THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

I thought I had been patient and was starting to see this LSU baseball team turn the corner. Turns out as they started to turn the corner there was another detour.

If Mainieri and staff are able to keep this team in the hunt for the next month, I will be very impressed. LSU is now without its starting shortstop and second baseman, not to mention that both of them were newcomers.

The Friday night starter has an ERA over 6.00. Many Tiger fans are anxious about Hess and want him moved to the closer role. I have my doubts, and am concerned how his pitch count is through the roof by the 4th inning in most starts.

Whether the move is made or not, moving Hess to a relievers role is not going to impact wins and losses. LSU is not blowing leads late in games. Most of LSU’s losses have been because the starting pitching fell apart or the offense was completely shut down. Midweek losses to SLU and ULL were not games where having Hess in the bullpen would have mattered.

LSU’s cleanup hitter was a pitcher for his first three years. While Bain is a great story, Feduccia or Watson are supposed to be hitting cleanup while hitting.330 or higher and banging out 10 home runs.

When the season began I thought LSU would be rounding into form right about now. But the injury bug has hit and a few players expected to hit the ball in gaps and drive in runs have not. As a result, I feel the same as I did a month ago. This team will have to grind out every game for the next month. Hopefully, they can win enough close games to stay in the hunt and then start playing their best baseball in May.

While we wait and hope for LSU baseball to get on track, the NFL draft is creeping closer. Sean Payton was uncharacteristically specific this week about the team’s needs. Pass rusher, tight end, and receiver are the top three priorities. I am pretty sure everyone is onboard with that assessment.

The truth is that none of those players are available in free agency. At least not for a decent price. Those additions will have to come through the draft this year. As I stated a few weeks ago, the type of receiver the Saints need can be attained in the middle to late rounds and even as an undrafted free agent.

This year the draft gives more good news in that there are a number of pass catching tight ends in this draft.

Pass rushers on the other hand are few, far between, and don’t last long in the draft. For these reasons, I fully expect the Saints to trade up in the first round. Last year, the Saints thought they were going to be able to get Reuben Foster and the Niners stole him the pick before the Saints. As it turns out, it worked out for the Saints. Foster was a clearly a player the Saints wanted, but he was not at a need position. The Saints had already picked Lattimore so Payton and Loomis sat back and waited.

This year, the Saints need a pass rusher badly. Payton and Loomis will be sitting in the war room for a long time on draft night. After all these years, all signs point toward the Saints moving up a few picks to get the pass rusher (or tight end) they covet. Until then, I don’t think there are many moves out there for the Saints to make.
