PRESS RELEASE
THE CENTRAL STORY
(Modified for JonFineProductions.com Newsletter)
As Central’s daily radio show approaches its first anniversary on the air (April 2, 2013), a lot of great things are happening with THE CENTRAL STORY. At the top of the list is that, in the very near future, the weekday show will expand from one to two hours!
Jon Fine Productions has negotiated a deal with WPFC, 1550AM that will allow it to now broadcast Mondays—Fridays, 5:30pm—7:30pm. So, in the coming weeks, Central will have 10 hours of THE CENTRAL STORY each week on the radio!!
The 5 hours of additional programming will not be added all at once. “Looking Forward” with Brockwell Bone will be the first new program to join THE CENTRAL STORY line-up. This show will debut on Wednesday, February 6, at 5:30pm. Fine thinks this will be a great addition to the program. “Brockwell is going to offer a real unique perspective as he and his guests offer keen insights into life for Centralites in the future. He is a real bright guy who has a tremendous interest in the city of Central. I think that will come across in what I think will be a program that really enhances THE CENTRAL STORY.”
Bone owns Bone Marketing and ABC Printing in Central.
THE CENTRAL STORY Producer Jon Fine says he hopes to add a Central Private program to the mix. Fine asserts that once Central Private names its new Athletic Director/Head Football coach, a new show on Central Private could be in the offing.
A program that Fine really hopes to have is one on the city of Central education/school system. This has been, in Fine’s opinion, the one glaring omission in THE CENTRAL STORY lineup at present. Fine says he has offered hosting this program to a real good candidate. If he should decline, Fine says he will hope to hire another worthy host.
Considerations include shows on: A number of Central political shows
Central’s charities/clubs/organizations… a program on upcoming events in Central… a Central call-in show… amongst other possibilities. There is also the chance that a present show or two might expand to a second hour.
Fine encourages ideas from anyone and everyone for prospective shows and/or hosts. He says that THE CENTRAL STORY is looking for Central oriented shows or programs that Central residents might be interested in listening. If anyone has any ideas, they are encouraged to e-mail Fine at Jon@JonFineProductions.com.
Fine did make note a couple of programming changes.— Dave Freneaux and Coach Sid Edwards have chosen to leave THE CENTRAL STORY. This move came in conjunction with Central Football play-by-play moving to another station. Fine said that he “thanked Dave Freneaux and Coach Sid for their contributions to THE CENTRAL STORY Dave has also been of tremendous help with publicizing THE CENTRAL STORY in his newspaper, for which I’m much appreciative. Also, I thank Central HS for giving us the opportunity to broadcast its football games for the last 6 years.”
Steve Johnson will now host a weekly Central oriented sports show, “The Steve Johnson Show”. Johnson is an assistant football coach at Central and has been involved with Central radio shows/broadcasts for close to 10 years, including co-hosting The Sid Edwards Show. Fine was high on the potential of this program, “Steve is one of the most talented people I’ve worked with in 30+ years of broadcasting. The big question is, logistically, can we, organizationally, live up to the lofty goals that we have set for this program. If so, The Steve Johnson Show has the chance of being one of the top high school sports shows in the country… No Hyperbole!”
THE CENTRAL STORY airs, at present, Monday—Friday, 5:30pm—6:30pm, on WPFC, 1550AM and JonFineProductions.com. Programs include: As For Me and My House, with Steve Johnson (Mondays at The Jambalaya Bistro), The Central Business Report, with Matt Price (Tuesdays at The Jambalaya Bistro), Looking Forward with Brockwell Bone (Wednesdays at Zoe’s Pizza Buffet), The Steve Johnson Show, with Steve Johnson (Thursdays at Zoe’s Pizza Buffet) and KandiLand, with Kandi Johnson (Fridays at Romero’s Food Mart—Joor & Lovett location)
As THE CENTRAL STORY enters its 11th month on the air come this Friday, February 1, Fine feels encouraged about the program: “If everything works the way we hope, we will be operational with our 10 hours of weekly programming by the end of March. We have a real good group with Steve Johnson, Kandi Jones and Matt Price. I think listeners will be impressed with Brockwell (Bone) and other additions to our lineup in the coming weeks.”
“Although there’ve been some bumps and bruises along the way, some of them, in retrospect, self-imposed, I feel real good about where we are, right now, with THE CENTRAL STORY and where we are headed.”
“We have made history, I believe, by having the only nightly prime-time 1 hour radio show about a city, to the best of my knowledge, since Marconi invented the radio medium! In the next 6—8 weeks, we hope to make history, again, by, having the only nightly prime-time 2 hour show ever!!!”
Fine was real positive about the sponsors of the show, “It’s been a real grass roots effort, sponsorship-wise. We have had a terrific response from a variety of businesses, some relatively new to Central, who have really embraced our concept. I thank all of the sponsors who make this show possible for the citizens and fans of the city of Central.”
THE WIZARDRY OF OS
Assistant Basketball Coach/Head Swimming Coach at Central High School
In our country, we always want to have a voice. We want a representative to look after our interests and stand up for us when we feel we are being treated unfairly. As a Saints fan, Joe Vitt was my representative at the NFL hearings last fall.
