THE WIZARDRY OF OS
Assistant Basketball Coach/Head Swimming Coach at Central High School
I am doing my very best imitation of a real reporter right now as I am beginning to write my story before the end of the event that I am covering. While my deadline is not until tomorrow, I am hoping the process is therapeutic.
I know everyone has their reason why LSU was 2 and done at the CWS. I choose to summarize it this way. LSU played well below the level that allowed them to win the most regular season games in LSU history. Most frustrating, is how poorly they played and yet were still probably two timely hits away from winning both games.
Instead of accepting that fact, many people want to blame the ball park, the new bats, or style of play. Yet, LSU won the SEC Tournament in Hoover’s spacious park. When it comes to style of play and coaches decisions, it is easy to find fault because the team did not execute well. In those cases, though, very few coaching decisions work.
What I continue to appreciate the most about Coach Mainieri, is that when he makes a decision he is willing to explain the decision honestly and in great detail. It is not possible to get everyone to agree with the decision. And it is not possible for every decision to work (see Bill Belichick against Indy in 2009). Nevertheless, he makes the best decision he can with the information he has, and you can tell his players believe in those decisions.
Baseball is the ultimate player’s game. Strategy can't overcome poor defense, poor hitting discipline, and sometimes just bad baseball fortune. For the second year in a row, LSU lost their last two games of the year because they could not produce offensively.
Bregman (will be a 1st round pick), Rhymes (15th round pick), Ibarra (1st team All-SEC), and Jones (3rd round pick) combined to go 1 for 31 with 4 walks, 4 strikeouts, 14 left on base, and 2 double plays at the worst imaginable times.
I could go on, but we have seen championship teams at LSU. In the CWS, the "stars" on those teams played great and some unsung heroes stepped up. That was simply not the case with this team.
The Tigers had a squeaky clean regular season, yet the post season was rocky at best from the start. Laird was hurt before the first pitch of the SEC Tournament and McMullen was injured in the regional. Cody Glenn was suspended which led to him being off for 3 weeks between starts. The Tigers were shaky on defense on many occasions including 5 errors against Sam Houston. Ryan Eades had only one quality start out of three. And for good measure, Bregman and Rhymes collided on a fly ball.
This is one of those years where LSU played its best baseball in the first half of the year. Vanderbilt and North Carolina played their best the first ¾ of the year. North Carolina is the only one still playing and they had to sell their soul (risking injury and burn out to their starting pitchers) to survive.
Last year’s LSU team used a disappointing finish against Stony Brook as motivation for this year. Hopefully next year’s team can use the disappointment from this year’s CWS, to propel them to even better things next year.

One thing I refuse to do is to be like everyone else. So with that in mind I’ll refrain from giving excuse after excuse as to why LSU was so abruptly shown the exits in Omaha at this week’s World Series Tournament. First things first; it wasn’t one thing that caused an early end to what should’ve been the best chance in a long time to come back home with “all the marbles”.
As true champions win by hitting on all cylinders this team showed it can lose and lose big by not hitting on all cylinders. Hitting sucked, defense stunk and coaching decisions were appalling. The fact that in the two games played in the 2013 tournament LSU did set one record no team should be proud of. And that record is a very disappointing total of scoring just three runs which of course sums it all up. In baseball you don’t have to score a lot of runs but you do have to score at least one more than your opposition that night.
One basic truth is: “it’s not important how many hits you get but it is totally important WHEN you get those hits”. Stranding runner after runner on the bases will doom every team no matter how they wound up in Omaha. In the first game LSU was being handcuffed all night but was still very much in the game in the bottom of the ninth. So when UCLA committed an error which allowed the leadoff hitter to reach first base it felt like a rally was at hand.
So, basic baseball calls for one thing and one thing only in this situation; bunt the man over and into scoring position. If the Tigers were watching the Bruins at the plate they should’ve been able to understand and grasps the concept. UCLA hitters were playing mini-ball all night and allowed LSU to shoot itself in the collective foot. Which of course is what gave the California team 2 UN-EARNED runs and a ticket to the winner’s bracket.
LSU continued to play their worse ever when they came back a couple days later to face another stunned team in North Carolina. Even though the Tigers were able to double their run production from the first game it once again gave away a game it should’ve been able to win. But again the Tiger offense was stagnant when runners were standing on the bases.
There are no excuses when you get to Omaha and spend less than 48 hrs. in town. What I’ve written about isn’t meant to offer excuses for the two stunning losses rather they are reasons we’re coming home after one of most disappointing ends to a season with such promise. The Tigers might not have won a Series title this year but it did tie a school record for wins; 57. That mark was first accomplished by the Tiger team that did win the ’97 CWS and although this season ended not in the way we’d have preferred let’s be happy and dwell on all the positives that was the 2012-13 season.
A quick note on the new schedule that the LHSAA has just put in place for its football championships that’ll be played over a three day weekend instead of the traditional two day affair we’re so accustomed to. Since the majority of school PRINCIPALS voted to expand the format to nine divisions to include “select” schools the first playing date will be THURSDAY Dec. 12TH.
Beginning at 12:30pm the Division III game will begin in the Louisiana Super Dome followed at 4:30 by the Division II contest then concluding the day’s events with the Division I Championship scheduled 8:30 start. Day two, Friday the 13TH, also starting at 12:30pm the Class 1A kickoffs followed at 4:30 with Class 2A then the 3A game will round out the day’s happenings with an 8:30 scheduled start.
Saturday the 14TH will begin a half hour earlier at noon to decide the Division IV title followed by the Class 4A game at 4:00 and ending the three day marathon with the 5A game’s kickoff for an 8:00pm kickoff. It’ll be very interesting to see if the organization will be able to keep things running smoothly for an entire three days. I do expect mistakes to be made after all this is the first time the State Titles venue will go a full three days so patience is one thing all parents, players, coaches and fans should bring with them.
Some might think that it’s too early to prepare for the football season but I can tell you in south Louisiana high school football is beginning to become a full twelve month affair. In about three short weeks football officials state wide will begin their summer meetings to address all the rule changes. Some of us have already begun studying the rules simply because coaches don’t allow us a single down to get into midseason form.
We must be in the prime of our season beginning with scrimmages and if we’re not we’ll hear about it from the coaches starting with the opening whistle and until we’re out of the stadium. And we relish the challenge, most of us take it very seriously and want nothing more than to be on top of things way before we suit up and walk out onto the stadium turf. Official’s meetings will begin the first of July in Baton Rouge so if you think you can handle the heat then just drop me a line for all the information on how to begin your career as a High School Football Official.
Till next week… …
