THE WIZARDRY OF OS
Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High
Whether you are a fan of the NFL preseason or not, I think we can all agree that pausing between every third play to hear the official announce a penalty is not enjoyable.
Saints fans and coaches are worried about the alarming number of penalties in the first two games, especially the Titans game. The good news is, while 22 is an alarming number, the Saints are not alone.
Through the first two weeks of the preseason there have been on average 19.5 accepted penalties a game. 34 teams have had 10 or more penalties in the 33 games. That is incredible!! Compare that to only 12.5 per game and 9 teams penalized 10 or more times the first two weeks last preseason.
Notice I referred to accepted penalties. So there have been even more interruptions than that. On average there are around 130 plays in an NFL game. If there are approximately 25 interruptions for penalties and 5 interruptions for reviews, then that equates to a stoppage almost once every 4 plays. That is too much.
I think all sports are starting to have this problem. Baseball gets much of the publicity for having pace of play issues, but basketball and football are doing their best to catch up. Almost everything at the end of a basketball game can be reviewed. As a result, the end of a basketball game has zero flow between reviews and timeouts coaches have saved.
Football is headed down the same road. I keep hearing the media and announcers shrug off the alarming number of penalty calls. Even if the number of calls decreases slightly in the regular season, the overall impact to the game is not appealing to me.
On the college side, LSU fans are wondering what they are going to see in two weeks. While Coach Miles tries to treat information like the CIA, he now has as many tells as a bad poker player. So for those wondering, I will translate for you.
We all know defensive tackle is a major area of concern. Miles is down playing the concern at that position. Be worried.
Quentin Thomas was reportedly out for the year with a torn tricep, and now he is not. Use common sense. Glenn Dorsey has the same injury as Quentin Thomas and is out for the year. Thomas may try to play this year, but be realistic. He was a starter, and he will not be effective if he plays at all, which I doubt.
Frank Herron was not being discussed at all in the spring, and now Miles brings him up every chance he gets. Why is Herron being mentioned so much and not Bain or Gilmore? Bain and Gilmore are probably not progressing as many hope.
The good news is Miles is mentioning Beckwith with Welter. Beckwith, who is the more talented player, is starting to catch on and will play. That is good news.
Most of the other positions are secure, except… of course, quarterback.
If you are waiting for me to look in my crystal ball and give you the scoop on the quarterback situation, save your time. I firmly believe the coaches plan is to coach both of the players up and hope that their work on the field speak for itself. I doubt either player has made the decision easy. As a result, I fully expect (as do most people) that the Tigers will open the year in Houston against Wisconsin with the only quarterback with game experience under center. The coaches will cross their fingers that Jennings plays as he did against Iowa, except slightly more accurate with wide open receivers. I also expect a package for Harris they would only use if the offense needed a jump start or they like the flow of the game and field position. The good news is the guessing game is almost over.
