THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High School

It would be so much easier to be Cam Newton if the only reason people didn’t respect him was because they were racist. I am sure there are many prejudice people that don’t like Cam Newton. Yet, he constantly provides so many reasons for people not to respect him as a professional.

Let’s begin with his behavior in victory. Cam Newton runs around stadiums swiping down signs in support of the opposition. In defeat, he runs off the field barely acknowledging the other team. In the history of the NFL, have you ever seen another quarterback behave this way? Of course not.

Speaking of firsts, have you ever seen a MVP of the NFL where shoes promoting himself in the Super Bowl? I mean before Super Bowl 50 when Cam Newton did it? Once again, Cam is the first.

Leading up to the Super Bowl, the narrative from the national media is that Cam is simply fun loving. There were many stories discussing how his celebrations and actions simply kept the team loose and were a breath of fresh air for the game. In the 17 victories the Panthers had this year, those points may be hard to argue. Maybe I was wrong to think that taking celebratory pictures with your teammates on the sideline BEFORE the end of the game is disrespectful and unsportsmanlike. I can be open to thinking I am too old fashioned.

Then the Super Bowl ended and I am not longer open to respecting Cam Newton. I cannot respect a person who behaves one way in victory and the complete opposite in defeat. Before someone throws Bill Belichick or someone like that at me, just stop. Belichick and others are rude to the media in victory and defeat. Lord help me, at least Marshawn Lynch was consistently terse with the media. Cam Newton puts himself front and center in victory and leading to the Super Bowl. After losing the Super Bowl, he barely has two words to say? That contrast in behavior is the contrast exhibited of a child.

Finally, a player that celebrates by pretending to rip his shirt off as if he is Superman should be the first one on the ground fighting to recover his own fumble. To be clear and forthright, I didn’t play football, so how do I know what I would have in any of the situations Newton encountered on Sunday. At the same time, I never claimed to be Superman, posed for pictures on a sideline before victory, or promoted any of that type of behavior with any of the athletes I have coached.

HEY REF

First things first; I’ve got to be the happiest “loser” on the planet. Last week I predicted the Carolina Panthers would crush Denver in Super Bowl L. If I were a betting man the only real choice as to where I should place my greenbacks was on Cam and his mean ‘ole Carolina Panthers. Even though Denver has the best overall defense in the league this year I just felt the powerhouse offense Carolina brings to the game would win out.

Well that powerhouse offense stayed at the hotel and never made the trip to the stadium. Denver’s “D” though showed up much to the dismay of Cam Newton and the Panther nation proving once again that offenses win games while defenses win championships.

There were many storylines leading up to this Super Bowl but most of the talk and ink concentrated on whether this would be Peyton’s last game should Denver win. We all know what opinions are like and I’d like to share mine. I feel that if Manning had played one of his best games then he’d come back for one final season. But as we all know Manning played poorly and it’s very evident that there can only be one thing for him to do.

Peyton’s decision has to take a back seat to what I feel is one of the most disgusting displays by any player on this level. Cam Newton has been exposed for what he is, a spoiled little punk kid. Before the game any hint of criticism was met with (what else) the race card! Give me a break, labeling anyone that dared to say something negative against the self-proclaimed Super Man of the NFL as a bigot/racist has got to be the lowest of lows.

How can anyone put the racist label on any fan of the NFL? Let’s talk about the 900 pound gorilla in the room. Facts are facts and if I’m not mistaken 85% of the players in the NFL are BLACK! It’s just absurd and I won’t waste another minute trying to figure that one out.

But what I find disgusting is how Cam Newton handled himself with the game on the line. Specifically I’m referring to his cowardly action late in the fourth quarter. Carolina had the ball, 3rd and 9 with a little over four minutes to go. Denver leads by just 6 points which we all know that if Newton can come up with just one big play and get his Panthers in the endzone he’ll likely be the MVP.

That’s all he needs, one play, something Cam and Carolina have been able to come up with all season long. If you watched the game you’re very much aware that as he dropped back to pass the Bronco’s Von Miller knocked the ball loose. What Newton does next showed he’s only there for himself. Instead of trying to recover his fumble he actually hesitates, takes a step BACK and watches the scramble for the ball which Denver recovered.

I listened to ESPN and their “experts” claim that even if Newton recovered the ball that the game was over and recovering the fumble wouldn’t have had anything to do with the final score. I’m sorry Mr. Experts but here we go again, don’t criticize a BLACK quarterback because you’ll be labeled a racist. Carolina was down just six points with over four minutes to go.

Another example of Newton’s immature punk behavior was on the next series after Denver scored. Cam is scrambling in his endzone and is hit as he lets go of a pass. He looks to the referee and not seeing a flag come out for hitting him he sits up and bangs his fists on the ground. He looked like one of those kids in kindergarten that cry and pout because nobody will play.

Newton isn’t finished with his childish behavior, oh no he’s still gonna shock the universe. To top off the evening, after the game during the interviews Newton walks out because the questions were too much for him since he doesn’t like losing. Who does like to lose? I’m sorry but PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES don’t act this way. Mr. Newton has a lot of growing up to do. He loves to parade around pretending to rip his shirt off as if he were Clark Kent transforming into Superman.

The only other behavior not worthy of being called PROFESSIONAL are all the writers and members of the media that are too afraid to call ‘em like you see ‘em fearing you’ll be called a racist. I won’t hesitate to say Cam Newton acted like a terrible two year old and should be suspended for at least half of next season WITHOUT pay for his behavior and lack of professionalism!!!

Till next week…
