FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Standout senior running back Kaleb Blanchard makes an appearance on The Dru Nettles Show this Thursday, September 6 (6pm—7pm on Cox 4, with a replay on Friday, 10:30am—11:30am on Cox 4). Blanchard, an Arkansas commitment, set the Denham Springs HS single season rushing record as a sophomore. He is considered one of the top running backs in the country and is an early commitment to sign to play football at the University of Arkansas.

The Jackets are next in action against Woodlawn High School. Coach Don Jones, head coach of the Panthers, will come on the show.

Jackets wide receivers coach/9th Grade coach Kade Keowen will also be on the program. In his first year at DSHS, Keowen was a standout baseball player at Central HS.

Our sponsors of the week are Joan Landry of State Farm Insurance and Scott Landry of Edward Jones. The Dru Nettles Show co-host Jon Fine is hoping that former Miss Louisiana Ali Landry makes an appearance as well. Coach Nettles was unavailable for comment on Landry, saying he first has to look at the film (of her).

Speaking about film, The Dru Nettles Show will start to air highlights of the previous week’s ballgame. This week, plays from the Jackets victory over Broadmoor will be shown on the program.

The Dru Nettles Show is co-hosted by DSHS athletic director/head football coach Dru Nettles and Jon Fine. For more information on the program, please visit JonFineProductions.com or “Like” TheDruNettlesShow on Facebook.

(NOTE: Woodlawn HS asst coach Jim Lieux fills in for Coach Long on tonight’s show)

SID GUESTS

Tonight’s The Sid Edwards Show (ON THE CENTRAL STORY) guests include players Gary Triplett, Cole Edgens and Sean Parker. Asst Coach Eugene Daniel joins in on the festivities.—Daniel was a standout Lee HS and LSU defensive back, and had a lengthy career in the NFL. Join Sid Edwards and Steve Johnson for all of the action live from Zoe’s Pizza Buffet on WPFC, 1550AM

JonFineProductions.com and Central Now App. Show-time: 5:30pm

Do note that Zoe’s now has a new sound system that makes listening to The Sid Edwards Show (and Central Speaks Radio Hour on Wednesday) even more patron-friendly. Check it out. I guess that makes Zoe’s owner Blake Andrews more than a one-trick pony.—He can cook great pizza, does a fine job on the radio and is electronically inclined. Who knew?!! lol Thanks Blake.

LESS KANDI

Kandi Jones (of KandiLand/THE CENTRAL STORY) is doing gangbusters on the Ideal Protein Diet via Moreau Physical Therapy and Spectrum Fitness in Central. We’ll have more on Kandi’s progress in next week’s newsletter. Or, check out her post on Facebook by Liking TheCentralStory.

OOPS

When we sent out the newsletter last week, we were told that the Denham Springs-Broadmoor game was going to be held on Saturday. An hour later or so, it was changed to Sunday. We did send out a subsequent note to let everyone know about the change

Yet, if some of you out there did not receive the updated game time and were inconvenienced by our inaccurate information, I apologize

Of course, if you “Like” TheDruNettlesShow on Facebook, you would have received the update a couple of times and much sooner.

CLASS ACT

Congratulations to the Denham Springs HS Athletic Hall of Fame. They put on a superior induction ceremony for the second Hall of Fame Class at Forrest Grove Plantation in Denham Springs. Terrific!

THE WIZARDRY OF OS

For years, I have been jealous of the people who predict hurricane season. They make a prediction before hurricane season, and then they make three more predictions during hurricane season based off of how things are developing.

Well, if they can do it, then so can I. People can choose to draw conclusions from the LSU game based off of the stats or what they saw with their eyes. Though the stats are impressive, I will make my first prediction of this year’s football team by what I saw against North Texas.

LSU is better at quarterback, but we won’t find out how much better LSU’s passing game is until the Tigers HAVE to throw to win. LSU’s passing offense was efficient, but keep this in mind. Tyler Wilson of Arkansas and Mettenberger completed same number of passes (19) this week while Wilson attempted just one more pass. Yet, Wilson threw for 367 yards while Mettenberger threw for less than 200 yards. The conclusion is that it is possible to be efficient and throw the ball downfield.

The good news is that quality receivers cannot be an excuse for a pedestrian passing game. They might not be Clayton, Davis, Bowe, Doucet, or Lafell but Landry, Beckham, Shepard, and company could be pretty good if given a chance.

LSU’s running backs are incredible. The offensive line is tremendous. This offense could look more like the LSU offenses we watched from 2005-2007 if the coaches decide to go for true balance. For those that don’t know what I mean, let me explain. If LSU throws 4 out of 10 plays and 3 of them are screens, I don’t consider that a balanced offense. Balance, to me, would have a mix of everything. Inside runs, outside runs, horizontal passes, and vertical passes. Right now, LSU is very inside run and horizontal passing dependent.

For those that want to argue LSU has only played one game against North Texas, so I am not being fair, remember two things. I am only going off of what I have seen with my eyes, and like the hurricane forecasters, I am perfectly willing to change my thoughts when I see new developments. For the record, I do expect to see great things from this offense as the year progresses.

Defensively, I think we can now see how the talk about Tyrann Mathieu not being good in man coverage and therefore he won’t be missed except for his big plays was silly. Considering how great the LSU secondary has been the last two years, there is clearly a drop off for the time being.

Overall, the defense looks stout and should end the year as one of the 10 best in the country. Still, one concern has to be Sam Montgomery. For an All-American and top 10 pick in the draft to be beaten out for his starting spot (Coach Miles said so, not me) is startling. Most everyone has been thinking LSU will be able to offset the losses in the secondary (Taylor, Claiborne, Matthieu) with the best pair of defensive ends in the country making plays in the backfield. I am glad Lavar Edwards is poised for a great senior year. Nevertheless, LSU’s defense will not be as good as it can be without Sam Montgomery playing like an All-American.

Like most LSU fans, I am looking forward to this year’s team improving from week to week. After one week, though, I am predicting a two loss regular season. But stick around and keep reading this article in the coming weeks. Because just like the hurricane forecasters, my prediction can, and most certainly will, change.
