GREAT DEPTH
Big Mike O’Neal Jr. did a great job filling in for Dru Nettles on The Dru Nettles Show last Thursday night. Ironically enough, at just about the same time, Scott Osborne was on the radio doing a yeoman’s job sitting in for Steve Johnson on The Central Business & Sports Report (on The Central Story)
Although neither Nettles or Johnson are close to losing their jobs, they should have reason to be nervous! lol
Thank you Big Mike and Scott.
THE CENTRAL STORY
This week’s The Central Sports & Business Report will be broadcast live from Meet The Wildcats Night. Steve Johnson will host the first ½ hour, with Scott Osborne (see Wizardry of Os below) on between 6pm—6:30pm. The program returns to Me’ Pa’s Diner next Thursday, September 5. We hope that this program, from Me’ Pa’s marks the return of Matt Price to the airwaves.
Monday night on The Central Story, it’s Destined to Win, with Rocky Bezet, Pastor, The Rock Church.
The Central Story airs Monday and Thursday nights, 5:30pm—6:30pm, on WPFC, 1550AM, Baton Rouge and on the Net at JonFineProductions.com.
CAJUN JOKE OF THE WEEK AS HEARD ON THE 8/22 THE CENTRAL STORY
Complements of Larry Boudreaux’s website, CousinBoudreaux.com:
Dis happened ‘bout a month ago jus’ outside of Cocodrie, a little town in de bayou country of South Louisiana. While dis might sounds like an Alfred Hitchcock tale, eet's real.
Dis out of state traveler waz on de side of de road, hitchhikin’ on a real dark night in de middle of a thunderstorm. Time passed slowly and no cars went by. It waz rainin’ so hard dat he could hardly see hees hand een front of hees face.
Suddenly he saw a car movin’ slowly, approachin’ and appearin’ ghostlike in de rain. It slowly and silently crept toward heem and stopped.
He wanted a ride real bad and jumped in de car and closed de door; only den did he realize dat dere waz nobody behind de wheel, and no sound of an engine to be heard over de rain.
de car continued to creep slowly forward. De guy waz terrified and too scared to’ink of jumpin’ out and runnin’.
He saw dat de car waz approachin’ a sharp curve and, still too scared to jump out, he started to pray and beggin’ for hees life; he waz sure de ghost car would go off de road and in de bayou and he would surely drown!
But just before de curve a shadowy figure appeared at de driver's window and a hand reached in and turned de steerin’ wheel, guidin’ de car safely around de bend.
Then, just as silently, de hand disappeared through de window and de hitchhiker waz alone again!
Paralyzed with fear, de guy watched de hand reappear every time dey reached a curve. Finally de guy, scared to near death, had all he could take and jumped out of de car and ran to town.
Wet and in shock, he went into a bar and voice quaverin’, ordered two shots of whiskey, den tole everybody about his supernatural experience.
A silence enveloped and everybody got goose bumps when dey realized de guy waz tellin’ de truth (and not just some drunk).
About half an hour later two guys walked into de bar and one says to de other, "Look Boudreaux, ders dat idiot dat rode een our car when we wuz pushin eet in de rain."

THE WIZARDRY OF OS
Assistant Basketball Coach/Head Swimming Coach at Central High School
North Carolina or Oregon. I think most Tiger fans are wondering whether LSU will perform in this year’s neutral game opener as they did against North Carolina or Oregon as the countdown dwindles toward LSU versus TCU.
As a Tiger fan, it would be great for LSU to look like they did against Oregon setting the tone for an undefeated season against a very difficult schedule. Meanwhile, I am leery with the reality that LSU may look more like a team that shows flashes of brilliance in the broader landscape of inconsistency.
The offensive line has only one returning player in the same position as last year. The offense is learning under a new offensive coordinator, and colleges don't get preseason games or jamborees to kick the tires. The defense is replacing the front four. The place kicker is new. It seems unrealistic to expect an "Oregonesque" performance.
College openers are usually saturated with penalties, special teams’ errors, turnovers, and blown assignments. Coaches are trying to discover substitution patterns, and are finding out if summer experiments can be fall solutions. If you remember, Joe Addai was a wide receiver at the beginning of one season.
Performances like LSU had against Oregon two years ago are few and far between against quality opponents in college openers. In my mind, South Carolina is famous for opening the season on Thursday night in a game that everyone gets excited about as the season opener. Then the two teams combine for 5 first half turnovers and the final score is 17-6.
