THE WIZADRY OF OZ
Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High School
I need to apologize to all Saints fans. I didn’t mean to do it. The last thing I wanted to do was put the kibosh on the Saints and Drew Brees. I had a good fantasy draft going and the top QBs were gone. I figured the Saints would have to throw a bunch with a porous defense, and Drew always throws for a ton of yards.
Full disclosure, I also picked Tom Brady in the middle rounds, but I figured I would use Brady for trade bait. Instead, I doomed myself and brought bad voodoo to my team. It started with week one. I figured it was the Arizona defense and not that fact I started Drew. Brady went off, for the record.
I was going to start Brady in week 2, but I drank the Bills defense Kool-Aid and figured the Saints offense would be better at home. Wrong! And to make things worse, I was punished by Drew getting hurt and now missing the first game of his NFL career due to injury. Actually his first game since high school, and all because of my fantasy greed.
I promise to try to rectify the situation. My plan is to sit Drew on my fantasy bench when he returns. That should automatically make him good for 370 yards and four touchdowns. If that somehow doesn’t work, I will trade him for anything, which should definitely do the trick.
Seriously, the Saints still won’t be great this year, but hopefully things will get better. I know I might be the lone voice in the crowd, but I find all the talk of moving on from this era and hoping the Saints get a super high draft pick just silly. These people can’t really be Saints fans. True Saints fans would know that looking forward to a high draft pick makes as much sense as looking forward to LSU developing a great passing offense. Even if the LSU passing game develops to supreme efficiency, LSU is not going to use it like many other teams. Likewise, even if the Saints get a top 5 pick, a true Saints fan knows to expect Tony Mandarich instead of Julio Jones.
To put it another way, my best friend I have known since Kindergarten said he takes one pleasure in the Saints season so far with all the injuries, Gallette mess, and such. It is that his boys are now learning what it means to be a true Saints fans. It isn’t all about always winning at home in primetime and going to the playoffs every year. Ha.
I don’t have much to say about LSU. I am not surprised by anything we saw against Syracuse. After three games, I am thoroughly convinced LSU’s second half defensive trouble is due to the lack of depth on the defensive line. I had hoped LSU would start to develop that depth, but I am again not surprised LSU would hesitate on the road. Hopefully, next week that changes at home.
LSU cannot develop into the team they hope to be if they don’t develop outside of Fournette. They need to learn to use his greatness to make other aspects of offense easier. Playing at home is the perfect time for that.
HEY REF
I was asked to comment on the situation in the NFL where quarterback Cam Newton charged referee Ed Hochuli told him he was too young to get a personal foul call against the Saints in last week’s game. Just so happens I met and talked with Hochuli at an official’s camp at U. C. L. A. some years back. The man is a total professional and without hesitation Mr. Hochuli is way above such trivial bullsh*t. I was very fortunate to sit next to him on the bus taking us to the Bruins’ practice field one day and that next afternoon I sat at his table for lunch.
Mr. Hochuli is my “role model” and one of the greats that every official should emulate. The impression he made on me is one that I can get behind 1,000%. This man took the time to answer all of our questions while at the camp. On the ride to the practice field one day I asked him “what is the most important thing we could learn while at the camp”? He said “two things, very simple but the most important thing he’d hoped we’d go home with; (1) that no official should feel they are above another official and (2) it isn’t how well you know the rules; it’s how well you apply those rules to the game you’re working”. Each and every time I walk out onto a football field I’ve tried my best to remember his words of wisdom and apply them to my game that night. As far as Cam’s accusations all I’m gonna say is consider the source and I’ll end it there.
On Wednesday afternoon the NFL has closed the case because it’s pure, well enough. Maybe Cam’s father should’ve used some of the $180,000.00 that Auburn paid him and bought Cam some scruples and a personality. Cam wouldn’t know the truth if it bit him on the butt. That’s all I’ll say about the situation as there’s nothing there and onto things that really matter.
It happens every year and most teams aren’t immune. In my world it’s something I look forward to every year. What I’m talking about is a losing streak that comes early in the season that enables teams to build character. It’ll test the very heart and soul not only of players and coaches but of those people that call themselves fans. With character comes confidence. After you master character and confidence you mold champions. When you add character, confidence and champions you win CHAMPIONSHIPS!!
To those that are scratching their heads and trying to figure out just what’s going on with the Saints all I can say is this; the season is very early so sit tight and enjoy being the “under-dog”. I just don’t enjoy a season when we’re the top dog game after game. Being favored each week leads to over confidence and no room for improvement. If you are a true fan you’ll endure the bad times because it makes the good times just that much more enjoyable.
I don’t enjoy losing so don’t try to read anything into what I’m writing. Is there anyone you know that’s ever sat bewildered and seemed confused as to why a rollercoaster has many hills, loops, curves and fast turns? Certainly not! How enjoyable can a slow, flat ride be? The same can be said for any team sport and its fans.
Losing sucks, it humbles you, no doubt but it makes you work harder and it teaches you how to be a gracious winner. Nothing disgusts me more than a smart-(derriere) winner. They lack class. Wining without character and class is not wining. It’s like eating steak with a side order of French fries.
The Saints have had a season of humble pie already this year and it’s time for those getting the big bucks to show up on game day. If things don’t turn around and quickly then it’ll be hard to justify the millions of dollars being paid out each week, win or lose. Head Coach Sean Payton and his staff will no doubt are feeling the pressure to right the ship and get the Who-Dats back on the winning track. For many a season I’ve said the Saints need to draft a proven quarterback and get him some seasoning because Drew Brees isn’t Superman as many think. He is human and we all know sooner or later his body will breakdown if it hasn’t already. The NFL allows 53 men on each team’s active roster so it comes down to keeping backups that can contribute right from the first game all the way to the playoffs.
Please don’t say the problems begin with trading Jimmy Graham to Seattle. If ever there was an example of a plyer getting paid and not putting out it was Graham. He’s just another reason why I don’t believe in “GUARANTEED” money. Much of the Saint’s problems is in its defense. Once you get a double digit lead the guys on defense have to keep the lead while the offense adds to the lead. As long as you’ve got Rob Ryan leading the defense you’ll remain at the bottom or close to it.
In 2013 the Saints fired defensive guru Steve Spagnuolo and the NFL fired Gregg Williams because of the “Bounty-Gate” fiasco and just threw in Dennis Allen the former Raider’s head man and hope the mix works. Well, how’s it working so far? It’s bad and it better gel sooner rather than later or it’s going to be a very long season down in the Big Easy.
Till next week…
