THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High School

I have a two part trivia question. Part one, what do Mack Brown, Pete Carroll, Jimbo Fisher, Gene Chizik, and Les Miles have in common? This part should be easy. They all have one national championship. Sorry USC fans, no matter what the silly ESPN 30 for 30 make it up as you go documentary says, LSU won the BCS title in 2003. It was not a split title. But I digress.

Part two, what makes that group of five coaches who have won national championships different than any other group of coaches? This may be fairly obvious as well, but those are the only coaches not named Nick Saban or Urban Meyer to coach their teams to national championships since 2003. That means that Saban and Meyer have combined to win 8 of the last 13 national championships in college football. 8 of the last 13!!! Holy smokes!!

For me, it is even more impressive that those two have done it at different schools. That means in just 13 years each of them brought a school to a national championship, left that school and college football, and then brought another school to the top. Wow!

Enough blowing smoke for two guys that definitely don’t need me to blow smoke for them. The bigger question is whether I get my complete Christmas wish from Santa. Now that Saban has his… um… you know what he has accomplished so I don’t need to write it again. The point is, will he give the NFL one more shot before he retires? I don’t know, but let me make the argument for him to leave.

Nick, excuse me, Coach Saban. Congratulations. You have done an amazing job at Alabama. You have cemented yourself as possibly the best college football coach of all time, but doesn’t that sentence bother you just a bit? College football coach. You are a great football coach. Not just in college. You coached in the NFL with great success. Sure the couple of years with the Dolphins weren’t great, but they weren’t terrible.

In Miami, you went 9-7 your first year. Most years that is good enough to make the playoffs. The next year you were going to get the quarterback you needed, but the team doctors messed that up. So you were stuck with Daunte Culpepper who wasn’t healthy, Joey Harrington, and Cleo Lemon. Then you saw a better opportunity at Alabama, and you were right to leave.

But now, there is this asterisk on your coaching career. So what can you do about it? Probably nothing, except, you are only 64. Tom Coughlin is 69 and will probably coach again. You are a young 64 who we all know will coach till he is at least 70.

Just look at the Giants. Look. They have Eli Manning, Odell Beckham, Victor Cruz, and so much more. The defense needs a lot of work, but that is the side of the ball where you shine. Not to mention, the Giants organization is a pillar of stability, and solid football decisions.

College football is falling apart. Almost everyone is going to the hurry up spread. You have already shown you can defeat that, so move on to the NFL where teams don’t play that gimmicky nonsense that is barely football. Go show those NFL teams how to value the process, and do their best to win the day. Leave college football to the other coaches not quite in your league as you have proven time and again.

Besides, you owe it to us LSU fans.

HEY REF

I’ve never started writing my column as early as I’m doing this week. There is of course a simple explanation for this. As we get older there are times in our lives when we ask ourselves to remember where we were when certain things happened. Most of the time though it seems there’s some type of tragic event that causes us to always remember just exactly where we were when… …

That was all I could think of as I watched the latest wildcard playoff games this past weekend. You should remember where you were when the total lack of professionalism was put on display for all to witness. The two games I’m referencing were the Washington-Green Bay and the Pittsburg-Cincinnati games.

Put on display for the entire nation to witness was just how bad things have gotten and it’s also very sad as the NFL doesn’t seem to have an answer on how to reverse this trend. The first example I saw of pure unprofessional behavior was in the first quarter of the Redskin game. Washington’s tight end Jordan Reed #86 caught a pass deep in the Packer’s end of the field close to the 10 yard line.

I’ve asked others if they too caught this disgusting behavior yet no one has answered “yes”. It’s only after I describe what was done that a light seems to go off. If you remember our country has been under siege by those professing that we practice “Political Correctness”. Two of the most recent changes were when the NBA changed the Washington mascot from bullets to the Wizards. Then MLB forced Tampa Bay to drop “Devil” from all their uniforms, programs, memorabilia, etc. and go with just “Rays” to appease the Politically correctness agenda.

So, what did Reed do that should be banned? After he was downed he jumped up and at first I thought he was signaling a first down. But what he actually did was imitate pulling out a pistol from his pants and firing two shots into the crowd. He wasn’t finished as he then proceeded to “holster” his gun and not even the guys in the booth said a word. I did replay his actions a few times and I even used slow motion to see if maybe I was mistaken but again I was right.

I’ve got to be honest since it did happened very quickly but there was no doubt what his actions imitated. With the endless number of murders going on not only in D. C. but most big cities it just seemed this action should’ve warranted a penalty because in “Hey Ref’s” world this is 100% un-sportsman conduct. There’s no room for this in any league much less in one that is purported to be made up of professional players. So, I can only hope the owners get on top of this and stop it before any headlines are made because of it since we all are aware of those players arrested for murdering a friend and even one girlfriend.

Now the second and third act of total non-professionalism happened late between the Steelers and Bengals. I refuse to give these two idiots a single sentence or drop of ink so I’ll continue. And here’s where it just makes no sense to me because the two players guilty of the fouls were warned all week that they are going to be watched very, very close to insure they follow each and every rule in the book.

Is there anybody not aware that in every level of football for the past couple years, no matter if it’s pee-wee, high school, college or even in the NFL there’s been a tremendous amount of attention given to those players hitting a defenseless player and causing injuries and/or concussions? Of course not, it’s stressed in each team meeting and it’s also a big part of all defensive game plans NOT to go after another player in a way that could cause an injury.

But some players still feel they are above the rules and they’ll play their “style” no matter how many rules are written to stop them. And those of us who watched the Bengals early exit from this year’s playoffs should remember where we were when these two games were played. Because one of two things is going to happen; 1) Players in the NFL will continue to disregard rules they’re supposed to abide by or 2) The owners will clamp down hard on those that don’t play by the rule book and either suspend or ban those individuals for life.

Either way the NFL must lead in cleaning up the dirty play and owners will just have to be hard on themselves in not signing players that refuse to play within prescribed rules. All the negative play and the dirty players should and must be removed without delay and no matter the cost. If not then the game so many can’t live without will see more and more players unable to play because of cheap hits that cause massive injuries no player can recover from. And what will those that buy tickets do when all of their favorite stars are no longer playing the game? Well should I continue?

Till next week…
