THE WIZARDRY OF OS
Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High School
LSU lost last Saturday’s game to Alabama in January 2012 and January 2013. January 2012 is when Landon Collins chose Bama over LSU. January 2013 is when Kevin Minter chose to leave LSU for the NFL while CJ Mosley chose to stay at Alabama.
Reverse those three decisions and then play last Saturday's game. With Landon Collins in LSU's secondary, Alabama's freshman tight end is not able to run 40 yards after the catch for a touchdown. On a side note, it is pretty frustrating to watch Bama's freshman tight end make a big play like that knowing that LSU has a freshman tight end, DeSean Smith, with the same skill set that doesn't play. Frustrating because he played a lot in the season opener and has not developed to play significant snaps since. Back to Landon Collins, though. Put him in LSU's secondary and the Tigers have faster run support from a safety that can make a solo tackle on Jeremy Hill in open space for a two yard rather than miss in open space.
At middle linebacker, Alabama had the most effective player on the field Saturday in Mosley. He calls the defenses, beats blocks to make plays against the run and is excellent in pass coverage (except for attempted interceptions 20 yards downfield). He is the surest tackler I have seen at linebacker, since
Kevin Minter. To be kind, I won't go into the details of the poor play from LSU's middle linebackers. Instead, I'll simply state that the difference between having Minter and not is the difference between having Drew Brees at quarterback and Aaron Brooks. On another side note, I remember the LSU coaches saying they would move Lamin Barrow to middle linebacker if needed. I am amazed that they don't believe he is needed when LSU gives up 180 yards a game on the ground in the SEC. Most of those yards are between the guards.
I know some people will say I have over simplified the discrepancy. They will say LSU is more than a few players away. I think those people under value the impact of a Mosley or Minter. Think back to the Colts when they counted on Bob Sanders to lead their defense. Just think back to the Florida game last year when Minter went out for a few drives. Look at the Cowboy’s defense Sunday night after losing Sean Lee. Losing one player at a position like middle linebacker can make a huge difference. Obviously, giving away at least 17 points in the first half through turnovers and a penalty to extend a drive didn't help either. LSU has committed turnovers that have taken points off the board or set up the opponent with easy points in every game starting with TCU. Those turnovers that lead to scores and penalties to extend opponents drives have been major factors in all three Tiger losses. For all its weaknesses, LSU would be a one loss team if it didn’t suffer from so many self-inflicted wounds.
As the reality of this year becomes clearer to Tiger fans, the question all fans want to know is if this year is the way it is going to be for a while? I don't think that question can be answered till January and February when juniors make draft decisions and high school seniors make college decisions.
PS. I had these thoughts before I heard local media (such as Charles Hanigriff) make similar points. What can I say… great minds think alike. Mine just don’t get printed until later.
HEY REF
Veteran Louisiana HS Football Official
“He’s being mean to me”, “He’s picking on me”, “He called me a bad name”, “Stop it”, “Waaaaaaaa, I’m gonna tell your momma”. Sounds like things you’d hear at a pre-school or day care center, yes but surely not in an NFL locker-room. But after you wipe away all the liberal B. S. and those trying to make the situation going on with the Miami Dolphins either a racial or bullying affair what do you wind up with?
Simple; you wind up with the very same thing that’s been going on in every male dominated sport team’s locker-room. Speaking from firsthand knowledge and not that of an educated, modern day journalist (trying to sell newspapers and/or magazines) boyz will be boyz! Bleeding-heart liberals are doing their best to drum up sympathy for a 6’4” mountain of a MAN named Jonathan Martin.
I played Jr. and Sr. High football at West Monroe back in the early 70’s. We’d just moved there from New Orleans after I finished 6th grade at Sts. Peter and Paul on Burgundy (Bah-Gundy) St. For some unknown reasons I was picked on because the other players said I had a Nawlins accent and they continued to pick at me for this so called accent until I ( graduated in ’74). To this day when I return those red-necks swear I still sound like a city-boy. Another reason for the continued harassment was I’d come from the Big City and these country hicks would say they “don’t like city slickers”.
But after I’d thrown a Bastrop runner for a ten yard loss or opened a huge hole for a running back they all, every one of them grabbed, hugged and slapped me on the buttocks for a job well done. They accepted me as a teammate and as one of their own. Because after all the “insults” they’d throw my way, yes; I threw back at them too, we were teammates, fighting for the same thing; VICTORY over a common opponent. Family is the same way, I can call my brother an idiot but no one else can.
Just about every person that’s played a team sport has been given a nickname. I’ve had more than one and to this very day over 75% of the officials I work with on a Friday night calling high school football in the Baton Rouge area only know me by one of those nicknames. This past season a ten year official was talking about something I’d said at a meeting and gave his honest opinion of what he thought of my idea (and it was very positive, I must say) and when a member of our crew told him who Jose’ was and that he was looking right at me that official admitted he didn’t know me by any other name.
Let me try and explain further in bringing up a name of a very famous coach, Vince Lombardi. Unless you’ve been living under a very heavy rock then you’ll know the name and the man. There’s just no way in hell he and coaches like him have ever stood over a 300lb. defensive lineman and said “Would you please try a little harder Mr. Smith”? “We could really use your best effort in getting to the opposition’s quarterback before he’s able to throw a touchdown pass and possibly costing us the contest”.
It NEVER happened and it continues to this very hour on a football field. Guys will always do their best to “break” a teammate in practice in the hopes of getting him as ready as possible for the upcoming game. This NEW WORLD ORDER we now live in where you’ve got to be politically correct and not upset someone by using bad or harsh words is ruining our country.
There’s a place for everything and I admit that but what goes on in a locker room between teammates and what goes on at a public restaurant are two completely different things. This whole instance between Martin and Incognito smells like one of those car crash attorney’s commercials. And when we look close at this mess it appears some low class, momma’s baby is cooking up a huge lawsuit against the NFL because they can milk the industry for millions.
I hear the phrase “Time to MAN-UP” all the time. Being a man is standing up for yourself and Mr. Martin, you’re at least 6”4” tall and weigh in excess of 300lbs. so don’t tell me your feelings were being hurt or someone was picking on you because nobody likes a crybaby or a tattle tale. If you don’t like the industry you’re in GET OUT but please stop telling everyone your feelings are being hurt by a bad man that called you a bad name or left a bad word on your answering machine.
If the words used were meant to offend you six months ago I’d think you’d gotten things straightened out by now. It’s what teammates do and have been doing since the first time more than two players played on the same team. MAN-UP and either be a part of the team or go play house!
Till next week… …
