BRIAN MITCHELL, DAN ALEXANDER, MIKE FROM PLAQUEMINE

More legends from the great city of Plaquemine may be created this fall as a slate of St. John HS (Plaquemine) and Plaquemine HS Football games hit the airwaves as a Jon Fine Production on WPFC-1550AM-Baton Rouge and on the Net at JonFineProductions.com

There will be 6 Plaquemine HS and 5 St. John HS regular season games broadcasts. We’ll also be bringing you (knock on wood!) playoff broadcasts following that

When St. John’s games are on the air, we hope to have a preview, quarterly updates and post-game report from that night’s Plaquemine game. And, vice-versa

We’re in the process of putting together our announcer teams. Erin Andrews is Jon’s leading candidate. LOL. If Erin doesn’t come through, we’ll tell you who will in 2 or 3 weeks in this publication

Tentatively, the first broadcast is Friday, September 6, when St. John HS visits Brusly HS. The first Plaquemine HS broadcast will be the following week, Friday, September 13, as Plaquemine HS entertains Brusly HS. Once confirmed, we’ll have the entire broadcasting schedule a few weeks down the line in this newsletter

Thank you to the businesses in Plaquemine for your time and consideration of sponsoring our broadcasts. A portion of the proceeds will benefit both teams’ football programs.

THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach/Head Swimming Coach at Central High School

Before I get to the actual topic of this article, I want to take acknowledge how thankful I am to the LSU baseball team for reaching the College World Series. Every week the Tigers extend their season is one less week of summer articles that I have to scratch and claw to find a topic.

Let’s begin this week, by checking on how the conferences are doing. The SEC had four teams in the Super Regionals with two hosting. LSU won at home while Vanderbilt lost, but Mississippi State made up for that with an upset over Virginia.

The ACC had four teams hosting Super Regionals, and two won while two lost. Head to head with the SEC won a series (State) and the ACC won a series (North Carolina who is on their eighth life). Considering these conferences where considered above the rest of the country, I think both had hoped to have one more team reach the CWS.

The Pac 12 should feel good about having two teams reach the College World Series. Furthermore, Oregon State is my pick to advance to the Championship Series from that side of the bracket. The Beavers pitching appears to be the strongest followed by Louisville.

As for LSU’s side of the bracket, either the Tigers or Bruins will be the benefactor of avoiding the pitcher with the most electric stuff left in the tournament. Before LSU fans bite my head off, I said the most electric stuff, not the best pitcher. NC State’s Carlos Rodon is averaging almost 13 strikeouts per 9 innings. While he struggled for the first half of the season, he is pitching his best in the post season, and will be picked in the top 5 of the MLB draft next year. After watching LSU squeak by Jonathan Gray at home last week, I am just fine with missing Rodon.

North Carolina's pitching is in disarray and Rodon has already pitched a little over 16 innings against the Tar Heels and has given up just three runs with 24 strikeouts.

Whoever LSU plays in game two (winners or losers bracket), I think will be one of the toughest games for LSU. Not because of the opponent, but due to the amount of time between appearances for many of LSU's pitchers. Eades has been very shaky, while Glenn and Bourgeois have not pitched in a while. It is hard to get back in the swing of things in such a pressure filled environment. How those guys handle their first appearances will be huge factors in determining the length of LSU's stay in Omaha.

Overall, I am extremely happy that LSU finally has a chance to play at T. D. Ameritrade Park. I think LSU fans will agree that the first two years of T. D. Ameritrade have been a “soft opening.” This year will be the “Grand Opening” with LSU in the CWS.

HEY REF

I’m suffering from a full blown case of “butterflies” anticipating the Tigers march to their next College World Series title. I’ve had to “sit” on my hands much of the year fearing I’ll jinx the Tiger’s chances of bringing the title back to Baton Rouge and I see no reason to mess with a system that so far seems to be working.

But I’ve got to add my two cents into the debate as to which game is the most important for the Tigers to win. I’ve read and heard that the first game is the most important. And some experts claim for LSU to be successful they must get into the winners bracket that they’ve got to execute both in the field and when running the bases and on and on. All of those statements are dead-on but to be crowned champions the ONLY thing they must do is win the FINAL game. Sounds so very simple and you’re right. Nothing matters between the first and last pitch.

That’s the beauty of America’s game. As long as you’ve still got that final, precious last strike, the game can be won. The perfect example of what I’m trying to say is what a certain player named Warren Morris accomplished. Back in the ’96 championship game against Miami in what I call “THE MOMENT”!

There isn’t a man alive who can say they haven’t fantasied “THE MOMENT”! Every player has had this same dream; the game is on the line, your team is behind by a run so somehow you’ve got to get on base. Somehow YOU and only YOU will be remembered for what happens next. All you want is a chance, a chance of tying the game and moving it into extra innings. It feels as though the weight of the world has been positioned squarely on your shoulders so it’s your game to win or lose.

We’re in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and God has blessed you with a teammate on third base. You’ve trained your entire career for this one chance to come through, be a hero and get that run home. Stepping into the batter’s box a little more pressure is put on your plate as you’re now facing the ace of your opponents’ bullpen. Before you can take a breath he gets two strikes on you and many have started walking to the exits.

History was made that day as Morris sent the ball screaming into the right field seats. The baseball world went wild in the “MOMENT”. I remember Warren rounding the bases pumping his fist, holding up his right hand and signaling the Tigers number one. I hope by reliving this MOMENT I don’t jinx the Tigers.

There’s no telling what will happen this weekend but one thing is certain, we’ve got the best chance at coming home and adding to the championships as we’ve ever had. Our kids are peaking at the right time; we’re getting breaks when we need ‘em. Pitching has solidified, hitting is strong, and defense has come on just at the right time.

The Tigers are hitting on all cylinders BUT and it’s a huge BUT; we still have to go out and EARN the title. We need to not believe the headlines and play as the underdog each and every game. I hope I haven’t jinxed the Tigers, this is OUR YEAR!! Just keep this in mind; we’ve got to win the LAST game!!!

Till next week… …
