KANDI GIRL

YOU ARE CENTRAL’S WORLD

Kandi Jones body is getting in position to matching her mouth… in great shape! She has been on Ideal Protein via Moreau Physical Therapy/Spectrum Fitness in Central. In her own inimitable style, her are Kandi’s most recent reflections:

It is just another week and another inch down! Whooohooo!!! I started my ideal protein journey several weeks ago and 8 pounds 13 1/2 in gone. I would like to give a massive shout out to my coach Christy Roe. She has been so encouraging and helpful to help me press on to my goal weight and seeing my inches drop. I can't lie....me and Mr. Ideal have had some bumps in the road. What relationship doesn't? Sure he doesn't hold the door open for me but he has been very kind and complimentary with my jeans! That has to count for something. Ideal has taken the guess work out of dieting. No doubt when you are cheating! Having my meals clearly laid out helps me to deal with my desire to eat instead of what. We all struggle with food, weight loss, mental eating… all the things that stress us and pack on the blubber. I have seen the results, feel them, have had others notice and don't feel like I am stretching to see an improvement. I started this journeys to lose that last 15… The ones that won't go away. Halfway there… I am feeling like I am finally pressing towards where I want to be. I know… I am not trying to lose 50 lbs so what's the point? The point is that we all have things we would like to see change and improve. Ideal has opened the door to seeing that happen!!! If you are not where you want to be… join me on ideal. He is one sassy diet and if I can do it.....anyone can. Stay tuned for more of my journey. =

AFTER HOURS

Late-Night Musings From A Former LSU Beat Writer

By Carl Dubois, Sports Editor, (McMinnville, Oregon) News-Register

THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY, Ore. — I’ve waited to comment on the removal of the statue of Joe Paterno at Penn State. I’ve waited because the more I think about it, the more I think it should be all about waiting. The more I think about it, the more I think we should wait much longer before erecting statues of people. Maybe we should wait 100 years. If by then they’re still famous, still celebrated, still largely worthy of a large, bronze likeness being placed in some public place, then go for it. If they’ve been gone a few years, let’s be patient. Let’s wait. If they’re still here? Gosh, no.

We live in, if you’ll pardon the pun, statuesque times. Maybe I wasn’t paying much attention before, but these statues seem to be popping up like meerkats lately. Nick Saban. Steve Spurrier. Tim Tebow. Danny Wuerffel. Shaq. Sort of like the caution about getting a tattoo, maybe we ought to have a waiting period. Nothing is really permanent anymore, as you can make a tattoo or a statue go away, but it takes a lot of effort. Maybe we should think these things through a bit more.

You can find plenty of people who will warn you about graven images, idolatry and the like. My reluctance is not so much biblical as it is in wanting some restraint, some perspective, some context. Let time do its work. How much time is the question. Paterno was around for a long time. A long time. You’d think it was long enough to get to know everything you’d want to know about a man before you put up a statue of him. Well, we learned otherwise. Paterno did many good things. But what is that saying, that evil can flourish when good men do nothing? Somewhere between the boundaries dividing the sins of omission from the sins of commission, there’s a murky mess of evil left to sort through. Does it undo all of the good any of those men did? No, but down comes the statue, a symbolic toppling of we thought to be true, and a real toppling of the symbol of a man to whom so many practiced blind loyalty.

No, the proliferation of sports statues hasn’t done much for me, and that was true before we started hearing about Jerry Sandusky and the culture of secrecy and denial at Penn State. Maybe it’s because with so many years in the business of covering sports and those who play and coach, much of the iconography has lost some of its magic. The images, for me, seem to be in the mind’s eye, where moments are repeated in slow-motion and in the plausibly live sensibility of the wayback machine of our memories. They are not the heavy-metal, stand-in-one-place works we call statues. Can’t seem to get excited about those. And I find myself wondering if we rush to put them up.

Perspective, patience and context these days feel like lost arts. At times I think we can go from thought to tweet to carved-in-stone in about 20 seconds. Here’s something worth carving in stone: restraint. Great word. It’s a word I’m beginning to appreciate more and more. I might even turn it into a tattoo. But, before I do, I’ll give myself an appropriate waiting period, so I can think about it.

See you next week.

THE WIZARDRY OF OS

The Saints are comin,

the Saints are comin,

Idontknowthewordstothisparttheysingreallysuperfast.

the Saints are comin,

the Saints are comin!

The opening above was obviously inspired by the U2 and Green Day song, “The Saints are Coming.” I think the meaning of the song is once again appropriate as it was for its first performance when the Dome was reopened after Katrina. I could care less that Sunday’s game is a preseason game. After all that has gone on since Jimmy Graham’s touchdown put the Saints a minute and a half away from the Super Bowl, I just want to see the Saints back in action.

If you are a big Saints fan, like me, I highly suggest you follow my viewing guidelines for this game and the entire season.

1. Do NOT watch any pregame shows as they will only focus on the off season news.

2. ONLY listen to Jim and Hokie on 870AM. I can promise you they will focus on the action on the field (of course many people already follow this rule).

3. If you cannot follow rules 1 and 2, then invent some sort of game (not a drinking game because I don’t advocate that) where you do something that releases frustration every time Sean Payton’s suspension, Bounty Gate, or Jonathan Vilma is mentioned.

As for the game itself, I am good with not seeing the starters much. We know exactly what 20 out of the 22 will do when the season starts. Brees, Colston, Sproles, etc. will be awesome. The safeties will not be very good. The linebackers will be much improved.

The success of the season will depend on a few first time starters, but mostly on players developing to give depth to the roster. Consequently, I will be watching the following positions closely:

• Wide receiver: Colston and Moore will get hurt for a few games at some point. Arrington, Morgan, and Toon will have to be ready at some point.

• Defensive end: In the NFL, you have to get to the quarterback, bounty or not. If guys like Wilson and Galette are able to win one on one matchups, the defense will be more effective. If Cameron Jordan can play like a first round pick, that would be huge too.

• Cornerbacks: Greer and Robinson wouldn’t have played much anyway, so I am not concerned about their injuries. Even when those two are healthy, I am going to be concerned about are the new corners. Most NFL offenses look to attack nickel and dime defensive backs, linebackers, and safeties. Consequently, Johnny Patrick and whoever else makes the team at corner are going to play a major part in the success of the season.

For the record, the lyric I didn’t know is, “I say no matter how I try, I realize there's no reply.” I don’t know how that applies to my point, but I do know… the Saints are comin, the Saints are comin!!
