THE WIZARDRY OF OS
Assistant Basketball Coach/Head Swimming Coach at Central High School
To borrow a line from Fight Club, the first rule in talking about the draw your team has received in the NCAA Tournament is don’t talk about the how good a draw your team received. A Georgetown fan I know was excited about their draw in the NCAA Basketball Tournament until Florida Gulf Coast did their thing. And we all know the history that was made last year when Stony Brook came to town.
Consequently, I want to emphasize that I don’t assume LSU will win any games and all opponents are worthy and capable. Nevertheless, part of the fun at this time of the year is to look at possible matchups and predict what might happen.
Before I look at LSU’s potential opponents on the road to Omaha, I decided to look back at LSU’s 9 losses. The first loss of the season was 9-4 to BYU and another was the last game of the year against Ole Miss 11-9. In the other 7 losses, LSU scored three runs twice, 2 runs twice, 1 run twice, and was shutout once.
My point is that LSU is very difficult to beat if they score more than three runs. So when I am looking at potential opponents I am wondering who can keep LSU from scoring more than three runs?
In the Baton Rouge Regional, LSU should be able to score four or more runs on every opponent. The main concern would be ULL, since their lineup is most likely to be able to win a high scoring game. I will be a little concerned if LSU plays ULL on Sunday and is LSU is not 2-0 after the first two games since Eades and Nola will be used up at that point.
I like Coach Mainieri's thinking in having Eades and Nola pitch the first two games. I really appreciate the fact that Coach Mainieri always explains his decision making in full detail. As a result, one might not always agree, but I am assured his decisions are detailed and well thought out.
As for the Super Regional, I think Oklahoma is the most difficult potential opponent because of the best two out of three format. The Sooners have two aces and one of them, Gray, will be drafted in the top 4. As we know from last year, you must be careful what you wish for, but I am sure I am not wishing for Oklahoma to win the Virginia Tech Regional.
As I said in the beginning, there is no telling who LSU will face, and in the post season crazy stuff happens. No matter the opponent, I am surely hoping that Bregman, Katz, and Rhymes get hot again. If that happens I think LSU is headed to Omaha in two weeks for sure.
HEY REF
Only in a Hollywood movie. That was my initial reaction to the Tiger’s victory over Vanderbilt from this year’s SEC baseball tournament. Games such as this don’t exist in the real world or do they? Only a true diehard baseball fan could’ve come up with all the twists and turns these two teams displayed. I’m not about to try and add to the thousands of words and cliché’s that have already been printed.
I feel it would be a disservice for me to even attempt it. So with that said I’d like to get down to some very, very important business. Yes, I’m talking about the upcoming football season. No, I’m not going to talk X’s and O’s. But rather to the guys that’ll be charged with enforcing the rules; the REFS.
I’m going to address the high school officials here in Baton Rouge. The 2013 season will begin with a new commitment to excellence. We will start the year off with a new President and Assignment Secretary. To the coaches in the state capital I can guarantee you this, our new Assignment secretary; John Langlois is bringing with him some very much needed attitude adjustment.
He brings a great mix of “old” school hustle and knowledge of the rules as you’d want the officials to possess and the ability to use common sense in their enforcement of fouls. By now every school and its staff has been visited as we begin a new season of cooperation between coaches and the Baton Rouge Association.
This writer had the opportunity to work on the field with John when he began his high school career. We came up at about the same time, learning the “ropes” from some of the best officials to ever wear the striped shirts. John was a natural; he quickly rose up the ranks and now works in the SEC.
I know John will do what is best for the high schools in this area. But he won’t be able to make any type of a difference without the commitment from all his officials and the coaches in Baton Rouge no matter the extent of their own careers. John has hit the ground running, instilling an attitude that must be accepted by each official.
I expect my fellow officials to do their part in restoring the Baton Rouge association as the best in the state. We mustn’t wait for the changes to occur rather we must embrace them and run with a new pride that will show on Friday night.
Till next week… …
