Half empty or half full? How do you see LSU baseball after last weekend heading into the Super Regional?
I certainly understand those who see the glass half empty. Injuries, Cody Glenn hasn't pitched in a week, Ryan Eades looked like he was auditioning for Bull Durham last week while every other start has been short in the last 6 weeks, bad defense, and facing the top MLB pitching prospect in college baseball this weekend.
On the other hand, the half full glass would show this team has shown the depth to absorb the injuries. Glenn should be fresh and might not be needed. Eades is too good to not bounce back, and if he follows his pattern recently, this start will be good. Our defense is too good to play like that again. Gray has plenty of distractions this week and no matter how good he is, he can't pitch runs on the scoreboard.
I am going to take the George Carlin approach, "The glass is too big." I don't actually know how that joke fits into this situation, but I like the joke and I wanted to use it.
The truth is that we are to the point of the season where everyone left playing is really good. College baseball is to the point where all the Super Regional teams are good enough to make it to Omaha and all are capable of winning the National Championship. What happened during the regular season or to this date in the post season does not matter at all. The teams that handle the pressure and play their best will be the teams that survive and advance.
As for LSU's specific matchup this weekend with Oklahoma, I am hoping the SEC prepared LSU for this weekend. When the Tigers faced Arkansas, South Carolina, and Mississippi State this year I always felt LSU just had to find a way to scratch 4 across four runs, and for the most part, four was the magic number.
For the Tiger offense to get there against the Sooner pitching staff I think one of three things will have to happen. One, LSU will need late game heroics against the Sooner bullpen. Two, LSU will have to be much better than they have been recently with situational hitting (moving runners over, getting runners in from third, timely hits, etc). Or three, Katz, Bregman, and Rhymes will have to have All-American weekends.
Stepping back and looking at the entire bracket, I find it very interesting that 14 of the 16 top seeds advanced to the Super Regional round. The other two teams are both two seeds, Rice and Oklahoma. Yet, in The Advocate on Tuesday, there was an article about how the SEC didn't perform well the first weekend and was overrated.
I find the reasoning in the article shaky at best. The main argument was that SEC teams lost to small schools that don't invest as much in baseball. Yet anyone who knows baseball understands that anything can happen in one game. This understanding is why the baseball tournament in double elimination.
The article was also critical of the SEC because LSU didn't play well and some other teams didn't "sweep" through their regional. Yet, the ACC which was considered the other top conference had their top team, North Carolina, sit on the brink of elimination twice Monday. They even risked the health of their top pitchers to win.
The fact is it does not matter how they advanced. The ACC and the SEC have 4 teams each in the Super Regional round which is half of the remaining 16 teams. The ACC had 5 host sites and one of them, Virginia Tech, was one of the only two host teams to not advance. The SEC had four host sites and won all four.
Presently, I think the SEC has done just fine.
HEY REF
Here we go again! There’s a storm brewing in the NFL and it could result in another work stoppage by the players. Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed last week after his meeting with the owners that expanding the regular season to eighteen (18) games was addressed. If things can be worked out with hosting cities an expanded regular season could be in place as soon as next year; the 2014 season.
The owners still claim they need the extra revenue those games will provide to offset the higher salaries the players are demanding. The players have once again said “no” and will not agree to any extra regular season games claiming the extra games would simply expose them to a heightened risk of injury. They also feel the present number of regular season games (16) is enough. Many players feel the possibility of completing a season without serious injury is almost impossible with the present number of games and any extra games pose too much of a risk to their future health as their main opposition to expanding the season any further.
Both sides have legitimate arguments and it’ll probably cause a major walkout by established veterans and no doubt a long court battle will be needed to settle this issue. I was/am one of those that didn’t support extending the regular season from fourteen to the present sixteen games. My number one reason in not supporting that expansion of the regular season was/is the same as it is now; injuries. Football takes a tremendous toll on the body and no amount of training can protect the players enough to warrant an extra couple of games in the hopes it’ll put more cash in the owner’s pocket. That’s why we’ve got to ask the league “just how many games is enough”?
The owners must know by now that the fans are “tapped” out and can’t afford another round of price increases. If they fail to understand this then the future of professional football looks very bleak. You can draw just so much water from a well before it runs dry. I was priced out of attending games many years ago and so were many of my friends.
Recently for the first time in many years I was able to attend a Major League Baseball game. There was a time when I and a group of my friends would travel every summer to Houston to see the Astros and Cubs. As time went by I began to notice that our group was getting smaller and smaller. We all had good excuses as to “why” we couldn’t go but at the end of the day the only reason we couldn’t make the trip was it cost too much.
The owners again claim they’re going broke and need to add more games to help them cope with rising costs. But what can fans do to help them cope with the rising costs of going to the stadium? Not very much! Can you imagine the answer you’d get if you asked your boss for a raise so you can hold onto your season tickets? The NFL takes in over $8 BILLION a year and they’re going broke? Give me a break; fans can no longer absorb the increasing costs of attending an NFL game.
I don’t see a way out of this mess for the fans except to say you’re gonna be required to dig a little deeper for the privilege of watching a live NFL game from the sidelines… …
Till next week… …
