It is amazing how we lose sight of what is important and what we choose to be passionate about in sports. In America, we mock other countries for their over reaction to certain sports, including soccer.
Yet, what is going on in this country regarding the mascots? Do people realize we are debating mascots for a sports team? The only people that should be passionate about it at all would be someone who is offended by the name. Anyone else, why do you care? It is a mascot. Hello, it is not real.
Daniel Snyder, let it go. I thought Snyder was suppose to be a shrewd businessman. Just think for a second. If you change your mascot, then everyone has to buy NEW gear to keep up with the new name. The old stuff becomes vintage and worth more money (doesn't make Snyder money, but it would for others). Nevertheless, people will pay money to stay updated.
The music industry has made billions by convincing the world they need a new recording of something they already have because it is in a different format. The record wasn't good, so buy an audio tape, then a CD, then a mp3, and it is all of the same music.
Speaking of soccer, like I did in the beginning, this World Cup is 1,000 times better than the last one no matter what happens with the US for one reason. No vuvuzelas!!
Of course, I have to take this opportunity to point out ways to improve soccer. Some of the ideas are not new, but I had them four years ago and I am sure nobody remembers so I will share them again with slight improvements.
First, there should be more substitutions. I get the idea of conditioning being essential to the game, but the lack of substitutions does not test the depth of a team. Also, when we get to the next stage and don't settle for ties, the overtimes become brutal (and without action) with some players playing 120 minutes.
I think soccer could borrow an idea from volleyball and allow a libero. This player would be a special substitute that has advantages and disadvantages. Maybe that player could substitute for 3 different players, but only 10 minutes at a time and that player cannot play beyond those 30 minutes. Maybe there are other better ideas, but something to add a little strategy and energy to the game late in halves would be a big improvement.
My next idea is along the same lines and borrowed from the US game against Portugal. A one minute water break in each half or allow each coach one timeout per half. Again, give the players a quick breather, but at the same time let's do something to add just a little strategy to the game.
HEY REF
They say “Karma is a (female dog)” and now not only will the Miami Heat find out just how much of a (female dog) she is but the entire NBA will be treated to the banquet. In 2010 LeBron James bolted from the Cleveland Cavaliers in a much public way thanks to the two hour TV special that no doubt put a few millions in his pocket.
And so it will be another circus as the LeBron train is ready to leave the station in Miami. The Heat’s President Pat Riley said he “fully expected” James would opt out of the final two years of a six year deal he signed four years ago. Fox Sports has gone on the record and reported Wednesday that the Heat has been preparing for James to “try” free agency again.
James’ so called free agent status doesn’t mean he’s headed away from south Florida. Under the provisions of the NBA’s union contract James can sign with any team and that includes Miami. But one has to wonder if this is just a power play to have a say in a new coach, other trades and/or player signings? San Antonio’s dominance in the just completed finals made it abundantly clear the Heat’s bench is weaker than the American dollar.
I still have to wonder why James would leave now. I mean the Heat would have to pay him $42.7 million for the next two years so it can’t be the money. He’s been quoted saying the reason “is to win more championships”. I don’t buy that
I feel he wants control of the front office. He’s got money and titles so that can’t be his reasons, no not in my world simple said the only thing he doesn’t have is POWER!
Wish it could be that easy but this is the real world and nothing is that easy. Miami’s fans can only sit around and listen for word from their other two super stars; Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. They too may opt out and hit the free agency pool which some say isn’t likely since the core of another championship is there and only a draft choice or two will get them all back to the finals.
So we’ve got a big wait ‘n see game going on. But the bigger game going on is the one playing out in a Philadelphia court room. Seems the NFL has agreed to remove the $675 million “damage” cap it had agreed to with as many as 20,000 retired players that are suing the league for those so-called unknown injuries from concussions.
Here’s the big change; the newly revised settlement eliminates the provision that barred those players getting relief (CASH) from the NFL from suing the NCAA and/or amateur aka High Schools, Pee-Wee or other football leagues. Talk about opening the doors to an unlimited amount of cash.
I can see lawyers filing suits against every college, high school and BREC style leagues. Why the hell not? This is the land of milk and honey so let’s grab every penny from as many people as possible for injuries we knew would happen. Yes, I said it; everybody knew these kinds of injuries would happen.
It’s ludicrous for me to believe that educated men would say anywhere that they didn’t know slamming their heads together or to the ground would cause brain injuries. The rule making helmets mandatory has to make you ask “WHY”? I knew from that first collision in 7th grade that man that crap hurts.
And if it hurt when I was only 14 then by the time I was 6’4” tall and 300 lbs. it sure would hurt a whole heck of a lot more. And then my common sense takes hold and says “you know if I keep this up, sure as hell I’ve got to be damaging my brain”!
Just because you don’t have another person or an employer telling you that continued slamming your head on the ground or into another 300 lb. man at full speed will be detrimental to my health is no reason for me to be able to sue them for negligence. Oh, I forgot, we live in an America where we don’t take responsibility for our own actions. Yes, I’m wrong; it’s always someone else’s fault, never my own.
And I’m so glad there are lawyers out there making claims on our behalf and not on our own decisions.
Till next week… …
