WIZARDRY OF OS

By Scott Osborne

I really have no idea how many games LSU and the Saints will win this year. I admit it, I am gun shy. Especially as a Tiger fan. Shouldn't all of us be holding our breaths?

The last few years have shown us how everything can seemingly be in place and a mystery injury to the quarterback can completely derail a season for LSU and massive injuries crush the hopes of the Who Dats.

Focusing on LSU, let's all admit that everything I am about to write is meaningless if Sam Leavitt does not play like the four million dollar dude. With that out the way, I am going to go ahead and state both teams will go as far as the defensive lines can take them.

LSU, on offense, will be salty. The quarterback is a dual threat. The offensive line, receivers, and running backs consist of players that have played well at this level. It doesn't look like any are Justin Jeffersons, Malik Nabors, or any of the first round guys LSU has had recently, but they are experienced and the wild card is the Lane Kiffin and Charlie Weis factor.

The question I keep asking myself is how would the country feel about going up against this offense if Lane Kiffin stayed at Ole Miss and all these players were at Ole Miss? I think everyone would be expecting this group to put up huge numbers. I think that it is fair to expect, keeping in mind that Leavitt, Weis, and Kiffin have to live up to their lofty expectations.

Defensively, LSU is as good at linebacker and they have been in a while. Because of injuries last year, there is depth to go with two starting linebackers that have been at the top of the league.

The defensive ends and defensive backs are a combination of highly touted players who have proven themselves and highly touted players who have not. The safe route is to expect them to have highs and lows.

The position that should have every Tiger fan holding their breath is defensive tackle. Since when do true freshmen defensive lineman step in and play well from day one? LSU has had many highly touted defensive lineman play well after a year or two and many others never figure out how to use their athleticism. Almost nobody figures it out from the jump.

My guess is these guys will struggle early in the year and improve as the year goes along, but this is a position that holds LSU back. If LSU had found a Jordan Seaton type (future first round pick who is a veteran) at defensive tackle, I would predict 10-2. But they didn't, so I am thinking 9-3 or 8-4. I'm feeling good, so I'll say 9-3 is the final record and LSU does not make the CFP.

The similarities between the Tigers and Saints are pretty crazy. Both teams appear to have the QB needed. The offensive line for the Saints should be as good as it has been in years, if they stay healthy. The position players are good with the potential to be real good, though injury is a real concern. See Jordan Tyson, Alvin Kamara, and other guys with histories of injuries. Still, the offense should be good.

Defensively, I like what the Saints have done at linebacker and defensive end. The safeties are good and the corners are unproven. If the Saints have injuries pile up at corner, they are in trouble, though.

The best teams in the NFL have dudes on the defensive line. The Saints have already lost two players for the year and are now counting on a rookie that was hurt last year and a rookie this year. If Broughton and Miller turn out to be dudes, then the Saints have something cookin. But what are the odds? Not very good. Still, I am feeling good, and Joe Burrow hasn't objected to the use of the number 9, so I am going with 9 wins for the Saints. But, I think the Bucs find a way to get to 10-7 or win a tiebreaker and the Saints do not make the playoffs.

Good, but not great, and a reason to watch all year long. I am back to my early fandom when that was all we could expect and I'll be pleasantly surprised if something better happens.
