THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High School

So who ran the ball better Saturday night in Tiger Stadium? LSU or Auburn? Jeremy Hill or Tre Mason?

The consensus opinion is that while Mason and Auburn had nice days, they were no match for LSU. Mason ran for 5.1 yards per carry and Auburn ran for 4.1. Meanwhile, Hill averaged a marvelous 7.5 yards per carry and LSU ran for 5.2 yards per carry.

At this point, I am going to attempt to revolutionize football. I propose that football programs and all that cover the sport take a page from baseball’s Moneyball and employ some people with a better understanding of statistics.

In order to make my position clear, I have to make sure everyone reading this article has a middle school understanding of the difference between the average and the median. The average is what everyone knows the best, and always chooses to represent “normal.” The problem is that the average is overly affected by extremes known as outliers. In the Olympics, sports like swimming will throw out the high and low score before taking the average to account for outliers.

The median is found by placing the numbers in order from least to greatest and finding the middle number (just like the median of the road is in the middle). For this reason, the non sports media reports on the housing market using the median price of a house because the housing prices of the super rich would skew the data.

And just to complete the lesson, the mode is the number that occurs the most.

Back to sports, and let’s look at those numbers again. While Jeremy Hill ran for an average of 7.5 yards per carry, his median was 3 yards per carry (mode was also 3). Tre Mason of Auburn averaged 5.1 yards per carry and his median was 4.5 (mode was 4 and 6).

As a team, LSU averaged 3.8 yards per carry on first down, but the median was 3 yards (mode 3). The Auburn Tigers averaged 4.6 yards per carry on first down with a median of 4.5 yards per carry (mode 6).

The fact that Auburn’s average, median, and mode for yards per carry were similar demonstrates the consistency of their rushing attack. Outside of the big plays, Hill and LSU were not as consistently effective rushing the ball. Don’t get me wrong, Hill and LSU played very well.

That being said, in the only other game against a team with comparable talent (TCU), LSU overcame an inconsistent run game by being amazing on third down. Saturday night, LSU was good but not great on third down. As a result, LSU did not sustain many drives and left the door open for Auburn to rally.

What does all this mean heading into this Saturday’s matchup against Georgia? I think it is clear that LSU will have to play considerably better than they did against TCU or Auburn to win the game. I can’t see either defense stopping the other team’s offense.

LSU’s defense has been weak between the tackles against the run, and Georgia is terrific running between tackles. LSU gives up big plays in the passing game which is where Georgia is very effective especially in play action. Georgia’s offense can also wear a defense down, which seems to have happened to LSU each game.

Meanwhile, the Dogs should not be able to slow down LSU as long as the Tigers stay away from penalties from lack of concentration and turnovers. LSU’s best defense may be an offense that sustains drives. Of all years though, this LSU offense has been most effective with quick strikes. Georgia is susceptible to those big plays which means both teams should have plenty of possessions.

As a result, I expect a very high scoring game. Field goals will not be an effective method to winning the game. I expect both teams to finish in the thirties with the winning team scoring in the upper thirties.

I really don’t have a great feel for who will win the game. But since I talked about it at the beginning of the article, I will make this prediction. Whichever team has the better MEDIAN yards per carry will win the game.

HEY REF

“Help me to help you”! This week I want to talk directly to the high school football coaches in the Baton Rouge area. The topic for this week’s discussion is going to be very simple, basic and to the point. To keep the (Bullcorn) to a minimum let me just come out and say that from the very first day I donned a striped shirt and blew a whistle I knew that it was going to take more, much more than a rulebook and a couple of (bullcorn) sessions to become a better official. That was my opinion then and it remains the same today. I’ve worked more than 20 years on the field which included many playoff games and was chosen to work the 1997 title game between John Curtis and Eunice in the Superdome.

During those years I’ve attended numerous camps, clinics and worked some major college scrimmages with a couple semi-pro games sprinkled into the mix. Even with all that work there’s one major thing still missing. That thing I labeled as MAJOR is studying film of the games I’ve worked. I can’t stress it enough to every coach (and official) the importance of getting the game film to those crews that have worked your games. Some officials just despise studying game films and I’ll admit it, it isn’t for everyone but it should and has to be.

Coaches and game officials MUST work together for the overall betterment of the game; hands down that’s a no brainer. Cooperation is essential for without it the game will stagnate. Coaches and officials have to work together in a continuing effort to improve every aspect of the game. This is the main thing that’ll only help in enhancing the game day experience for everyone. Parents, coaches, officials and fans should make a commitment to do the right thing and work together in making the game better for the kids.

When I began working football games in Baton Rouge (1979) whenever I’d ask a coach about getting my hands on a copy of the game, I found many coaches very willing and eager to get a copy of the game to me. But as the years went by and a younger generation of coaches started taking over the reins at many schools I noticed a certain amount of reluctance whenever I asked who should be contacted so I could secure a game tape.

I’ve heard some coaches voice a concern over the film getting into the wrong hands. That answer just made me take a step back because if there’s one thing coaches needn’t worry about whenever I get a tape is that it getting into “the wrong hands”. Every tape I’ve ever had the pleasure of obtaining stays in my library. I use these films to help me locate fouls I’ve missed or gotten correct.

If there’s one thing that’s stayed etched in stone it’s being taught to study and watch what you do wrong during live game action in order to correct those mistakes. You’ve got to study films to be 100% positive you were in the best possible position to cover a play. If you weren’t then the only way possible to correct the problem is to watch then study and “see” what you did or didn’t do in making that certain call.

Without the slightest bit of hesitation I can tell you that I’ve left a field on a Friday night knowing I got the call right only to sit down with the tape and see that I BLEW IT! I’ve also been ripped up one side then down the other by a coach about a call I made in which he told me in no uncertain terms along with a few “bleeps” and the voice you have nightmares about that I stunk and the call was wrong only to be vindicated by the film.

So to close I can only hope and pray some coaches might see themselves in this column and realize one of the biggest and most needed tools is at your fingertips. It’s one that’ll help every crew that comes to “your house” in getting those plays called correctly.

Coaches I’ll make a plea to each and every one of you to get copies your games to that crew by no later than the Monday after your most recent game. I believe 1,000% that this is by far the biggest and most important tool you can give to every official. Don’t just send a copy to the crew if you feel they didn’t get a call correct but do it every week.

If ever there was a time or a way to “Help me to help you” then this is the way. Get copies of your games each and every week to the Refs. It’ll help not only your kids but will help the officials become better and it’s a “Win-Win” for all of us!!!

Till next week…
