THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball and Head Swimming Coach at Central High School

The SEC has its first full slate of games this weekend. So far, it looks like this year will be a lot different than the past few years in how the games will be decided.

Most notably, the offenses appear to be ahead of the defenses thanks to a slew of veteran quarterbacks, a stable of impressive running backs, and inexperience on defense.

The top three quarterbacks of Murray, McCarron, and Manziel were clearly the best heading into the year. Mettenberger is looking like a top tier quarterback. As expected veterans Franklin, Wallace, and Shaw are leading their offenses to racking up yards and points. The only disappointment at this time would be Driskell and the offense at Florida.

At running back, Georgia's duo are as good as the league has seen. LSU is deep and suddenly versatile with the use of Magee and Brazil. I am very impressed with South Carolina's Mike Davis. There are well known talented running backs at Alabama, Florida, and Arkansas to go along with other lesser know quality backs at Ole Miss, Vandy, A&M, and… well… everywhere else.

Will the defenses catch up this year? Time will tell, but the early defensive struggles are not from a lack of talent at certain places. Georgia and LSU are great examples of defenses that are fast and talented but getting burned at times (the Bulldogs have played better offenses). Both teams are breaking in new players that are showing their inexperience through bad angles and poor edge containment especially in the secondary.

At LSU, there has been scrutiny regarding long pass plays surrendered. Personally, I am more concerned about the run support from the secondary. Surprisingly, there are rumors that the LSU coaches are willing to make wholesale changes in the linebackers and secondary. Whether changes are made or not, the competition should push everyone to get better.

I am not sure what the excuse is at Texas A&M for poor defense. I do not know enough about their roster, but their performances against Rice and Sam Houston should have Kyle stadium shaking with fear as Alabama heads to town.

As for college football beyond the SEC, I have a few more questions like I had last week that may not have an answer.

Why does Texas play games on the road against non conference teams in the Northwest? Wyoming a few years ago and BYU this year. Who was the last player Texas recruited from either state? Shouldn't Texas be playing those teams at home? Mack Brown fired his defensive coordinator, but the schedule maker needs to explain that logic to me.

Has Mike Leach ever had a team not score an offensive touchdown in a game and still win… before they beat USC?

I don't know if anyone has picked up on this trend, but I do not want the Saints to be the team needing a score at the end when they play the Falcons. Look at the last few years. Last year, the Saints stopped the Falcons in the same end zone as this year to hang on and win. Two years ago, the Saints stopped Michael Turner on fourth down. The year before that the Saints lost when Hartley missed a short field goal. Finally, in the Super Bowl season, the Saints clinched victory with a Vilma interception. The fact is that in at least one of the two games between the Saints and the Falcons the team with the ball at the end does not make the play. In a rivalry with so many close games, I find it interesting that the team trailing at the end keeps failing to find a way to score.

As for the game, I find it encouraging that the Saints have many ways to improve and still won. The front seven is tremendously improved despite the injuries. My biggest complaint is actually on offense. The Saints have placed an emphasis on outside zone running plays and none of the Saints top 3 running back look comfortable with that type of run. Cadet or Robinson might be the best to execute that play, but they don't play. So unless Payton is willing to use those two guys, I am ready for Payton to downgrade the outside zone.

To match my last college questions, I would like to end with a pro thought. The media is going to make 187 conclusions regarding Chip Kelly, his system in the NFL, and how it will affect opposing defenses. Yet, what I will be watching is how the Eagles themselves will hold up to the grind of the season running that many plays. NFL rosters are tiny compared to colleges. At Oregon there are blowouts where starters come out early, and games against weak opponents. In the NFL, where every week is a grind, I wonder if the Eagles won't wear down as quickly as their opponents.

HEY REF

If we can believe reports by the Monroe News Star then former NFL MVP and local hero Doug Williams has been given his walking papers. Grambling seems to have exhausted all patience in turning around their football program. And it seems that Doug is finished before his second time around can get on an even keel.

Doug’s first stint at the place where he played for THE legend, Eddie Robinson, from 1998-2003 was very successful as his Tigers went 53-17. Williams left Grambling to take a job in the front offices of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers then left to spend just one single year as the GM of the UFL’s Virginia Destroyers.

Williams did lead Grambling to the SWAC title in his rookie season as the head honcho but has had no such luck since that inaugural season. In 2012 Grambling went a very disappointing 1-10 (0-9 in SWAC) and with two opening losses the university approved his hastened termination. The News Star is reporting that Grambling’s President Frank Pogue called Williams to a meeting on Wednesday and gave him his pink slip.

Many alumni are pointing the finger at the relationship Doug has with his son and starting quarterback, D. J. Williams as one of the main reason for his firing. D. J. started 8 games last year and both games this year. Their offense was absent in many games and the elder Williams didn’t or wouldn’t find a suitable replacement for the ailing offense and many said it was past time to get the program headed in another direction.

The opening at Grambling came so fast that no candidates have been named as a replacement for the departing Williams. And as yet no word either has been released by the university as to whether the younger Williams will remain at the school or on the team. Stay tuned to see if and when the interviews will begin.

In the BIGGEST NON-CALL of this young NFL season fans of the New Orleans saints have to be in love with the referee (white hat) from this past weekend’s game against the Atlanta Falcons. The “win” goes into the Saint’s column but replays show that on the final play Falcons’ quarterback Matt Ryan was tackled illegally by the back of his shoulder pads.

In the proper term it’s called the “Horse Collar” and it has been illegal to pull anyone down to the ground by grasping it and yanking backwards or sideways for several years now. It’s a personal foul that is also not allowed in NCAA or high school football. I must be missing something here because I’ve not heard on any sports show or network anything about this blown call.

I do know this; if Drew Brees was done that in the Georgia Dome every Cajun would’ve declared war against the officials for not protecting their beloved QB! So, this game we so dearly love is about inches and getting a call (or not) in securing victory. For my guys in stripes all I can do is call ‘em like I see ‘em and guys “YOU BLEW IT BIG TIME”!!

So the next time we scream the refs cost us a game just remember game one in the Louisiana Super Dome and remember we were given that one. So pay back might be a b_tich and all I can hope for is everything evens out at the end.

Till next week…
