I was unable to watch the LSU Spring Game live on Saturday. As a matter of fact, it wasn't until Tuesday that I was able to watch the replay on the SEC Network. As a result, I was at the mercy of the Internet and the media to know what happened and who looked good.
As I said entering spring practice, you cannot draw too many conclusions, especially in regards to scheme. Still, here are a few conclusions I made that you can take to the bank.
Brandon Harris is ready. He is light years ahead of where he was last spring and the fall with a summer's worth of work still to improve. Harris should be the starter, end of the story.
I don't care that the stats from the game were about even. Some people said Harris looked "jittery" behind the second team offensive line. I thought he looked great. He was decisive and got out of the pocket as the rush came up the middle. If the rush was off the edge and he ran the way he did, I would be a little concerned. If the rush wasn't really there and he took off early, I would be worried. The rush was real, and up the middle, so he extended plays the only way he could.
Most importantly, he appeared to have command of the offense and was decisive. His talent is obvious. I think all Tiger fans should feel good knowing the starting quarterback should be as talented as any in the league and the backup has a year's worth of experience.
For the record, I am fully aware the coaches will let the "quarterback battle" play out for the sake of competition and "keeping their opponents guessing." That is fine by me, as long as Harris is the starter.
Statistically, Maquedius Bain had a big day as well. As I watched, #90 was very active. But the backup defensive lineman that I saw create the most havoc was Frank Herron. Once again, this is great news for Tiger fans because that means LSU has depth at defensive tackle for the first time in a few years. The defensive line as a group appeared to use their hands more effectively to shed blockers.
The rest of the game confirmed what we already knew. The offensive line will be very good. The running backs, receivers, and tight end positions are deep and talented. The secondary is very good and will get deeper as the freshmen arrive. Kendall Beckwith needs to stay healthy, period.
In summary, I feel very confident LSU will push its way back near the top of the SEC. Some people will say you can't tell that much from spring game, and I completely agree. The fact is, though, we already had a very good idea of this team's capabilities and those wee confirmed.
In baseball, LSU has a huge series with Texas A&M. It is a big series for many reasons, but one crucial reason is that LSU does not play Vanderbilt or Florida this year. Consequently, this weekend is at home and is LSU's best opportunity to show what they can do against the nation's elite.
I feel better about this team than I did a few weeks ago. Coach Manieri and Coach Dunn have a much better feel for the pitching staff. I like the idea of using Poche more than once in a weekend. It has worked before for Mainieri, and Poche has the makeup for that role.
Nevertheless, my guess is this weekend will be won or lost with the bats. I still say Alex Bregman is due to go on a super hot streak. To be clear, I am not criticizing. He has had a great year. I just believe his ability is so great, and his production has not matched how well he is played. Many call it baseball fortune. Let's call it production matching ability and performance.
In closing, the Pelicans probably won't last much longer against the Warriors, but you have to love the character the team showed last week. I really enjoyed Anthony Davis' interview after the Spurs win to clinch the eighth playoff spot. He demonstrated his appreciation for his team and showed humility. Characteristics I love in a superstar.

Please don’t say you’re surprised yet another NFL player will be spending more than half the season on his couch, suspended without pay for ten games because of domestic violence issues! The league has suspended Dallas Cowboys defensive end Greg Hardy, formerly a member of the Carolina Panthers, after they concluded there was as they put it “credible evidence” he roughed up his girlfriend almost a year ago.
Mr. Hardy just became one of “Jerry’s boys” after he signed a one year, large incentive-laden deal. But he plans on appealing the suspension since a North Carolina court has dismissed the case. The court had no other way to find that the case had “no merit” simply because his girlfriend has now refused to cooperate with authorities. Once again the simple truth is she’s been paid to “dummy up” and recant her previous testimony.
But the NFL investigation has concluded the facts in this case are solid and they refuse to let a little money “under the table” keep them from coming to the conclusion he did in fact beat his girlfriend on at least four occasions. NFL investigators were and are capable of proving that Nicole Holder was severely traumatized.
NFL investigators were quoted saying “Ms. Holder sustained a range of injuries, including bruises and scratches on her neck, shoulders, upper chest, back, arms and feet”. Commissioner Roger Goodell said “The use of physical force under the circumstances present here, against a woman substantially smaller than you and in the presence of powerful, military-style assault weapons, constitutes a significant act of violence in violation of the personal conduct policy”.
In “hey Ref’s” world it simply means HE BEAT THE SH*T OUT OF HER!! But he has to be politically correct in his words so we can’t really get on his case this time. I just wonder though if the league hadn’t changed its personal conduct code a couple years ago would this episode even been investigated?
Hardy was on the commissioner’s exempt list last season and wasn’t on Carolina’s active roster, YET WAS PAID HIS $13 MILLION DOLLAR SALARY! He was suspended under the revised statute after the league was getting plenty of heat for the way they handled the Ray Rice circus. So maybe he would’ve gotten away with this whole sorry affair if it hadn’t been for Baltimore being put under the microscope.
It would be easy to sit back and point the finger solely at Greg Hardy but I must also ask this question “Mr. Jones, you own the Cowboys so has your ego gotten to the point where you’ll hire just about anyone in your quest for another Super Bowl Championship”? The only answer to that question is a very loud YES! In Jones’ own statement Wednesday that was released by the Cowboys he admitted they knew about these charges and his (Hardy’s) anticipated suspension PRIOR SIGNING HIM to a multi-million dollar contract.
This whole mess stinks and its league wide that the only thing that matters is wining at all costs. Please Mr. Goodell grow some testis and fine both Jones and his corrupt organization for allowing this player to remain on the payroll. This is a slap in the face to all NFL fans. The league doesn’t need any more owners that’ll do almost anything and allow almost anything to be done by players under contract to them without hesitation and keep them employed.
This one player, Greg Hardy, collected over $13 million dollars last year as the league tried to find a solution. With this one sick situation I can see why this league continues to drown under its own collective incompetency. It’s way past time for the owners to clean house and prove to its fans they are serious about keeping felons from working on Sundays.
Till next week… …
