FINE IDEAS

A column claiming Albert Pujols was vastly overrated has been rendered somewhat obsolete.

His numbers with the Cardinals during his first stint (2001-2011) with St Louis were astoundingly great. As in 3 MVPs in his 11 seasons with St Louis, while finishing in the top 5 in MVP voting in 10 of these 11 years. His one “off year’, he was ninth in MVP voting. His batting average was over 300, often well over.300, every season, except in his final season, when he batted.299. He hit over 30 home runs every year.

That was St Louis, part I. It was a much different story after he signed a huge free agent contract with the Angels in 2012. In his 9 full seasons with the Angels (2012-2020), Pujols never finished in the top 10 in MVP voting, never batted over.300 nor even close to it, 5 times batting under.260 in 6 of his 9 years with the Angels. He hit over 30 home runs once.

Last season with the Angels and the Dodgers, his numbers were mediocre.

Back with the Cardinals in 2022, he was a part-time player and continued his decade long slide… … and I was about to ridicule his being called GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) by some… … until Pujols went from Musial (Cardinals First Stanza) to (Dal) Maxville for a decade, plus this season up to the last month… and now back to Musial in this last month of play. He has become a full-time player and his numbers in August are 7 HR, 14 RBI and a.472 batting average as of Monday.

Yes, calling him a GOAT is still on overreach. Howsabout we settle with Lazarus?

Can Pujols, now a spry 42 year old, continue this rejuvenation in his last MLB season? And, will it help propel the Cardinals in the post-season? It will be interesting to see. Cardinals Nation and many Baseball fans will be rooting for him. Count me in this number.

St Louis has been relying on somewhat of a geriatric set this season. Players over 30s, besides Pujols, who have starred are 40 year old Adam Wainwright and 34 year old Paul Goldschmidt. Yadier Molina, another sure-shot Hall of Famer is showing his 40 years old age. So, is it time for someone to come up with a nickname for this lot, perhaps a play on words of the Gashouse Gang? I’m not clever enough to come up with such. The best I have to offer is the St Louis CardinalOLDs. Yes, this doesn’t quite compare to the 1983 Philadelphia Phillies Wheeze Kids take-off on their 1950 Whiz Kids—both pennant winners. Any input from the peanut gallery is welcomed.

Not to denigrate Golf or the WNBA, but I’ve been reading more about them in the last month than I have in my whole life. Literally. No hyperbole. As Brittney Griner remains imprisoned in Russia and the PGA and the LIV tour throw darts at each other, I am paying rapt attention. Controversy sells. At least to this unrefined sports palate. This just in—Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott, both members of the HMS team, are embroiled in a big riff. I guess NASCAR might be added to my list.

Is DeShaun Watson a serial rapist or was he just enjoying the services of members of the Oldest Profession? Or both? Perhaps in some cases, the term massage is a euphemism for prostitution. In other cases, maybe Watson forced himself on others.

Watson maintains his innocence. He has not been charged with a crime. Yet, he is getting psychological help as part of his 11-game suspension and 5 million dollar penalty. I’ve always heard that getting help is not helpful unless you realize you have a problem.

What a contrast between how the NFL has handled Watson and Washington’s owner. It would be a lot more consistent of the NFL if they rendered Dan “The Fan” Snyder as Dan “The Ban(ned) Snyder.

The Latin population is growing exponentially. New Orleans is one of the largest areas of growth in the country. Scott Woodward has been a progressive athletic director. So, LSU cancelling its Football Spanish broadcasts makes no sense.—It is a regressive move, one uncharacteristic of Woodward’s tenure.

So Texas Tech fires its 3rd coach in 2 years, with accusations of harassment enveloping this and the 2 prior situations. Who would have thought that the school that hired Bobby Knight would ever be involved in such a fiasco.

We believe Kenny Pickett is the seventh former college quarterback to be drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round. Ben Roethlisberger, Mark Malone, Terry Bradshaw, Ted Marchibroda and Lenny Dawson were 5 of the others. Who was the sixth? The first person who emails us the correct answer to this question gets a $10 credit at ArrestedDevelopmentMediaGuides, my store on EBay.

