GREATEST ATHLETE IN DENHAM SPRINGS HISTORY?

Denham Springs HS all-time great Ben McDonald is scheduled to appear as a guest this week on SPORTSGUMBO-Denham Springs. Arguably the greatest all-around athlete in DSHS history, McDonald went onto a fabulous career pitching at LSU, while also a member of the Tigers basketball team one season. The first overall pick in the 1989 major league draft, McDonald had a fine professional career, primarily with the Baltimore Orioles. McDonald was also a pitcher on the 1988 Olympic Gold Medal Baseball team. He is set to make an appearance one morning on the show this upcoming week.

FLOOD INFORMATION

Denham Springs Mayor Gerard Landry appeared on the program earlier this week for an extensive 30 minute interview

Last week, Councilman Scooter Keen graced the show with his presence

This upcoming Thursday, Livingston Parish President Layton Ricks is scheduled to appear on SPORTSGUMBO—Denham Springs

THE ONE PRINCIPAL/PRINCIPLE DSHS ABIDES BY

Denham Springs HS Principal Kelly Jones appears on SPORTSGUMBO—Denham Springs this Wednesday morning

The following night, DSHS plays Live Oak HS in football

Kelly’s wife, Beth, is the principal (and principle?) at Live Oak HS… DSHS classes are being held at Live Oak this year

This has the makings of a memorable interview.

THE OPPOSITION

Head Football coaches representing Denham Springs High School’s upcoming Friday night game have appeared on the program (last week it was McKinley HS’s Ken Hilton. Earlier today, we were joined by St. Michael’s Paul Varnado). This Monday, it will be Live Oak HS’s Brett Beard appearing on SPORTSGUMBO—Denham Springs. We hope to have coaches from each Yellow Jackets foe the week of their upcoming matchup.

DSHS CROSS COUNTRY/FOOTBALL/VOLLEYBALL

DSHS Cross Country coach Sarah Batty and Volleyball coach Pam Dubuy have each been a guest on the program. SPORTSGUMBO—Denham Springs will feature previews and recaps of all Cross Country meets (with Coach Batty) and Volleyball games ( with Coach DuBuy or assistant coach Kevin Dorhauer)

Every Tuesday morning at 7:55am, we’ll talk to a different Cross Country athlete

If it can be worked out logistically, we’ll do the same with DSHS Volleyball as well

We preview and recap each DSHS Football game on the program.

HOLD THAT CHEESESTEAK PLEASE

We offer a national perspective, with a slight Philly flavor, every Wednesday morning on SPORTSGUMBO—Denham Springs as long-time SPORTSGUMBO contributor Michael Bradley and one-time Penn radio colleague Paul Jolovitz rotate weekly on the show

Bradley is a free-lance writer and broadcaster who works with 97.5 The Fanatic, Philadelphia, including an Eagles pre-game show and writes for publications including Sporting News, Athlon Sports, Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook. He is an Adjunct Professor in the Communications Department at Villanova, where he is one semester away from receiving his Masters

Jolovitz once road 6 hours each way in a car with Jon Fine to Hanover, New Hampshire, to announce a Penn – Dartmouth Football game. That trip has had long-term adverse emotional effects on both Jolovitz and Fine!… At present, Jolovitz works for 94 WIP, Philadelphia, both as a host and on an Eagles pre-game show. He also hosts 2 shows on WBCB, 1490 Philadelphia and does some local Philly television work.

THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

What went wrong? Who is going to be LSU’s next football coach? There will be plenty of time for that, and many have shared their thoughts and opinions on the matter. I am choosing to focus on what is happening this week, though.

Obviously not much will change on the defensive side of the ball. I am guessing Ed Orgeron will either have a heavy hand in substituting the defensive lineman or will have a pretty detailed script for Pete Jenkins. I don’t care how experienced Jenkins is, he will need a little time to learn these players and Aranda’s scheme.

Just as obvious, the offense will be very challenging. Many years ago, I watched a Roy Williams (North Carolina’s basketball coach) instructional video. He made the point that in order to play offense at a fast tempo, you have to incorporate that style in every drill. His defensive drills would finish with a quick inbound and pushing the ball up the court.

I use that as an example to point out that it is absolutely impossible for effective drastic changes to the offense this week or even the next few weeks. Nevertheless, I think I have some insight on what to expect, since Coach Ensminger was the head coach at Central High School from 2000-2001, my first two years as a teacher and coach.

I can tell you that Steve Ensminger is a great offensive mind. I can tell you that he loves to throw the football. I can also tell you that he understands the situation he is inheriting and will find ways to make small adjustments that the players can handle while trying to find matchups he can exploit.

I don’t really have inside information. I am simply using what I know from my couple of years working with him and observing. Coach Ensminger has the ability to use motion and formations to get the matchups he wants in the passing game. I think we can expect running backs lined up at receiver and more three wide receiver formations. As he was the tight end coach, I will be very interested to see if he plays DeSean Smith more or if he sticks with Foster Moreau and Colin Jeter. I have a suspicion that Smith will play more.

Coach also does an excellent job of taking advantage of defensive players and schemes that are overly aggressive. As a result, draws, screens, and bootlegs could be more prevalent.

I have no idea if LSU will play faster on offense, but if I had to guess, I would expect to see some up tempo at some point this year. At the same time, don’t expect pure spread principles as he knows the personnel he has, and he will fit the scheme to those players.

One of the biggest changes (one that Cameron may not have been allowed to do) I fully expect is the ability for the quarterback to change the play at the line of scrimmage. If Coach Ensminger expected his high school quarterback to change plays based on defensive alignment, I think he will expect the same from Etling.

Still, these change will take some time. Normally, game week is completely filled with preparing for the opponent. We cannot expect there to be much time for major offensive changes. Still, as I said in the beginning, I suspect there are enough wrinkles already in the offense that will allow for improved production without overloading the players.

One other major challenge will be the actual game management. Having been through this scenario before, Coach Orgeron will have a good plan for handling the new roles. Things like communicating with Ensminger whether the Tigers will go for it on fourth down should they come up short on third down. Teams work through these issues when they have their scrimmages in the fall. This staff will be working through these issues for the first time in an SEC game. The good news is this is a very experienced staff that has been through coaching changes in mid-season.

I refuse to say much about the Saints. Their defensive performance does not warrant my time. I do want to point out, though, that the Saints are showing more signs of being the franchise pre Payton and Loomis. Players that are producing are guaranteed to get hurt (Vaccarro, Snead, Davison, and Armstead this week). Meanwhile, unproductive players stay injury free (Cam Jordan and Byrd).

Also, Louisiana players and ex-Saints are guaranteed to have big games versus the Saints. Louisiana products Bobby Hebert and Michael Haynes single handedly ruined one of the few payoff games I was able to attend growing up. Monday night, it was Debo Jones’ turn.

I had a friend text me after the interception and say, “think of all the draft possibilities.” My response was, “That is even worse because those players are guaranteed to be busts or get hurt.” I guess it only took three weeks for me too fall short of my staying positive about the Saints goal this year. So, let me close this way. The offense still looks good!
