THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High School

Louisiana football fans should know better. We tried to convince ourselves last year that the Saints could overcome unprecedented penalties and the loss of the best head coach in franchise history. We know how that went.

This summer and through the first 4 weeks we tried to convince ourselves that tradition doesn't graduate. LSU can overcome losing a record 11 underclassmen and 8 defenders to the NFL and remain great defensively. Wrong again.

To be clear, Georgia is very good in offense and I was not surprised at all by what transpired. But, Tiger fans have been excusing the defense each week by saying they "lose concentration" in parts of the game. What they have lost is a ton of playmakers and to this point nobody is ready to fill those roles.

I know the defensive line is taking a lot of heat this week after getting zero sacks and zero quarterback pressures. That lack of production is startling, yet I will offer this observation. This group looks substantially less explosive off the ball since game one and one reason maybe that they have already played a season of snaps is just 5 games. I think they are already worn down. The good news is that Coach Miles has already hinted this week that they will give those guys a little break from time to time.

As I wrote weeks ago, LSU is not the only team in the league with defensive issues. Many are jumping to conclusions this week and believe this shift to more dominant offenses is a here to stay in the SEC. I disagree. Just think how different Georgia, LSU, Alabama, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, and Missouri will look on offense breaking in young first time starting quarterbacks. Offensively, Tiger fans better enjoy this year because we are about to send a quarterback, 2 receivers, and a starting running back to the NFL.

Speaking of LSU’s quarterback, I was very impressed by Mettenberger Saturday. He looked like the best quarterback in college football. Murray’s team won, McCarron and Manziel are great, as is Bridgewater and Boyd. But, none of those guys have had the degree of difficulty that Mett had and still looked that good. Look at the elements in that performance: mediocre running game, pocket collapsing, tight windows, NFL style offense, and the big stage.

On the NFL level, Drew Brees is just as impressive because of how well he is playing despite what is going on around him. The offensive line is playing as poorly as I can remember in the Payton era. The running game is almost extinct (though Robinson gives it some life). Still, Brees is carving up defenses while getting hit more than he has in New Orleans.

Back to LSU, this stretch of games is extremely difficult. My suggestion is that all Tiger fans get settled in their head the fact that the defense will give up points. The Tigers will have to win games on offense. LSU cannot make mistakes like Beckham made Satruday, and they have to produce in the two minute offense. If they do, they can keep winning until they head to Bama. If not… well…

HEY REF

To become the best in your chosen profession you must dedicate yourself to one thing and that one thing is; a lifetime of Constant Continued Improvement (CCI). For anyone with an “itch” to become an official they should take those three little words with them every place they go. The only way to becoming a better official is to never miss a chance to learn something new. One of the very first things that was drilled into my head was that if I didn’t learn at least one new thing each and every time I walked off a field to quit the profession. Simply put the reason is simple; once you cease learning you cease to improve.

Last week I dedicated most of this space hoping to open some coach’s eyes. The reason for me bringing up the subject of the need for coaches to get game films to the officials is because in my opinion there isn’t a better teaching tool for officials, no matter the level or sport, than actual live game action. In the Baton Rouge Association there’s a renewed commitment each of us has made to the teams, schools, coaches and fans.

We’re going to be doing the business of working games completely different than we have in the past. But we need the help of our coaches to give us the greatest tool there is and that is of course game films. I made a request last week for all football coaches to make every effort possible in getting a copy of your game films to the guys in stripes. When coaches and officials work together, officials get better. When officials get better the games get better and they become safer. When the games become safer then it’s the players, fans and parents that benefit from a better and safer product on the field.

I can only go by my own personal experiences when I say that studying films beats a mountain of rulebooks, day in, day out, hands down! Just this past week while studying film from one of our most recent games we noticed that a crew member missed a flagrant helmet to helmet tackle in a local high school contest. It sure wasn’t something we celebrated because we found a blown call.

