. I have to “tip my hat” to LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger for the way he’s matured and stayed out of trouble in proving many of us wrong when we learned of all the baggage he’ll be bringing with him to Tiger Town. I had my reservations after learning he was signed to a scholarship (at taxpayer’s expense) by Coach Les Miles.
I had my doubts he could come to this town with all his baggage and stay out of our overloaded courtrooms. He’s not only leading the Tigers but he’s doing it in a way in which he’s gained our respect and trust. I want to re-run an article from three years ago to prove to my readers that when I’ve been proven wrong; I’ll be the first to say so. So here it is the actual words used in showing how displeased I WAS when I heard Zach was coming to town. Enjoy, because it’s not often this writer is wrong… …
So much is happening in the Sport’s World that it’s hard to decide what needs reporting on. Many around Baton Rouge say that since we’re an SEC town that developments in and around Auburn, Alabama need the most attention. Well? First off I haven’t seen or read of any FACTS surfacing to make a real judgment call.
Also, I had to ask “if you knew of any improprieties, would you still recruit this athlete”? I got a resounding “NO”. So, I had to ask “Then what would you say if LSU was recruiting such an athlete”. Answers ranged from “LSU is not that type of school to wouldn’t even bat an eye and never attempt to recruit the kid”.
I hated to prove these die-hard Tiger fans wrong but as late as this past Saturday afternoon that’s exactly what’s going on at the Baton Rouge campus. The player in question is Zach Mettenberger of Watkinsville, Ga. At 6-foot-5 and 247 pounds he’s just what the doctor ordered. Even coach Les Miles is drooling to sign him even with the extra baggage.
Charges aren’t being alleged, no he’s pleaded GUILTY to two MISDEMEANOR SEXUAL battery charges and several others. He was a 2009 redshirt freshman at Georgia when the incidents happened and since has been dismissed from the Bulldog’s team. After being let go he enrolled at Butler (Kan.) Community College.
In a November 20th article in the Morning Advocate they reported he led Butler to the Region VI, NJCAA title with a 48 – 0 victory over Hutchinson, Kan. On Dec. 5th he’ll try to make Butler the National JC champs in a game against Navarro, TX.
In that same article, according to Rivals.com he’s the No. 1 Jr. College quarterback prospect. LSU is considered to be a frontrunner for his services and will know his decision when he enrolls at a new school in January. LSU is in need of a quarterback recruit since its returning two players will both be seniors if they enroll for next fall’s classes.
My question to the LSU faithful is do they really need this kind of student athlete coming to town with all the trappings that’ll temp this guilty sex offender? Don’t even throw back in my face that he pled guilty to MISDEMEANOR SEXUAL offenses. If it were your daughter or sister he was involved with would you say these offenses were of a lighter style of crime? The answer would be a resounding “HELL NO”!!!
So, again I ask the LSU family, “Do you want this young man to represent your university”? You have to answer “NO”! Remember, he admitted his guilt and was already kicked off one SEC Football roster. In the instance dogging the University at Auburn that player’s FATHER is ALLEGED to have taken money to have his son sign to play there.
For the last time, I’ll ask the LSU family “Do you want this kind of student athlete to represent your university”? If you’ll turn a blind eye to what he’s admitted to then if or when it happens again what are you going to say to that young woman’s family? THINK long and hard before you ask the Baton Rouge campus to offer him a scholarship. There are many more deserving young men and women that could use the scholarship and we wouldn’t have to always wonder if it’ll happen again.
‘Til next week… …