While domination is “the want” of many Tiger fans, we should all be happy with “securing victory.” A victory would buy some time for the Tigers to improve over the course of the season. My suspicion is the 2013 version of LSU football will be much better as the season progresses.
Switching gears to the Saints, I guess the most optimistic view is that the Saints weren’t going to be very good on defense anyway. Consequently, if we were going to lose players due to injury, let’s lose them on defense. I am not totally sure that is the correct view, but is definitely optimistic.
My actual opinion of the Saints defense following the Texans game and considering the injuries is unchanged from last year. Good NFL teams will gain chunks of yards against any defense. Stop worrying about yards surrendered.
As I stated last year and will probably repeat many times this year, success in the NFL is determined by red zone defense and forcing turnovers. Moving the ball between the thirties is almost a given (especially at the end of halves). Not that the game mattered, but the Saints beat the Texans because they forced field goals in the first half while the Saints scored touchdowns. The Saints forced field goals because of a few sacks. Therefore, the most valuable players on the Saints defense are Cam Jordan and anyone else that effectively rushes the passer. That effectiveness should not be counted by sacks, but by consistently collapsing the pocket and hurrying the quarterback.
Finally, one thought on Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M. The controversial autograph sessions took place in January. Manziel and A&M could have self reported all of this a long time ago. So while the NCAA is not perfect (actually pretty messed up), don’t blame them for the bad timing and position A&M is in playing the season without knowing if Manziel will be ruled ineligible at some point.
HEY REF
Just being reported by Fox Sports; a joint statement from the school and the NCAA confirming that quarterback Johnny Manziel will be suspended for the first half of A&M’s game versus Rice. Both released statements to the FACT there is no evidence that last year’s Heisman Trophy winner collected any monies for his autographing football related souvenirs at a recent sport’s show.
It goes on further saying Manziel will talk to his teammates concerning his situation and any lessons he’s learned. OK, I laughed when I read that part since the only real lesson learned here is to be sure YOUR name isn’t on any checks for so called signings. As I wrote in an earlier column; any and all athletes faced with this dilemma in the future should evoke the Cam Newton rule.
The “CM” clause as I like to call it makes it legal to do just about anything you want to do as far as getting paid for services rendered. All one has to be sure of is; make positive there’s no traceable paperwork tied to yourself and have all checks made payable to other family members and not you. It’s the American way, BABY, capitalism at its finest! Of course it won’t take the thieves at NCAA headquarters too long before they re-write guidelines outlawing your family and\or friends from making a quick buck off you.
To those that say he just got a “slap on the wrist” you are correct, I just hope it isn’t the one he’ll use when making the next step into professional football. I feel even this slight slap is too much punishment as these kids need to make a buck while they can. The NCAA has shown they’ll allow any school making a coaching change to strip athletes of their scholarships and kick them out of school.
And if you don’t believe me just go ask the kids that lost it all after Kentucky hired their latest basketball coach, one John Calipari. One of the first things he did after making sure his multi-million dollar check cleared the bank was kick three players off the team and out of school. So why shouldn’t we be happy that an Aggie was smart enough to not only make a few quick bucks but get away with it?
The NCAA says that if “new evidence comes to light that they’ll investigate to the furthest extent of the law” etc. That’s the exact statement they made when Cam and his father were allowed to keep a few hundred thousand dollars. And of course once he was playing professionally and new evidence DID come to light, those same powers at the NCAA just threw their hands up, shrugged their collective shoulders and said “He’s (Cam) no longer enrolled at Auburn so we have no authority to further pursue any wrong doing” or something to that effect. So the whole affair was swept under the rug and we just don’t need to ask anything more of “Newton-Gate”.
To close this week on a positive note just a quick mention that this week starts the 2013 High School football season as jamborees kick off tonight. I do want to say to all the coaches out there that I hope this is your year to end the season in the LOUISIANA SUPERDOME. It’s going to be interesting to see how the three day, nine classification tournament plays out.
For a long time I’ve been saying the LHSAA needed to separate the PRIVATE schools from PUBLIC schools when the playoffs started simply because it wasn’t by a long shot a level playing field in many of the games. I just hope every football fan will go out and support each and every school. The “GAME” of football is surely disappearing in this country and the high school version is one of the last true examples of the game being played today simply for the true enjoyment of playing…
Till next week…
