Reason 4,562 that I am glad I am not a Texas A&M fan is the Regional and Super Regional had to be a gut wrenching experience for all Aggie fans. The Aggies played four extra inning games for a total of 16 extra innings. In those innings, their pitching surrendered just three total runs. A&M won two and lost two of those games including Monday night when their season ended on an error.
You are probably thinking, "I don't care about this. I am an LSU fan." I hear ya. I started this article with Texas A&M for two reasons. First, and you still might not care, but the Aggies blew an opportunity for the SEC that we may never see from any conference for a long time.
The SEC placed 5 teams in the Women's College World Series. Had A&M won, the SEC also would have placed 5 teams in the Men's College World Series. That feat would have been unprecedented in Omaha. As it stands, the SEC sent 9 out of a possible 16 teams to the World Series in baseball and softball. That is pretty strong.
If you are one of the fans that only cares about the Tigers and not the SEC, sorry you had to go through that. I'll get to my second reason for starting off this article the way I did. I don't care if TCU beats LSU 10-0, the Tigers caught a break facing the Horned Frogs instead of the Aggies in game one of the CWS.
Before I explain my reasoning, I want to make clear that TCU is a great baseball team with one of the three best pitching staffs in Omaha. TCU, Vandy, and Florida definitely lead the pack. That being said, I am glad to be facing someone other than Texas A&M. Especially when I look at what their pitching staff has done in the postseason, the potential of their offense, and the fact LSU has already faced them three times.
Given the choice though, I would definitely choose the other side of the bracket. LSU's side of the bracket will be very challenging because TCU and Vanderbilt have the pitching to win from the loser's bracket. For LSU to reach the championship series, I really believe the Tigers will need to get in and stay in the winner's bracket. LSU has won two post season championships in the last three weekends. They have done it by staying winner's bracket, while riding Lange and Poche even though the bats have struggled.
At this point in time, Florida and Vanderbilt are playing the best, most complete baseball of anyone in the country. The good news is that the teams playing the best heading to Omaha don't always play the best in Omaha. Baseball fortune and timing play such a large factor in winning and losing in baseball. If Lange and Poche stay on their roll and hard hits balls find gaps like they did at the end of the ULL game, then the Tigers have a great shot to win it all.
As far as winning it all, I was not surprised the Warriors lost game two, though I will be surprised if they don't win the series. Not because of the Kyrie Irving injury, but because of their ability to score a variety of ways, depth, and great shooting.
Game one was a much "prettier" game to watch then game two. That typically happens as the team's become more comfortable playing each other and make adjustments. The biggest adjustment I am waiting for is for the Warriors to guard Lebron James like the Spurs did in The Finals. James has been incredible the first two games as the Warriors have allowed him to get in the lane to score and distribute. Especially with Irving out, I would expect the Warriors to either back off James to encourage him to shoot more jumpers from 20 feet or double him more often.
Either way, I picked Golden State because of their offense which Alvin Gentry has received a great deal of credit for constructing. Since he is the Pelicans new coach, I look forward to seeing his adjustments after a rough offensive showing in game two.
HEY REF
By Dennis Dearie
Veteran Louisiana High School Referee
Would you like to become an Independent Contractor? I hear this phrase being used more and more each and every day. As many of you are well aware of “Hey Ref” does his best to cut through the BS and give you the stone cold facts. And you can be very sure of this fact because the branding of game officials in Louisiana as INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS is so far from the truth and misleading.
I think this week I’ll devote my entire space and attempt to explain how this very deceptive label is being used by the LHSAA. I hope that by explaining many fans will understand why many officials are dropping out and ending their careers. Many officials feel they are getting the “shaft” by being put in one group and then being classified as “independent”.
Let me reassure each and every one there’s nothing and/or way that would support working high schools games under the LHSAA banner and being INDEPENDENT what so ever. This term was introduced over twenty years ago to deprive workers any healthcare benefits and just about every other benefit that was paid workers in an industry. Simply put the LHSAA wants to have all game officials classified this way so no benefits have to be paid.
We must purchase a separate policy on our own to cover any medical problems associated with working any LHSAA games. The LHSAA acting like an employer dictates every aspect of how officials are paid; compensated and on top of that they even dictate the uniform we must wear to get on the field. Once again the LHSAA in its divine wisdom has mandated a change in the stripes on football official’s shirts.
Without any debate or input from the nine football official’s association state wide the change in shirts is mandated for the ’15 season. No big deal you might think but that small change will cost each official at best $100.00 since we use both long and short sleeved shirts. Two years ago it was a change to only one style of shoe from only one company.
I thought as an independent contractor I could wear a shoe that fit me comfortably but I was wrong to question the LHSAA. The ONLY shoe allowed came in only ONE width, narrow. By the ten minute mark in the very first quarter of every game the entire crew was feeling the pain and we raised this issue with the LHSAA and were told, “We won’t discuss this issue, you either adapt or you don’t work”. Does that sound like you’re independent?
If we’re truly independent contractors we should be allowed to have a say in the amount we will charge schools for our services. But again the LHSAA sets our game fees and travel fees. Being independent also means “FREE” to provide my services as agreed between myself and the school with which I provide my services. But again the LHSAA demands we join a union to work games on Friday nights.
Many of my fellow officials didn’t know they were being forced to join a union before you could independently work a football game for the LHSAA. As a so called “Right to Work” state this forced membership should be outlawed but the state looks the other way. Joining an association where you have dedicated meetings, a constitution, elected officers constitutes a union.
The Association becomes a hiring hall just like any other union. When I asked a member of the legislature about this practice I was told the LHSAA gets away with it by calling themselves “An Association”. To challenge this law would require many hours of debate before the legislature and millions of dollars.
SO when you hear “Independent” contractor being used by the LHSAA it’s nothing more than a play on words. They dictate your working conditions, rate of pay and it goes so far as demanding the official wear their prescribed uniform in order to get a job. There’s nothing independent about it, it’s just a way to control the workers (officials) without having to provide an ounce of security or benefits that ordinary workers receive in the market place!!!
Till next week…