After reading parts of Vitt's testimony that have been released, I finally feel better. Joe Vitt spoke for the team, the city, the players, himself, and he spoke from the heart. Again, as a fan, I couldn't ask for anything more. Especially, growing up in the city and knowing what that organization means to the city and what the people of the city have gone through.
Naturally, the hot topic in high school sports is the football split for state championships. Before I get to that, I want to mention that I am happy with many of the other proposals that passed. It was a good idea to change the 5A baseball format, extend basketball practice, allow baseball a week of evaluation, and a number of other improvements.
Returning to the football split though, I consider myself a very interested observer with the opinion that work still needs to be done. I would have felt that way no matter how the vote turned out. Either system can work well for football with improvements. The problem I have is that football is not the main sport that needs to be fixed concerning the select versus non select schools.
In this state, football is “top dog” and is taken care of at all costs at almost every high school that has the sport (that is a fact, not a complaint). My complaint is that the true split should be in the "minor" sports such as tennis, swimming, golf, etc. Those are the sports where the playing field is so uneven due to facilities and costs.
In conclusion, I am not necessarily in favor of a split. BUT, I have a difficult time understanding how so many voted to split football, but not the sports I listed earlier.
HEY REF
By Dennis Dearie,
Veteran Louisiana High School Referee
All right, the powers here at “Hey Ref” are bowing to the pressure and will include a few words concerning the NFL Title game, aka: The Super Bowl. I know that I’d promised not to add a single word to the millions that’ll be written before, during and after this annual letdown of what is supposed to be a Championship game. But when ASKED and let me emphasize; ASKED, well then who am I to disappoint the masses?
If I may get serious though; this could in all actuality be the most competitive game in more than thirty years! For me the last time a Super Bowl actually did that, be competitive, you’d have to look way back at game number thirteen. Yes, I feel it’s been that long since this game has lived up to the hype and expectations of the fans from both sides of the field.
In game 13 Terry Bradshaw led the Steelers from Pittsburgh to victory with four touchdown passes over a defending champion that oozed character from each of its players and who were also led by a future Hall of Fame QB; Roger Staubach. Without a doubt the man that I feel was the last to show pure professionalism on and off the sidelines; Dallas Head Coach Tom Landry.
Here was a guy that worked the sidelines in a suit and tie. Just as you’d expect your CEO or Chairman of the Board to show up looking like he was dressed straight out of G. Q. magazine so too was Landry. The man had taste, character and was respected by every player in the league. Without trying he gained the utmost respect from each game official, each and every front office person and all the way to the top by each owner. Landry not only gained your respect, he also returned it in the truest fashion and there will never be another like him. I really hate to write that because in today’s game you won’t find a true man of respect as Landry was!
Please allow me just a quick few words about game number 13. This game had it all, leads, comebacks, tough defense, great coaching, players exceeding their abilities and talents. It also had the biggest heart break in the history of these final games. Former St. Louis Cardinal TE Jackie Smith, a 16 year veteran, which Dallas got out of retirement just a few weeks earlier, had the tying touchdown pass slip off his fingers while in the endzone. This would’ve tied the game at 21 apiece and history would definitely have to be rewritten if he’d held onto the ball.
But as we found out there would be no more “miracles” left in Roger the Dodger’s bag this night. In a show of emotions that he rarely showed when a teammate didn’t complete a play Staubach shook his head violently, looked heavenly and asked God “WHY”? Each year I compare this game to the one just completed but still can’t find anything near that could knock it off the top as being the “Best of all time”. I hope that this is the year I can finally put to rest game number 13. It’s a known fact that I’m not superstitious but the more game 13 stays in my consciousness and refuses to exit my memory the more I consider that I might be wrong?????
I’m not a Ray Lewis fan because of all the antics and attention grabbing he exhibits on game days. Now he’s trying to prove himself a preacher. If he were any other player the fact that he’s been using a BANNED SUBSTANCE would generate an immediate ban from the game and a hefty fine. But he is Ray-Ray and he SELLS tickets which will justify the Commissioner’s actions of turning his back or saying the league will need time to investigate to find merit of the complaints of his usage of “Deer Horn” etc., etc., etc., etc.(?)
So, in what little space I’ve left, I’d like to Thank the principals for their tough vote in “splitting” schools up in an attempt to “level the playing field” so to speak when we go public vs. private. Seeing this issue every Friday night on a football field I can truly say the old way wasn’t the way we should’ve been conducting business between the goal lines.
We know for many, many years schools like Evangel and John Curtis would stack the deck and win championship after championship without breaking a sweat. It wasn’t fair to the kids and that’s the ONLY issue that “Hey Ref” is concerned with here. Where private schools rank in enrollment means zero, nada, nothing. It can breakout the ‘ole checkbook and bring in players bigger than the ones Les Miles can dress out.
For nearly 20 plus years I’d listen to the National Federation of High Schools repeatedly say they write rules and regulations to best protect the players. But in the next breath turn their backs on certain schools’ activities while they’re trying to complete a defensive line that averages 6’ 5” and 350lbs. to compete against schools that have fewer than 300 students.
For most schools they coach wining is the only thing, it’s just the private ones that back that up with cash and opportunities. I hope we see better games on the field as a result to all this jumbling districts and classifications. After player safety the only thing left should be the entertainment factor. After all isn’t that why people go to games?
Simply put; The Ray-Ray Factor; RAVENS: 31 NINERS: 19
