GOD BLESS AMERICA.
HAPPY TURKEY DAY
Hope everyone is in the midst of a great Thanksgiving weekend. THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HAS HELPED ME THIS YEAR.
YEAR 25 IN THE BOOKS
A special THANK YOU to the many people who aided, assisted and abetted our Denham Springs HS Football Broadcasts this year
The Denham Springs business community stepped up, as they always do, but this time under extremely dire conditions. YOU’RE THE BEST
Principal Wes Howard, Head FB Coach Bret Beard and his staff were terrific to work with… There are many lunatics who own and run radio stations. I’ve had the privilege of dealing with these folks in my checkered career. It is so refreshing to have the good fortune of working with Pastor Duilio Canossa at Family Radio, 91.9 FM. An honest, kind, thoughtful, truthful person who runs a radio station! I’d have to go back to our early days with Christian Country (Nancy David, Rip Miller) to find a station that approached what we are so blessed to be working with at present
Lamin Figueroa, our engineer and Robert Graves, our de facto statistician/historian were great
Josh Ward and Andy Duckworth were terrific, both on and off the air
Thank you listeners!!!!
A special thank you to anyone/everyone I might have left out… I see great things happening with Coach Beard’s program and we hope to be there to cover this metamorphosis in years to come.
GOD BLESS

THE WIZARDRY OF OS
On this week of Thanksgiving, it seems like it is getting harder to differentiate reality from a mirage.
LSU´s defense played well against Arkansas except for when they got beat on deep passes, and that was often. Were the explosive pass plays more of the same or a mirage because Ricks and Stingley were out? My impression is that the defense is improving. I still think they will give almost 30 points to Texas A&M though.
On offense, LSU was able to eliminate the negative running plays and control the clock. Was that improvement in the running game or a product of Arkansas being without many of their lineman? The lack of explosiveness in the running game is unsettling, and I do not put it all on the offensive line. LSU´s running backs are supposed to be able to make one or two guys miss every once in a while.
I know I have said it before and I will again. To beat A&M, LSU will have to steal possessions. Either with turnovers, fourth down conversions, or through special teams.
Going into the season, we all assumed Jameis Winston would be the starter if Brees went down again. Then Payton made us all look bad and went with Taysom Hill. The offense was given many opportunities against Atlanta and only scored 24 points. Hill looked good though, and the offense played well enough to have scored over 30 points.
I think the reality is that the offense is very talented and deep. The Saints already showed they can withstand losing most of their top receivers. Fortunately, most of the skill players were intact for Hill to be the starter. I am not ready to anoint Hill as the heir apparent to Brees, yet. Nevertheless, the talent surrounding Taysom is there for this offense to keep this team winning for now. And I am glad Winston is around because of Hill´s style of play.
Defensively, the last three weeks the defense has been lights out. Do the Saints really have a top ten defense? I know better than to fall for this trap… but it should not be a trap. That was what was frustrating about the start of the season. The talent is there. The cohesion was not and that is understandable in hindsight.
The Chiefs are a different beast and the Vikings simply have our number. But, the other four on the schedule should have a tough time against this defense.
Overall, we have gotten this far with football season, but are we able to finish? The cancellations have increased. The flaws in the planning are being exposed in the ACC. The whole reality of playing through this pandemic has teetered on a fine line the whole time.
I know people are going to lose their minds if they do not get the ending they believe they were promised. I fall into the trap of that way of thinking too. But, the time of year and Thanksgiving does help remind me that this has been a pretty good fall.
The NBA bubble allowed for a compelling basketball season and playoffs. Baseball pulled off their season and World Series, and we had the best of golf, horse racing, and other sports. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and sometimes the final stretch is the most challenging. In the meantime, let us appreciate what we have. Happy Thanksgiving.
HEY REF
Yes, I know it’s Thanksgiving and I should be writing about those things that I’m Thankful for but that’s just not how “Hey Ref” rocks. I want to hurry up and get to what’s got my panties upset. Without a doubt it is the circus that broke out during the Tampa Bay – Rams game Sunday. I was checking out my options and tried my best to find something worth watching and all of a sudden Frank Sinatra’s voice came rolling out of my TV. It was clear and loud as ‘Ole Blue Eyes was singing “Send in the clowns”.
I was shocked when after a Buccaneers touchdown the players, racing across the field, sat down in a line and began “rowing” ‘da boat. What has become of a business claiming to be a professional sport? I’m still stunned. I thought that I was in an episode of The Twilight Zone but that would be disrespectful to Rod. Just a few years ago I wrote in this column that the NFL had ceased being a sport played by athletes into a sideshow with performers.
I’m sorry, call me old fashion but this thing is so far from being a professional entity anymore and has regressed into something below the Three Stooges. (Forgive me Moe, Larry, Shemp and Curley). I don’t think I can put into words my true feelings concerning just how low the NFL has sunk that my editor and Rabbi would allow me to do. If you’re a fan and you think this is “cool” then enjoy yourself while you can because the end is in sight unless the owners and the commissioner get control of the players and get control very fast.
O. K., I promised my wife I’d keep this week’s words of wisdom to an all-time low so everyone can enjoy Thanksgiving 2020. And that’s what I’ll do. I want to wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving.
Till next week…
