I have intentionally insulated myself from the hyperbole, overreactions, and trolling "takes" on the NBA Finals. If you are like me and prefer the NBA without the daytime soap aspects, then I hope this article interests you as I share some measured reactions to the Finals.
Steph Curry had an amazing regular season and deserves all the accolades he received. He did not play as well in the post season, especially the Finals. His play in the post season does not diminish what he accomplished in the regular season.
Replay my thoughts on Curry and apply them to the Warriors as a team. They settled too much on offense, lacked ball movement and player movement at key times, and were careless with the basketball. None of that dismisses their regular season accomplishment. Every year until someone wins 74 games, this year’s team will be mentioned. You cannot say the same for many NBA champions. I recognize that people will also point out that the Warriors did not win it all this year when they mention the 73 wins. Still, their 73 wins during the regular season were definitely worth it, and is quite an accomplishment.
Kyrie Irving and LeBron James were amazing in games 5-7. Curry and Thompson were amazing in games 5-7 of the Western Conference Finals as well. My conclusion is that it takes three tremendous performances by elite players to come back from 3-1 down in Final series.
About five years ago the NBA realized it wasn't good to have their players yelling obscenities at NBA officials instead of getting back on defense. Thankfully, the NBA put an end to that level of whining. Unfortunately, we have inched back to one level below. After 90% of the calls and non-calls the players are overreacting in disgust as if they have received a rare injustice. Then they look at the replay board to see if their obvious foul occurred in a way that could be noticed. Then they proceed to talk to the official for the next 30 seconds.
Officiating in the NBA is darn near impossible. The game is so fast with so much happening and everyone is putting forth tremendous effort to draw fouls or get away with fouling to make a play. In the NFL, we know there is holding on every play, and a penalty is called when it is egregious or someone is a good enough actor to force a call. But the play clock forces players to move on and prevents a whine fest. The NBA game is better and players are better off when they focus on playing the game instead of constantly influencing the officiating. I think the Warriors got too caught up in officiating and other distractions that they could not control.
My last thought on the NBA season is in regards to putting history into perspective. Many players from the 80s and 90s have shared their thoughts on Golden State, Steph Curry, and the NBA. Those players have dismissed some of the offensive numbers and performances recently while touting the physicality of their era.
I decided to research free throw attempts per game and three point attempts from the NBA Finals from 1980-2016. I will share those thoughts next week…
HEY REF
I’ve heard many of my friends say they are shocked at the goings on in north Louisiana by District Attorney Jerry Jones. He announced that his office will not file charges nor will prosecute two STAR Alabama football players Cam Robinson and Laurence Jones. They were arrested back in May when a Monroe policeman smelled marijuana and proceeded to investigate.
The police officer found the weed, prescription drugs and two guns one which turned out to be stolen. Here’s the full quote D. A. Jones released in trying to explain his reasoning for not filing charges; “They did it, they’ve been successful, I wish them well in their future endeavors and I don’t think this should be a strike against them”.
Is this guy for real? You’ve got two individuals in a public park in possession of illegal drugs, two firearms with one reported as stolen yet those aren’t big enough crime for his office to prosecute. LSU fans need not point fingers at these two Bama players since we’ve seen the lengths that Les Miles and the University have gone through to get players they need to plug holes in the program.
Recent history shows LSU recruited, signed and had a self-confessed sexual offender start at quarterback for two years. LSU also had one of its top running backs arrested for sexual crimes committed while he was still in high school. But his sexual crimes paled in comparison to the utter shocking antics that led to Jeremy Hill’s escape from justice.
On one hand we had a star LSU athlete that was facing the possibility of having his probation revoked and sent to jail. And on the other hand was the safety and well-being of society in general. The safety of the general public was ignored because this player had the ability to bring home a National Championship to Baton Rouge. And we all know that nothing will hinder the chase for any title in south Louisiana. This little adventure shouldn’t have surprised anyone in that the LSU athlete won over the safety of our children and those that happen to have the bad luck of crossing paths with a felon.
I found it odd though as many people weren’t aware that this wasn’t his first run in with the law. He asked for a chance to reverse his bad behavior and as a first offended he got that chance. It wasn’t too long after that case before he had run amuck and again asked for a second chance. He got his break and second chance back in 2011 when he was allowed to plead DOWN his charges from a forced sexual act on a 14 year old freshman when both were enrolled at Baton Rouge’s Redemptorist High School. He and Avery Tate were arrested on Jan. 12, 2011 for forcing a female student to perform oral sex on them in the boy’s locker room.
Many in the legal community agree that a forced sexual act crime would’ve most likely guaranteed jail time. But the powers that be at LOUISIANA’s flagship institution were successful in getting an agreement that allowed him to plead guilty to “misdemeanor carnal knowledge of a juvenile”. So he not only got one second chance with the plea deal but a second second chance when he was put on probation for a crime anyone else but a signed LSU Football Recruit would be spending ten to fifteen years in Angola.
The people in Louisiana won’t be surprised that football players at a major university received preferential treatment. We see it and experience it just about each and every year. The reasoning behind it is simple; football is king and shame on anyone that tries to throw a “monkey” wrench into our number one activity. I believe in giving second chances for a mistake but forcing a young 14 year old girl to perform a sex act on me and a buddy at school isn’t a mistake in any shape or form. But the bottom line is simple, win at any and all costs.
LSU expand Tiger Stadium to nearly 100,000 seats and they’ll do just about anything to fill ‘em. Even if that means recruiting and allowing SEX OFFENDERS to play at LSU because winning is above everything and everybody else. And you can bet your last dollar each and every school will do anything to field a winner. Morals and justice are just stuffed in a bag and thrown in the attic until the football season is over.
My only question in this sad story is just who will have to pay for lawyers to represent these players? Will the taxpayers in Alabama have to “fork” over the cash for legal expenses or is it the Athletic dept. at the school? My guess is the taxpayers will be on the line for attorney fees since Alabama is a “PUBLIC” university. But what we’ve got here is a complete collapse of the legal system that sends out a message we know all too well, if you’re a good enough athlete there are no rules off the field. Nope, too many people act like these kids are some kind of god and nothing should hinder them from getting on the field, arena or diamond.
Till next week…
