GERARD LANDRY ON SHOW

Denham Springs Mayor Gerard Landry appears on SPORTSGUMBO—Denham Springs this Monday, September 26. Please see information about program in next newsletter item.

I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW THE RAIN IS GONE

This is the song that we have opened up SportsGumbo-Denham Springs with the first 4 days of the program and we will do so on tomorrow (Friday) morning as well. We hope this is reflective of a lot of people’s sentiments who have been hurt by the flood… or at least the song can be a little uplifting to one’s spirits.

A daily sports talk radio program, SPORTSGUMBO—Denham Springs airs Monday—Friday, 7am—8am on Family Radio, 91.9 FM, Baton Rouge. Geared towards the Denham Springs sports fan (but can be listened to by all), our program focuses on Denham Springs sports, LSU, the Saints and topics of local and national interest. The program can be heard on the Net, too, at JonFineProductions.com.

Although we are a sports talk show, the flood has transcended our “normal” format. So, much of our conversation has and will focus on the flood. It is a balance between conveying the latest information on the flood recovery and talking sports. As the weeks ensue, our program will shift more and more towards the intended all-sports program format.

Our guests this week have included:

Monday: PAM BUBUY, Denham Springs Volleyball Coach

Wednesday: DAVID LATONA, DEMCO

THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

I apologize to the “youngins” out there who won’t get these early references, but hang with me.

Bobby Hebert to Michael Haynes, Jim Everett to Flipper Anderson, Joe Montana or Steve Young to anybody at the end of the game. Just a short list that represents Saints fans dark memories for all but one of fifty years of Saints football. I don’t want to short change the Saints, there have been many completely awful seasons where they were not even close enough to blow a game at the end. In some aspects, though, those games and seasons are easier to handle.

So far this season, the Saints have decided to celebrate their 50 year anniversary in classic heartbreak Saints fashion. Derek Carr and Josh Brown have brought back memories of Don Majkowski (1989) and Ray Wersching (all the time).

These games are why I didn’t feel bad in the Super Bowl season that the Saints had lots of good fortune. Only once every 50 years is it meant to be for Saints fans? I just hope I am around for the Super Bowl in 2052.

If you are a passionate Saints fan, you are almost assuredly extra frustrated because you can tell this team is giving their best and have not caught a break.

On the injury front you are doomed if you become the best at your position on the Saints defense. Rankins and Kikaha went down before the season. When Breaux was struggling last year he stayed healthy. Then he became the top corner, ready for a huge year, and he breaks his leg. PJ Williams automatically becomes the top guy, and he goes down. Still, the Saints could easily be 2-0 right now. Of course, sentences like that are what brought about the great “could would shoulda” rant from Jim Mora.

The Saints are showing positive signs. I don’t even want to research the odds of a NFL team losing when they force three turnovers and surrender none. Yet, a blocked field goal for a touchdown is the difference in the game. In week one, Jack Del Rio most certainly did the right thing in going for two. But, if Crabtree was as loyal to New Orleans as Odell Beckham (nice try helping us out with that drop at the end buddy) the Saints would have had the win.

For the most part, I feel like the coaching staff is getting the most out of this team. The defense has room to grow because it is so young. Aaron Glenn is doing an amazing job coaching the secondary.

On offense, you have to be impressed with the offensive line (thank you Seahawks for cutting Jahri Evans). I think it is time to get Michael Thomas more involved and Coby Fleener less involved. Apparently, the Saints don’t have a running back that can keep their balance if touched below the waist. Still, the Saints are a bit limited with basically only one tight end on the roster and no great pass catching threat out the backfield (Cadet has let me down).

I haven’t given up on the season. Mostly, because for now the Saints are at least fun to watch. Which leads me to LSU… not!

I wanted to skip a week in talking about LSU, but that wouldn’t be right. I was very happy to see Etling play well. So far, he is definitely what everyone was saying LSU needed at quarterback to make a run at the college football playoff. Every single expert said LSU was a college playoff team if they could just get decent play at quarterback, and that was Etling this week. So is LSU a college playoff team? Answer that question however you like, but I am going to look at that question from the national perspective and where LSU could possibly fit in the top 4.

Ohio State will walk into the playoff, as will Bama even if they lose one. Louisville needs to beat either Clemson or Houston and they look to be in good shape, though they have a tough road with those games and a conference championship game. Houston will have an argument if they beat Louisville, but I doubt that happens, and their win over Oklahoma is not very impressive anymore. Clemson was a favorite to make it, but looks susceptible and have some tough games ahead. The only team I can see from the west coast would be Stanford. I am not buying Michigan or anyone else at this time. In conclusion, Ohio State, Bama, and Louisville look solid. The fourth spot is up for grabs.

Will LSU improve enough under Etling to get in that mix? Despite the loss to Wisconsin, it appears as the nation and many LSU fans are ready to wipe the slate clean because of the change at quarterback. So, watch LSU on the road this week. Auburn’s season is basically on the line so they should give a great effort. LSU, under Miles, is usually at its most ultra conservative on the road. So is what we saw this week only a home thing or are the Tigers really all in on offense. This week will give us a hint as to whether LSU can be at least make it interesting and whether they will be able to hold up in November.
