THE WIZARDRY OF OS
The headline was pretty significant last Sunday as the top 6 teams in college basketball lost on the same day. All together, 7 of the top 10 lost. What should we take from this historic day? Nothing new.
It is really hard to win conference games on the road as all seven of those teams found out, as if they did not already know. Four of the losses were to other ranked teams, so that was not much of a surprise. One of the other upsets was Texas Tech at TCU. LSU fans know TCU is pretty good and tough to beat at home. Another was Michigan State beating Purdue. A 19-9 Tom Izzo coached team winning at home is not surprising. Colorado beating Arizona would be the biggest upset, but even Colorado is 19-10 with a winning record in conference.
The takeaway from that historic Saturday should once again be that college basketball is a great sport, especially this time of the year. The sport goes to another level with fans back in the stands.
Nine point leads can be wiped out with 3 stops and scores in a row. The matchups of different styles of play and personnel are a huge factor in the outcome of a game. Hot shooting teams can go on a run. Put it all together and we call it March Madness.
This year will be the first real March Madness in THREE YEARS!! That is hard to fathom. I had to double check myself just typing the words.
The conference tournaments from one bid leagues will be back on campus with fans on top of the game as their team fights for the only chance into the Big Dance.
In the bigger conferences, not every team will fight as if they are on the bubble, but the bubble teams will absolutely be laying it all on the line.
Individually, some players who we do not normally see or hear about will emerge and put on a show. Look out for names like Pete Kiss (great name), averaging 25.1 ppg from Bryant. The second leading scorer in the country is 5’9” Darius McGhee from Liberty who averages 24.7 ppg (LSU held him to 22 in November) and shoots a ton of threes. 5’9”, that is my kind of basketball player.
There will certainly be a Louisiana flavor to the Big Dance which always makes it sweeter. LSU’s women will be a 2-3 seed. SLU’s women are just a half game out of first, while Tulane and LA Tech are doing well in their conferences.
LSU’s men will be dancing as well. A hot finish could move them to the area of a 6 seed, while a poor finish could have them around a 11 seed. The top 3 teams in the Southland are UNO, SLU, and Nicholls. Southern is one of the better teams in the SWAC. LA Tech could make a run in their conference tournament as well.
March is here. Let the real madness begin!
