THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

I was afraid this was going to happen. No I didn't see 123 yards total offense and a BCS game like shutout. The poor performance on offense though was fairly predictable. All week, I have heard different theories and most seem to settle on a post Alabama depression that left the Tigers flat. I disagree.

A flat performance would not have had a defense holding Arkansas under 300 yards of offense when the Hogs had tons of chances. A flat performance on offense would imply that the offense has been effective recently, which is clearly not the case. Here is my theory.

It starts with improper self evaluation (easier to happen than you think). After playing Ole Miss and Alabama, the top two run defenses in the league, and having success running the ball, the conclusion was that this offense can run on anyone even if the opponent knows what is coming. Coach Miles said it himself after the Ole Miss game. "You might have thought it was a middle-1970s game." The key is the pride in which he made the comment.

Fast forward a week, and most Tiger fans and coaches thought LSU had Alabama beat with the same plan. Circumstances, dropped passes, and a few poor calls cost LSU that game in their mind. So why change anything?

The problem is that those two games were played at home in perfect conditions for this team to give their all mentally and physically. In addition, as I mentioned last week, that philosophy has the smallest of margins for error.

As a result, one bad snap, two injuries on the offensive line, an excited Arkansas team off of a bye, and the offense never had a chance. I disagree with Coach Miles saying the game would have gone differently without the bad snap on the first drive. I disagree with anyone pointing to the inexperience on offense considering the replacements on the offensive line are seniors.

Finally, those pointing to the quarterback need to calm down. Anthony Jennings didn't play any differently than he has all year. The question that must be asked at this point is why Anthony Jennings is splitting first team reps with a second string quarterback that has not played in a month?

Clearly, as I stated last week, I thought LSU was set up to lose on of their last two games. Hopefully, with some extra time to prepare, the coaches can look back with a better perspective at the entire season and find some wrinkles that put some doubt in the minds of Aggie defenders. I humbly suggest The Tigers recall the wonderful success they have enjoyed all year when throwing the ball down field to Fournette.

I also want to go on the record for saying I am impressed by how well the defense continues to play. In comparison, I am equally unimpressed by the continued inability of the Saints defense to end a half without the opponent scoring. Even an opponent who is not trying to score. But I will digress and stay away from that abysmal performance, except to point out it was predictable. The Bengals were terrible against the Browns and their run defense was 31st inn the league. So naturally the Saints ran for under three yards a carry and the Bengals played well on offense.

I don't want this entire article to be a downer, so I close with an attempt to put the LSU game into perspective with a bit of humor by sharing some random thoughts I had toward the end of the LSU game.

Give The Boot the boot.

Maybe if Coach Miles made a formal apology to Are Kansas, they would not get so excited about playing us.

Do they still have a bowl in Shreveport?

It has been so long since LSU has been shutout, surely nobody even remembers that other game.

With all the talk early in the year about Tiger Stadium and the fans, this game is more proof of how much of the significant home field advantage LSU has in Tiger Stadium.

At least this game wasn't Thanksgiving week when my wife's family from Arkansas comes in town.

After 5 carries, Fournette should be fresh for the Aggies.

Did you ever think you would see the day where Sean Payton has a running back with 20 carries a game and Les Miles doesn't get 10 carries for any of his backs?

Many fans should be happy that they haven't seen LSU run the short side option.

You think Jarrett Lee is willing to call Brandon Harris and tell him to hang in there?

HEY REF

By Dennis Dearie

Veteran Louisiana High School Referee

Forget President Obama, Mary Landrieu, Bill Cassidy, The Republican and Democratic parties plus every other member of Congress. What this country and its working people need is to scrap every economic plan put forth by these so called leaders and allow Major League owners to run this country! Seems they are the only ones rewarding hard work and performance on the job for their employees.

I’m speaking of course about those employees that produce something worthwhile about a third of the time. More specific Miami Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria and the contract he offered to Giancarlo Stanton which is reported to be the richest (for a player) in MLB history.

Let’s get to these obscene numbers; 13 years, $325 million, an average of $25 million a year that includes a “no trade” clause and give Stanton the option to jump ship after just six years. To be more to the point he’ll “EARN” a pathetic amount of just a little over $154,000 per game. That is of course if he plays all 162 games. But if he’s hurt then of course his per game amount just goes higher.

With just Stanton’s salary to pay the Marlins will have to sell somewhere in the neighborhood of 75 million chili cheese dogs in just 81 days. I’ve arrived at this number by using “old school math” and “new school economics”. I figure if they can sell each chili cheese dog with a profit of at least $3.00 per unit then subtract the cost to store, cook, package and deliver them then maybe just maybe they’ll be able to afford this ONE player AFTER selling some 75 million chili cheese dogs. That is if the fans are hungry at each and every home game.

If Loria is willing to part with this much cash you’d think Stanton is the type of player that’s Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ted Williams, Hank Arron and Mickey Mantle all rolled into one man. But he’s far from it because the guy just turned the ripe old age of 25 this month. Here’s his numbers from 2014; GP-145, AB-539, H-155, SO-170, HR-37, RBI’s-105 for a whopping average of.288

Stanton may be a good player but after just 4 yes that’s right he’s been in the majors just FOUR years he’s not worth the amount of money he’ll be collecting. In fact I don’t think any player is worth $25 million a year! Yes, I’m very much aware of what an opinion is worth and mine is worth nothing in this case since I won’t be paying the high costs associated with attending any professional sporting event simply because I can no longer afford the constant higher prices from year to year.

That old saying of the rich getting richer, etc. is alive and well when we start talking professional sports. The vast majority of those individuals sitting in the stands are forced to use credit cards to purchase season tickets. Then many have to “mortgage the farm” in order to afford the expense of each game.

In “Hey Ref’s” world we call ‘em like we see ‘em and without a doubt our priorities have flipped-flopped. We’ll pay a guy millions to hit a ball 30% of the time yet close down plants and ship off high paying jobs to overseas countries in the guise of making things more affordable for Americans.

When you’re without a job and have no income then everything is too expensive. Maybe what we should be demanding of those wanting to hold political office is for them to get in step with the owners of professional sports teams. Seems if they can find ways to shell out millions to their selected few then couldn’t they pass along this knowledge to those that continue to promises better jobs and higher wages for the rank and file working people of this country?

Till next week…
