THE WIZARDRY OF OS
Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High
It is July, so that means it is time to clean out the mailbag and answer some questions from readers.
Q: Scott, love your column. How do you think the new 30 second shot clock will impact college basketball?
A: Let me answer that with a question. Have you noticed a big difference between women’s college basketball and men’s? The women’s game has had a 30 second shot clock for years and I have never heard anyone make comments about the faster pace of the women’s game.
In my mind, I think changing the time allowed to advance the ball to the frontcourt would make a larger impact on the pace of play. In case nobody has noticed, teams do not press anymore. Rick Pitino is the best example of a coach that used to press full court and play a fast style. Now, his Louisville teams spend a great deal of time in a zone that slows the game down. Someone needs to ask him why he changed his style.
Either way, more teams play a quality zone that takes time to break down than press and force pace of play. I think cutting the time to advance the ball into the frontcourt to 8 seconds would give many teams an incentive to play the game in the full court.
Q: Scott, your article stinks. Why don’t you write about the Women’s World Cup?
A: You are correct reader. I wrote about the Men’s World Cup last year and have left out the women this year. I blame LSU baseball for advancing further in the post season.
Regardless, I have been amazed at how much better the USA women have played since pool play. They have been dominant despite adversity. I look forward to the finals on Sunday.
Q: I am so excited Anthony Davis signed the contract extension. What about you Scott?
A: Unbelievably great news for the city of New Orleans. Davis guarantees the Pelicans will be relevant and in the playoff hunt for the next 6 years. In the current structure, the draft only matters if you can get a superstar at the top of the draft. Otherwise, it is all about attracting free agents. These days the free agents that fill out a roster into a playoff or championship roster want to play with great players.
That’s all I have time for this week. I didn’t completely clear out the mailbag, but we have time… it is July you know (full disclosure: my mailbag is fictitious).
HEY REF
By Dennis Dearie
Veteran Louisiana High School Referee
Since the LHSAA has put “on the back burner” any discussions with its officials on a pay increase for football and the return of money stolen from baseball umpires to at least next week, we at “Hey Ref” have been asked to wait and see before commenting any further. I will honor that request since any further talk at this time will not serve either side of the controversy.
But there is a story from last week that I’m having big problems believing. According to the Tallahassee Democrat the guy who used to portray the Indian chief for Florida State was killed during an argument over a gumbo recipe. The story continues that Caleb Halley who served as Chief Osceola from 2004 – 2007 was in a heated argument with a co-worker at Buddy’s Seafood in Panama City Beach.
They were reportedly not on the same page as to how much spice they were supposed to put in the restaurant’s gumbo. Thompson grabbed a wooden board and Halley then took hold of a small wooden knife so Thompson then took out his own knife and slashed Halley three times in the torso. Halley succumbed to his injuries in the hospital just two days later. Police then arrested Thompson and charged him with manslaughter.
Has our society regressed that far to cheapen life over how much “Toney’s” to put in a recipe? Don’t quote me as saying it was “Tony’s” as the report never mentioned the actual brand of spice but that’s the only brand that came to mind. Are people that unbalanced as to take a life over something so stupid? How do these things happen in a supposed country where we believe life is special and not cheap?
Closer to home LSU has cut ties with Trey Lealaimatafao after his THIRD run in with the law. This latest arrest was his second in Baton Rouge in just one year. And once again this happened in a bar’s parking lot. He’s a redshirt freshman and if anything he should’ve been on his best behavior. But what I just can’t understand is when will Coach Les Miles grow a pair of bullocks and FORBID ALL PLAYERS ON HIS FOOTBALL TEAM FROM ENTERING AND/OR PARKING IN A BAR’S PARKING LOT?
How will the university justify the money and time spent on his recruitment? Where will LSU hide the money spent for coaches to watch him and get him to sign that elusive letter of intent? I mean the costs associated with his moving to Louisiana from Texas and others like him who come to LSU, find booze very easily available and many supporters willing and thinking they’re doing no harm getting these kids all liquored up then run out of town after numerous arrest.
But I really can’t say I’m surprised. Look at the track record of football players since Miles took over and you’ll see a common thread. I won’t write another word about the three others that were recently arrested since its old news. The hammer must fall not only on the kids but the HEAD COACH of LSU’s FOOTBALL TEAM, one Les Miles. LSU isn’t the only school with these problems but they are the ONLY ONE I CARE ABOUT!!
And if the Tiger faithful were actually concerned and cared about these kids and what they do once in Tiger Town then they too would call for Miles to be let go. It’s not this couple instances but a continued thing of Tiger football players getting away with crimes time after time and nobody’s doing anything about it.
But then again, I’ve seen for myself some of the most disgraceful conduct coming from those that buy tickets to sit in the stadium then “Tailgate” in the parking lots around the stadium with no sense of common decency. So, we shouldn’t expect things to get better when most of the faithful are wasted to the point where they can’t walk into the stadium!!
Till next week…