Go Jackets!

DENHAM SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL IS BACK ON THE AIR!

The 2022 school year marks the 27th season that Jon Fine (Sports) Productions will have the privilege of producing and calling play-by-play for Denham Springs HS Football radio broadcasts. In 2022, the broadcast slate will include the Jamboree, all 10 regular season Denham games, and every playoff game. Broadcasts can be heard on Family Radio-91.9 FM Baton Rouge. All broadcasts can also be heard on the Internet at JonFineProductions.com (click Listen Live on the Denham Springs Football PBP page). The Jamboree air time is 5:30 pm. Subsequent broadcasts will air at 6:00 pm. The first broadcast is Friday, August 26 when the Jackets visit Walker HS in a Jamboree.

After a one-season sabbatical, Josh Ward returns as the play-by-play announcer of the Jackets. Ward will be joined by Mitch Covington as the color commentator. Producer Jon Fine will contribute to the pre-game, half-time and post-game programming.

“Sport N Center Jackets Warm-Up” will feature an interview with Jackets Football Coach Brett Beard conducted by Josh Ward. Jon Fine will speak with a prominent Denham Springs community and/or sports figure. Ward and Covington will also offer a preview of that night’s game and other pertinent information.

The “A&A Discount Tires Half-Time Report” will include Fine interviewing another Denham Springs personality. In addition, Ward and Covington will provide a recap of the first half and a look ahead at the second half of action.

During the “Ralph Sellers Chevrolet Post-Game Show”, there will be an extensive game recap, final stats and a look ahead.

When Denham Springs picks up a first down, they’ll achieve a Big Mike’s Sports Bar & Grill First Down. When the Jackets score, the scoring drive will be recapped on the Brandy Robertson State Farm Insurance Scoring Drive. The coach Beard interview is being brought to you by SERVPRO of Livingston. When the Jackets have secured a victory, Ward will indicate that the victory is in the bank, brought to you by Bank Plus.

Sport-N-Center owner Stacy Phipps (Baseball) and Big Mike O’Neal (Football) were athletes at Denham Springs HS. Ralph Sellers Chevrolet Parts Manager Jim McChristian, a former Jackets color commentator, says he was an athlete at Denham Springs HS, but we have had a difficult time verifying this claim! lol

Fine expressed that he is especially appreciative of the loyal commercial and name mention sponsors the broadcasts have had on Jon Fine Sports Productions’ Denham Springs HS play-by-play broadcasts throughout the years. Many have been with the broadcasts on a year-in, year-out basis. Fine expressed hope that listeners will have the opportunity to patronize these businesses and let them know they heard about them on DSHS Football radio broadcasts.

Jackets play-by-play announcer Josh Ward, a Denham Springs HS graduate, was a Yellow Jackets assistant basketball coach. He is an executive at Guaranty Broadcasting. Much to the regret of several ladies in the Greater Baton Rouge area and points unknown, he is single.

Mitch Covington, a 3-sport star at Denham Springs HS, would later serve as a Jackets assistant football coach. He is presently the head football coach at Denham Springs Junior High School. He is a graduate of McNeese State, where he played baseball. He is married and has 2 children.

Jon Fine co-hosted and produced daily 2-hour drive-time radio sports-talk programs in the Greater Baton Rouge area for close to 20 years. His programs (first SportsTalk, which changed its name to SportsGumbo), aired, at times, in New Orleans, Lake Charles, Monroe and Alexandria, in addition to the Baton Rouge market. His company, Jon Fine Productions, has produced numerous Denham Springs HS and area HS sports programming on television, radio and internet. Fine presently has an EBay store—ArrestedDevelopmentMediaGuides. He is a native of Valley Stream, New York and a graduate of Penn, where he majored in Marketing. Much to the delight of several ladies in the Greater Baton Rouge area and points unknown, he is single.
