PRESS RELEASE

THE DRU NETTLES SHOW

Ho! Ho! Hol! Ho! Ho! Ho!

This week’s The Dru Nettles Show is worth an extra Ho! Ho! Ho! Christmas may be coming early for Denham Springs HS and area sports fans with the lineup featured this week.

The Dru Nettles Show airs Thursday (6pm-7pm), with a replay on Friday morning (10:30am—11:30am), on Cox 4 Television, Baton Rouge. The program is co-hosted by Denham Springs High School Athletic Director/head football coach Dru Nettles and Jon Fine. It is a Jon Fine Production..

Class 2A state championship football coach J. T. Curtis will appear on the program for a 2-part segment. Curtis’s teams at John Curtis HS have won 25 state championships, including this year’s Superdome victory over Evangel HS. Many polls have ranked the Patriots as the 2012 HS national champions.

With 520 career wins (all at John Curtis), and with J. T. Curtis being in his mid-60’s and in good health, most high school sports analysts feel that he will not only break the all-time high school record. He may shatter this mark, making it a sports record that many feel may never be approached.

With Curtis’ appearance on the program, this will mean that 4 of the 5 Louisiana football state championship coaches will have appeared on The Dru Nettles program in the last 2 weeks. On the 12/13 program, Nettles and Fine interviewed Jay Roth (5A Rummel HS), Jabbar Juluke (4A Karr HS) and Steven Fitzhugh (1A Ouachita Christian HS).

For the second straight week, a coach leading a Louisiana college to a post-season bowl will be on The Dru Nettles Show. On this week’s program, University of Louisiana-Monroe football coach Todd Berry will be interviewed. Leading ULM to an 8-4 record, Berry will bring the Warhawks to the Independence Bowl in Shreveport where they will face Ohio University. (Last week’s show included an interview with University of Louisiana-Lafayette football coach Mark Hudspeth.)

Veteran Sportswriter Al Tircuit of The Livingston Parish News will grace The Dru Nettles Show with his presence. Amongst other things, Tircuit will discuss his Tulane Green Wave making the possible improvement from 2-10 this year to the 2013 National Championship.

Almost as good looking as Dru Nettles and Jon Fine, Denham Springs HS senior Hannah Rovira, the DSHS Homecoming Queen and Senior cheerleader will appear on the program on our Academic Segment. She’ll be joined by a number of fellow Jackets cheerleaders.

The sponsor of the week is Jonathan Rovira, owner of Eastside Recycling. Proving the miracle of genetics, Rovira is Hannah’s father.

SportsClips Santas should provide a nice visual contrast to Nettles and Fine during the show.

This could be a classic program (or, as usual, there’s always the chance that Jon gets fired for the 11th time in his illustrious—or is that ignominious--broadcasting career). Tune in and find out!

THE WIZARDRY OF OS

“If you could play like that, why haven’t you done that all season?” Those were the sentiments of many Saints fans after Sunday’s win over Tampa Bay.

There are many ways of answering that question, but I can’t see how anyone can overlook the fact that it happened as soon as the Saints were out of playoff contention and the bounty punishments were vacated. Their performance over the Buccaneers only confirms my suspicion that the Saints had been playing the whole season with a gorilla on their back that had them playing tight.

All season the Saints have been playing outside their comfort zone. Whether it has been learning a new system, handling musical head coaches, or trying to overcome a 0-4 start, the Saints have been fighting themselves like they were in quicksand all season.

I don’t know how often I have ever quoted myself in one of these articles and I will try not to make it a habit. But, last week I wrote, “Even with the horrendous defensive numbers the Saints are talented enough to have made the playoffs. The troubling aspect of the season is how the Saints have played. The giveaways, the busted assignments on defense and other issues are seemingly correctable because I have seen glimpses of what the team is capable.” This week we saw evidence that the Saints are not far away from being a championship team again.

I still believe the front office needs to concentrate their draft picks around speed on defense. Nevertheless, the difference between 7-9 and 12-4 in the NFL is tiny. For the Saints the difference could come from the following factors.

A few less turnovers could be the result of playing with a lead. An easier schedule because of where they will finish this year. The restoration of the confidence necessary for success in the NFL stemming from the coaching staff being in place with Sean Payton back in charge.

I am confident this is the direction the Saints are headed for next year. Hopefully, they will back me up with strong performances in the next two games.

HEY REF

By Dennis Dearie,

Veteran Louisiana High School Referee

Say what you will about the 2012 Heisman Trophy selection but for the first time in 78 years history was made. This year’s winner of the coveted award, given in recognition as being the best player in all of collegiate football, is Texas A & M quarterback Johnny Manziel. The final vote wasn’t as close as you’d think. Manziel totaled 2,029 points and 474 first place votes.

The second place winner was my favorite to walk away with gold in Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o (1,706 points, and 321 first place votes). Third place with 894 points and 60 first place votes went to USC’s Marqise Lee.

Manziel wasn’t on anyone’s radar until leading the Aggies to victory over the Crimson Tide IN TUSCALOOSA. Second place finisher Manti Te’o was hoping to make some history of his own by being the purely defensive player to win the trophy. But as time went on many writers refuse to vote for someone not involved in advancing the football.

How many times have we heard “Offenses win games, Defenses win titles”? I don’t want to upset those who feel that Notre Dame is always getting the benefit of the doubt but we’ll take the top two trophies, (1) BCS Title and (2) Coach of the year. Any award given to a team is nothing more than a popularity contest but voting for Coach of the Year this year was a no-brainer.

In just his third season leading the Irish, Head Coach Brian Kelly took the 2012 team from not being ranked in any poll to the “Top of the Mountain”. Now the greatest challenge of his coaching career awaits him in Jan. against none other than the Alabama Crimson Tide and “little” Nicky.

The Irish are riding high as they’ve been able to win the “close” ones. His defense has been able to keep almost everyone out of the endzone. Look at the final results; (2) overtime games won, (3) three point wins, (5) games holding the opposition to single digit points and (6) games allowing 10 points or less.

The reason I bring these stats up is the FACT that the most valuable player in the nation played defense on the best team in the nation. But I’m not one of those that like to “blow my own horn”. No, I’ll leave that to all the experts out there. I was disappointed that for once a defensive player that deserved to win the Heisman didn’t.

Oh, well…

Till next week… …
