THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

I am a chicken, yellow belly, scaredy cat! You name it. That is me. When I started writing last week I was going to put Kentucky on upset alert, and I did not do it. Oh well, time to move on.

When I remember the Championship game I will remember the Duke guards, and the game turning on three plays involving Winslow. The first was right after Okafor got his fourth foul, Winslow was clearly out of control and charged into a defender that had established his ground. It should have been the fourth of Winslow, but was not called that way. Block/charge calls are inherently very subjective, though. The second was when Winslow stepped out of bounds, but it was missed. Subsequently, Winslow found Okafor who scored and gave Duke the lead. The third was the replay that showed the ball graze off Okafor, but Duke retained possession.

Before you Duke fans lose your mind, I am not saying Wisconsin would have won the game had those calls been made differently. I am also not saying Duke got all the calls. Before any officials get insulted, I am not criticizing officials. All I am saying is those three plays had a huge impact on the way the game was played the rest of the way, and those three plays are what I will remember from the game.

I give credit to Duke for the shots they hit down the stretch, as those were big time plays. I thought Wisconsin didn't have an answer for Duke switching on the perimeter. The Wisconsin guards got frustrated, and stagnant. The Badger offense turned into an NBA iso post offense, which is not their game. There was one possession where Kaminsky back screened for Dekker. Duke didn't want to switch that type of screen and leave the inside mismatch. The play resulted in a layup. I am sure the Wisconsin coaches will be frustrated when they watch film and see they did not set more big little screens to attack the goal. And their guards did not make enough basket cuts or use screens in an attacking manner.

As for Coach K, my goodness. I am not a Duke fan, but I am a Coach K fan. There has been and will continue to be a great deal of discussion about his legacy. The wins, championships, etc. say a enough, but how about is thought? One of the analysts for the game was Grant Hill. On ESPN, two of the post game analysts were Jay Bilas and Jay Williams. Stanford just won the NIT coached by Johnny Dawkins. Wojo and other Dukies are head coaches and assistants across the country. The current assistants at Duke are Jeff Capel, Chris Collins, and Nate James. All the people I just referenced are former Duke players. I think that says as much for the program and how Coach K mentors his players as anything.

Most people forget to think back to the nineties and remember when Coach K had health issues and had to step a way for a year. Most people don't remember how bad Duke was on the court that year or the real possibility that Coach K would not return. If you split his career into halves, before the year off and since, each half would be one of the greatest coaching careers in college basketball history. But when you put it together?? My goodness! That is all I can say.

Finally, I know the discussion regarding the greatest coaches has reached across different sports this year. It has been the year for the coaching legends. Belichick with the Patriots, Myer with Ohio State, now Coack K with Duke, and of course Geno at UConn. At this rate, I guess you would have to say to look out for the Spurs again this year. Who says there is parity in sports these days? Let the dynasties reign.

HEY REF

By Dennis Dearie

Veteran Louisiana High School Referee

My intention this week was to focus on the upcoming NFL draft and I’ll get to it but I’ve stumbled upon a reality show on “tru tv” entitled KART LIFE. The nuts and bolts of the reality series is kids aged 11 to 15 that race go-carts. Not the type we raced back in the 70’s but these cars are very high ended vehicles costing tens of thousands of dollars.

I had to watch at least three episodes to be sure this show was actually real since many of these so called reality shows are scripted such as “DUCK DYNESTY” that’s filmed in West Monroe. In the late 60’s we moved from New Orleans to West Monroe and I graduated from the only high school on the west side of the Ouachita river at the time; West Monroe H. S.

I still have many friends in West Monroe and when someone finds out I went to school up there I get that same ‘ole too frequent question “are those people really that f’k stupid”? And I’ve “popped” a lot of bubbles when I let them know that most of what makes it on the show is very much scripted. They call it “steered reality” but it’s actually typical stereotyping of people from the South as in-bred, ignorant, Red-Necks.

Back to “Kart Life”, and if you’ve dealt with people that re-live their childhood through their kids this one ranks very high on the list. One particular family has a “stay at home” dad so he can spend all his time working on his boy’s Kart. The wife has a well-paying realtor job and dad is so wrapped up in the “circuit” he can’t hold down any job what so ever.

Many of these families can best be described as unstable since nothing comes before little Johnny’s race. They transport these Karts in the very same style of trailers that are used for Indy 500 cars. Many have multiple sponsors and their very own pit crew with full time “tuners” as they’re called on the show.

But the reason I’m spending so much time to inform everyone about this show is the behavior of many of the parents. The dads are so consumed with their sons winning races that they throw out the rule book and even celebrate when they break those rules so their boys can race.

This last episode (I can’t watch anymore) had the “Super Bowl” of races that involved international teams. The rules state that cars must have a hard-wired starter just like a full grown car and you can’t use an alternate, hand-held starter. Which means each Kart must have a battery and a “start” button. But this one “tuner” couldn’t get the starter to work so the dad had him remove the battery then went over to the truck and got the portable starter.

He says “I know this is illegal but I’ve got to get my son in this race, it means too much”. The boy finished 3rd and after inspecting all the Kart the race officials wanted to know why there was no battery (which made the Kart lighter and illegal). The dad had a story that the starter went out in the pits right as they lined up. He used a static starter to get the motor going and the battery must’ve fallen off during the race.

I was floored when the official “bought” into those excuses and allowed the Kart to earn a third place finish. He did warn the team that they had to have the starter issue fixed before races the next day. After the official left the dad was high-fiving his crew, his wife and his son stating he just couldn’t believe that they’d gotten away with a total breach of the rules.

As the show goes to commercial the father schemes to leave the starter and battery off and not fix the problems. The tuner is told not to work on the problems and “it’ll be a race time decision if we’ll fix it since we got away with it today”! The dad, wife and crew laugh at getting away with a direct violation right in front of their 11 year old son. It’s these types of things where children are shown how to break the rules and winning at all cost is the only way to play.

I’m sorry for not getting to the NFL as I’d hoped but this story needed telling so when we question how and why our kids won’t follow the rules you can just flip on the T. V. and see adults bragging and showing their youngsters, CHEAT IF YOU CAN GET AWAT WITH IT. And poor officials like me that believe in playing fair and by the rules are the ones being run out of the game!!!!

Till next week…
