THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

Merry Who Dat Christmas! Happy Buttception! The Saints are back in the playoffs!

With the playoffs a week away, and LSU’s bowl game this weekend, let’s focus on the Tigers.

Naturally, I want LSU to play well and beat Notre Dame, but at this moment I can’t see a win or loss making any difference in the off season. Likely, LSU will win or lose based on the performance of Etling, Chark, Guice, and Williams. Considering, all of those players will be gone next year, the outcome of this game is fairly irrelevant.

Yet, if you are looking for something meaningful to focus your attention while watching the game, here are a few areas of note.

First, maybe LSU will use a third tailback. Of course, Guice and Williams will get 90% of the snaps, but just maybe someone else gets 10% of the snaps. In case they do, watch and see if Edwards-Helaire or Brossette show the ability to be a starting tailback next year.

Second, Chark and Gage have had all the production at wide receiver. Stephen Sullivan has had a few moments. Can Drake Davis or Dee Anderson take advantage of a few opportunities to show they are developing?

Third, the Arden Key era is over. K’Lavon Chaisson looked good against BYU (who didn’t?) and struggled the next few weeks. Once Key was healthy, Chaisson didn’t get many snaps. Chaisson is basically a sophomore now. Will he show that he is ready to be the next great pass rusher at LSU that can also play the run?

Fourth, a similar situation has developed at inside linebacker. Last year Devin White showed in the bowl game that he was ready and White had a fabulous sophomore season. Taylor and Phillips will have the same opportunity this year. I will be watching closely.

Many of these players, Edwards-Helaire, Chaisson, Taylor, Phillips, and the other true freshmen that have played so much this year were not officially part of the program this time last year. With the early signing period, we know for certain 19 names that will be playing for LSU next year.

With a little time off from school, I have been able to absorb the reaction to this class. If you are one of those that are worried, please calm down. Remember, especially with recruiting, it is never as good and never as bad as people think. Let’s look at some of the reaction and I will bring it back to the middle.

It’s never that good. LSU signed the top JUCO defensive end, top JUCO offensive tackle, and top JUCO offensive guard. They are going to start and be great. When has LSU signed a JUCO player that turned out to be All-SEC? 20 year olds are more reliable than 18 year olds, but junior college players usually come with their own baggage. Still, considering the situation LSU was in on the offensive and defensive lines against Miss. State, these players are good news.

It’s never that bad. LSU hasn’t signed a quarterback and it doesn’t look like they will. Narcisse or Brennan will transfer as soon as the other is named a starter, and LSU will not have a quarterback in the class. Disaster. I am sure the coaching staff wants to sign a quarterback, and they might. For argument sake, let’s say they don’t. The door isn’t closed. I think this coaching staff has a much better chance to attract a transfer at a later date to fill in the gap. Especially, since quarterbacks transfer after their first year all the time. Have you heard of Baker Mayfield?

It’s never that bad… running back. How can LSU not have a commitment from a 5 star running back. Unacceptable. So, here is something interesting. Do you know how many 5 star running backs ESPN lists in the 2018 class? Wrong. Zero! Talk about bad timing. LSU needs to replace the Fournette/Guize era and there are no 5 star running backs this year. I guess LSU won’t be able to run the ball next year.

Or, maybe LSU will find another formula. Maybe LSU will continue to use receivers in speed sweeps. Maybe Narcisse plays some next year and helps the running game. Maybe Edwards-Helaire, who has sown flashes of Guice-like ability, gets 10 carries a game. And just maybe, Chris Curry who is ranked as a top ten running back or Harold Joiner who is ranked as a top 10 athlete come in and provide the type of power from the running back position that Tiger fans are accustomed.

This won’t be the last time I will remind you. Stars and recruiting rankings aren’t able to predict which student-athletes will absorb college coaching, go to class, and stay away from trouble. Finally, the biggest weakness of the rankings is their complete lack of accounting for positions of “need.”

Geaux Tigers and Happy New Year.