It wasn’t the only foul missed by our crew, no; I missed a couple of fouls right in front of my nose because I wasn’t looking in the proper place. But what we did was find a way to minimize the chances of a repeat in missing those fouls again. Not going to say we’ll never miss them again because that would be a lie. But what I will say is this; I can almost guarantee that by studying the film we now have a procedure we’ll adopt to help eliminate the chances of repeating mistakes in the way we cover certain plays.

Officials are human and yes we do make mistakes. But there are even times when officials do question other officials because what they see and call makes even those of us that work hard at eliminating mistakes just shake our heads in disbelief. Case in point was this past weekend’s game between San Jose’ State and Minnesota in which this crew made a call that defies any common sense.

Close to the end of the game with just over five and a half minutes to go San Jose’ lines up to kick an on-side kick off. The kicker rolls the ball slowly down the middle of the field and the receiving team recovers the kick. The ball is blown dead and as the kicker goes by a member of the receiving team he’s hit with a wicked forearm (elbow) straight in the mouth. This “shot” was so severe I’m not sure how he wasn’t knocked out.

This was as dirty a hit as I’ve ever seen. The kicker gets up and goes after the guy that just about knocked him into next week. The teams of course start pushing and shoving each other. Order is restored pretty quickly but we’ve got flags flying all over the place. Almost instantly and what had to be the same breath we all agreed that the guy who delivered this very dirty shot will be hit with 15 yards and ejected.

Not a single one of us was prepared to what happened next. To this day I can’t believe the call from this white hat; the player hit with an ejection and a 15 yard personal foul is the guy that’s picking up his teeth at the fifty yard line! I’m not kidding, we’re still in shock, just how in the world can this major college officiating crew get this call wrong? I agree that the player shouldn’t have gone after the receiver. And yes of course he was wrong by retaliating and starting a fight. He has to leave disciplining the offending team and or players to the guys charged with keeping order and control of the game.

But what in the world was this crew thinking by ejecting the guy that needs massive dental work and allowing the player that threw this elbow into another player’s face to continue on playing? If you have an answer to that question then maybe you can get our Congress back to work.

Till next week… …

The Denham Springs Athletic Association (DSAA) promotes and supports Yellow Jacket athletics—all sports, boys and girls—year round. The organization works closely with DSHS Athletic Director Dru Nettles and individual coaches to meet critical, sometimes unforeseen financial needs associated with the local high school athletic program. All this generosity has a price-tag and it’s time to replenish the DSAA bank account.

On Sunday, October 13, the group will host its major fundraiser of the year, the annual DSAA Golf Classic held at the Greystone Golf and Country Club in Denham Springs. Registration begins at 12:00 noon for this four-person scramble affair, with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. The cost is $125 per player and $500 per team which includes lunch before tee time and an awards dinner at 6:30 p.m.

The popular tournament will once again feature the $600 Purple and Gold sponsorship that incorporates team entry, team mulligan package, and team par 3 card/club game. Local businesses can also score some great advertising on the golf course by sponsoring a hole for $100.

The Classic enjoys a reputation for being well run and golfer friendly. DSAA is fortunate to have local sports enthusiast Les O’Neal as its tournament chairman this year. He is a seasoned golfer, having qualified for the Senior PGA Tour in 1996 and won the Louisiana Senior Amateur Championship in 2010. He is well versed in organizing such events and will draw upon his national golfing perspective to make this a quality affair.

O’Neal added, “I urge all my friends and any person who supports athletics at Denham Springs High School to put together a team and participate in a fun day of golf at Greystone Golf and Country Club. This has become a sort of annual reunion where Yellow Jacket fans gather to have a good time.”

DSAA views this tournament as much more than a fundraiser. It’s a community activity through which everyone can demonstrate their pride and support of DSHS athletics. For more information, contact Les O’Neal at (225) 235-6197 or lesoneal@cox.net.
