So many weeks in sports have things happen that can be explained, but then there are other weeks where you just have to scratch your head. Of course, those are some of the things that make sports so fascinating.
Starting with the explainable, the Saints made me look bad. I thought they would end up with a bunch of offensive players in the draft, and that is not what happened. Nevertheless, I think they did well.
I am excited to see how Sean Payton will use Cooks because I think Cooks will play a new role, which I think is important for this offense. I mentioned a few times last year that opponents seem to have caught on to certain tendencies over the years. So while many people are thinking Cooks will fill a Sproles/Bush role, I am hoping that he will bring a new dimension to the offense that will break those tendencies. In the Payton era, the Saints haven't had a receiver make yards after the catch.
As for Jean-Baptiste, I certainly hope the Richard Sherman comparisons turn out favorably, but that does not seem fair to either player. While their measurables are similar, Sherman's effectiveness is increased by his study of the game, his mental toughness, and the quality of the players around him. The good news is Jean-Baptiste is surrounded by talented corners and safeties as well.
Now for all the head scratchers of the week. I am baffled by the Sunseri pick like everyone else. There is one thought I can't get out of my head. I find it hard to believe that he would not have been available in round 7 or as an undrafted free agent.
Like most Saints fans, I am hoping the Saints hit the undrafted free agent jack pot. Last year, most people thought Chase Thomas, Kevin Reddick, and Khiry Robinson were steals. They were right on 2 of the 3. This year Brandon Coleman, Tim Flanders, and Matt Armstrong are creating buzz. From watching Coleman's highlights, he looks like Colston as a rookie, and the fact he didn’t get drafted is the real head scratcher. I can't wait to hear the story on how he went undrafted because there has to be one.
Moving to LSU baseball, I can't ever remember a player like Cody Glenn. He could have performed a little below his ability from last year and still been the third starter this year. In the last year, he has gone from pitching for LSU in the opening game of the SEC Tournament and game 2 of the CWS to not being one of the 12 best pitchers on the staff and transferring from LSU. Again, there has to be a story there as well.
Meanwhile, the LSU baseball team cannot hit or score runs and the bullpen is breaking down. That is until Tuesday. 27 runs in 6 innings??!!!! A combined no hitter?! Wow! They will probably score a total of 6 runs at Auburn (I hope I am wrong), but Tuesday’s performance is still incredible.
Speaking of interesting stories, Anthony Hickey is leaving LSU. A three year starter does not leave a basketball program without a few untold stories. Those close to the program aren’t scratching their heads, but the situation is definitely out of the ordinary.
The other head scratchers come from the NBA. What is going on in these playoffs? The Pacers get outrebounded by almost 40 on their home court in a close out game? Chris Paul turns the ball over twice at the end of the game?
Anyone who has watched the NBA knows two things. One, a 20 point lead in the first half means nothing (blame the shot clock for that). Two, a double digit lead with less than 2 minutes to go means you can turn the game off. This week it seems like every other game has a team coming back late in the fourth quarter. Comebacks like that are not possible without one team making mistakes like turnovers, defensive breakdowns, or poor decisions. These are the best teams in the NBA and they are not taking care of the ball at the end of the game. That is amazing to me… and after this week, my scalp needs a break.
HEY REF
Even though the NFL just completed its annual draft and the NBA is in the midst of their playoffs to me there are just two big stories in the sports world this week. Anyone remember a cliché’ that ends something like “open your mouth and remove all doubt”? I only mention this because as I watched and tried to make sense of L. A. Clipper’s owner Donald Sterling’s so called apology those words kept ringing in my ears.
I do have to give Mr. Sterling credit though for facing off with CNN’s Anderson Cooper in what was nothing more than a poor excuse of an up close and personal interview. Sterling’s message/apology came across as insincere and just some sort of made up gibberish as the owner pleaded with the public to forgive him. He stated that after some 35 years of undying service to the league and his community that we all should forgive this transgression as it was his first and only mistake. But, please someone doesn’t get over the age of 80 years without making a few mistakes and I am one that doesn’t in the slightest believe this was or is a onetime thing.
Mr. Sterling’s attempt to come off as the wronged party is comical at best. I refuse to get on the bandwagon though and be a party to those wishing to crucify him. My take on this scandal is very simple and best described as he got caught with his finger in the cookie jar.
In this day and time as I’ve written many times before you must be very careful of the words you choose, how you use them and who can hear them. He chose the wrong words and said them to the wrong person who was also wrong for recording them and then passing them along to outside parties. I do feel this girl was going to bribe him at first but someone got to her and the recording was then released to the media. So, at the end of the day Mr. Sterling it’s time to “MAN-UP” and take your punishment.
If he’d perhaps stayed with the game plan to convince the public he’d spoken unwisely and then asked for forgiveness for everything said then maybe, just maybe he’d have been forgiven and had another chance to show his sincerity. Who knows, the media might have shown it too has a heart and felt he was being truthful and sincere then would allowed him to retire a successful, caring and respected businessman. But then he “dumped” on Magic Johnson and simply shoved both of his feet back into his mouth so now it’s game over for him.
Now for the second big story this week which has to be the show put on by one Michael Sam. The story isn’t about his being drafted in the seventh round of the draft by the Rams nor him being the first openly HOMOSEXUAL player in the NFL but those that let it be known they were offended, outraged and/or disgusted by the live cameras of ESPN and the pictures being beamed to every set tuned into their network.
ESPN placed live cameras in his residence to capture his first reactions after getting “the call” and would in fact continue his dream of playing professional football. As the news was being received Sam turned to his lover/boyfriend and embraced him then they shared several passionate kisses. Afterwards they continued to feed each other cake as if part of a marriage reception. Sam playfully went so far as to smear cake across his lover/boyfriend’s face.
Several present day NFL players posted their disgust at what was being televised to America and it possibly being seen by young children. My stance here is not objecting to what Mr. Sam was doing but to those that shared their outrage with the public. How can two men sucking face on live TV disgust anyone? How can two people showing their love for one another disgust some people?
Let me ask those that are disgusted by their public affection this simple question “If you find two men publically displaying their love and affection towards each other disgusting then how/what do you feel about things they do with/to each other behind closed doors”? Does that also disgust you? You can’t have it both ways. If you accept HOMOSEXUAL behavior then you accept that behavior totally and unconditionally both privately and publically.
If we loved each other more instead of hating each other there would be less killing going on!
Till next week…
