THE WIZARDRY OF OS
Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High
There is a lot to like about the LSU baseball team so far this year.
Offensively, LSU has been very good. They have showed the poise to comeback late in games. The offense has speed and power. The young hitters have been impressive. The top of the lineup has been extremely productive early in games. There is plenty of depth to allow Coach Mainieri to make changes as necessary late in games.
Jaden Hill and Landon Marceaux are the real deal. Todd Peterson looks almost unhittable if he gets ahead and throws strikes. Overall, the pitching staff has been inconsistent though, but pitchers usually take a little longer to settle into the year.
While the pitchers haven’t performed very well, their talent is obvious. The depth is also obvious considering the number of pitchers who have appeared while Hilliard and Gilbert have not been used yet due to injury. As the young pitchers develop and Alan Dunn learns about them, this pitching staff will live up to expectations by April.
Most Tiger fans are understandably concerned about Zack Hess. I take comfort in that he missed a week due to a groin injury and probably wasn’t quite ready to start the opener. I still suspect he will be the type of pitcher everyone expects.
If you are wondering why I haven’t talked more about the LSU basketball team, I have to be honest in that due to conflicts I have not seen a complete game in the last two weeks. As a result, I am hesitant to write much. I am looking forward to the Florida and Tennessee games as I have a clear schedule and am looking forward to both games in the PMAC.
I have had many thoughts about the Anthony Davis situation, but have had plenty of other topics to cover over the last few weeks. As the situation has played itself out I am dumbfounded as to how anyone in the Anthony Davis camp thought it was a good idea to demand a trade.
If the Pels had stayed in the Eastern Conference, they would have made the playoffs almost every year and Dell Demps would still have a job. But, it seemed like every time Demps made a big move, either a trade or a free agent signing, the player got hurt. The list is a long one. Gordon, Anderson, Asik, Pondexter, Cousins, and others missed significant time due to injury while in New Orleans. Still, I understand the decision by Ms. Benson.
What I don’t understand is how Anthony Davis has not fired his agent and anyone that advises him. He cannot make more money than he made for the Pelicans. His image is severely damaged which will hurt his endorsements. How is Anthony Davis better off today than he was a month ago?
I don’t know how Davis or the NBA end up looking good when this situation is settled, but the Pelicans have a good chance to come out ahead. With Anthony Davis, this team could only win one playoff series, so it won’t take much to improve. There are some good pieces on the team and trading Davis will bring in plenty of assets while easing salary cap issue brought on by Davis’ max contract. Since Davis was public about leaving, nobody can question the Pelicans making the trade.
I am not guaranteeing this will all work out for the Pels, but it is not hard to see how they could be better off in the long run. At least, that is what I am telling myself.
