THE WIZARDRY OF OS

Assistant Basketball Coach and Head Swimming Coach at Central High

I used to think the warnings of impending doom were simply a part of the routine leading up to the Olympics. The routine begins with the stories of the host city drastically over budget and no possibility of the facilities being ready in time for competition. Then the Opening Ceremony is an amazing show, and everyone begins to forget about the problems.

After two weeks, the Olympics end, the host city is stuck with bills to pay, and facilities that no longer have a purpose so they sit empty until they crumble. Nobody notices because the world has turned back to their lives. But every 10 years or so, somebody decides to write an article showing how the Olympics served more harm than good for that city.

Could this finally be the Olympics that breaks the routine? Unfortunately, that is the story that has my interest going into this year’s Olympics. Normally, I am optimistic and choose to turn away from “train wrecks.” This year is an exception because I am tired of the routine. I am ready for some real change, and that may only occur if the next two weeks is filled with ugly stories of the conditions in Rio.

If Rio completely bombs this year’s Olympics, could the IOC be forced to use their influence and power for good? The IOC should have begun to receive a wakeup call when they had more cities pull out of the 2024 bidding process than realistic cities taking part in the process. The bidding process is where the Olympics have started to crumble.

The IOC should completely rethink their picture of the ideal host city. Their philosophy should be to work with the host city before AND after the Olympics. The IOC has made their own trouble because potential host cities have been willing to mortgage their future just to host. Yet, the tide appears to be turning. A year ago, Boston withdrew from the bidding process for 2024. Mayor Marty Walsh said, “I refuse to mortgage the future of the city away. I refuse to put Boston on the hook for overruns.”

The pool of cities that are capable of hosting the Olympics is fairly small already. When those cities see the reality of hosting as a negative instead of seeing the potential investment as a positive, the IOC has done something wrong. After all, this is the Olympics we are talking about! It should not be hard to promote. For crying out loud, athletes are preparing to compete in feces infested water in the name of the Olympics and national pride.

Great venues do not have to be brand new, so that should not be a requirement for the host city. This summer, I went to Denver for a conference. We had the opportunity to go see a Rockies game. Coors Field is a great example of how sports can help resurrect parts of cities.

One would hope that the IOC would be better at helping cities manage the process. The IOC has run the Olympics for years, while most host cities have one shot to do it right. Yet, the narrative is the same every four years as I referenced in the beginning of this article.

I guess the IOC has been satisfied with the results because they continue to make money. My question is whether the IOC will see the downward trend and make the appropriate changes before it is too late?

HEY REF

Well it looks like NFL Commissioner has finally “won” one. Last week the New England Patriots and their MVP quarterback announced their decision to stop any further appeals of Tom Brady’s four game suspension for using balls not properly inflated to the proper pressure. I’ve been asked more times than I want to admit concerning my two cents that I threw into the discussion. I felt and still feel that Brady, if he was to be fined and/or suspended, the only right thing to do would be to suspend and fine the entire roster of players.

I will just this one last time give my reason for thinking this way by simply saying there is no “I” in team. Since the entire team supposedly gained an advantage by using deflated balls in the win all of the players should bear the penalty Mr. Goodell handed down. It just baffles me as I just don’t understand how the Commissioner can penalize just one player. It makes no sense but after so many cases went the wrong way for Goodell maybe I’ll end the debate by saying “even blind squirrels find a nut once in a while”.

If you’re a number cruncher I’ve got a few I’d like to present you. Even if you’re not the numbers being taken in by TV networks and the monies being paid out are just simply insane when the subject is the NFL. Direct TV is paying the NFL $12 BILLION for their Sunday Ticket for the next eight years. The total that the “other” National TV networks will pay to the NFL is $6 BILLION PER YEAR, an increase of 21%! If you’ve paid attention to the dollars being paid to players this doesn’t come as a surprise.

So, let’s take a look at some of these contracts, Andre Luck; 6 years, $140 million ($23.4M per year) with $87 million guaranteed. Joe Flacco; 3 years, $66.4 million ($22.14M per year) with $44 million guaranteed. Aaron Rodgers; 5 years, $110 million ($22M per year) with $54 million guaranteed, Russell Wilson; 4 years, $87.6 million ($21.9M per year) $61.5 million guaranteed. Drew Brees; 5 years, $100 million ($40M per year) with $40 million guaranteed.

The list is filled with more of these obscene numbers. You may remember just about five years ago the players went on strike for more money. Money these same owners said they didn’t have. Now these owners aren’t even blinking an eye as they’re filling up wheel barrels of cash for their top notched players. The owners are now demanding BILLION DOLLAR STADIUMS for the “honor” of securing a team. And if a city doesn’t pony up fast enough they’ll move their team faster than you can whistle Dixie.

A friend knows I’m not a fan of the NFL and asked me why I am so upset at these player salaries. It’s not hard for anyone to understand, I told him. The money being paid out is nothing more than a roll of the dice by the NETWORK KINGS. They’re betting more and more people will pay more and more dollar bills on the products they’ll be hawking during those commercials most people use for a bathroom break. No longer will just ticket costs and concessions pay the tab. Every consumer will see higher prices at the stores they shop.

Its economics 101 and everybody will be affected, every wallet, every credit card and every checkbook will have to open wider to cover the price these network contracts. I know too many people that can’t afford to pay the steep prices being demanded of them so they just pull the ‘ole credit card out year after year. As many of my readers know I’ve been priced out of sitting in an NFL stadium to watch a game live.

I refuse to pay the prices it cost to “take me out to the ball game” and I guarantee if every fan was made to pay cash for their tickets 90% of every stadium would be empty. I wanting to go see a Saints game last year and went on-line to buy tickets. Good seats were anywhere from $1,000.00 each and up. The cheap seats going for a couple hundred and I knew then I’d be sitting home.

So, at the end of the day the owners are gambling the TV networks can make the payments for the next five, six and seven years. If not the only option left to them will be to file for bankruptcy and pray whoever is president will be a fan and bail ‘em out at our expense.

Till next week…
